What are you watching

I watched the final of portrait artist of the year tonight.
3 artists painting a portrait of Brian Cox.
The one he picked was brilliant but when the judges picked the winner, imo the worse one won.
I don't think the judges know what they are on about.

Watched the film Train Dreams ( Netfix ) the other day. Stunning portrait of a man stoic a tree fella trying to get some kind of life, in a very harsh environment

An absolute scheming c...t. How he got away with it for so long.

How he's got away with 50 months rather than life can only be simply down to money. The juror interviews were shocking. Don't think its over though so with any luck there is more time on its way.

Totally stumbles across a film I've wanted to rewatch for years:

The Count of Monte Cristo, the Jim Caviezel version

It's on Chanel 32 just now but halfway through.

I have the DVD somewhere but it's in a box in the garage.

Apart from the fact that it's a damned good version of the story, I like it because I know it was filmed in Bray and some of the beach scenes were done at the Silver Strand, a pay-to-enter beach south of Wicklow Town that I used to frequent when I holidayed there as a teenager with the boys' club.

So many fond memories.

(And I've never forgotten Brenda.)

Currently watching The Bishops Wife ( which you introduced me to) as I couldn’t find anything Christmas’y. I did have it recorded but had to clear my recordings to make way for the racing but thankfully it’s on utube.

Nothing Christmassy? But the number 1 Christmas film Die Hard (the original) is on! Yippee Kay Yay MF and all that (or was that the second one?)

There is actually a pointer called Yippee Kay Yay and he's quite good. I have failed sadly to get the course commentator to add the MF on to the end of his name during a race which is a true shame....👿

If anyone has Netflix can I recommend a film called The Mustang. It was shown on Ch 4 a while back but is no longer available on there, but it is on Netflix. I’d love to watch it again.

Maureen did you watch the BBC2 documentary by Gordon Buchanan tonight on the Wild Horses of the Rockies? Well worth a watch if you didn't catch it.

I started watching it very late but fell asleep so going to watch it today. I hadn’t actually realised that the Rocky Mountains were in Canada, or that there were wild horses living there. I hope they don’t treat them the way the Americans do, something that makes me very angry given that years ago there was legislation to protect them and they now round them up by helicopter. When rescued from the kill pens the rescue agencies try to reunite herd members with each other.Re the film, I think the organisation that gets prisoners working with the mustangs has closed down which also saddens me as there are comments from ex prisoners on utube that say the programme turned their life around. I think Matthias is one of the best actors around these days. I watched Rust and Bone many years ago and didn’t think much of it and only realised yesterday that he stars in it so I’m going to watch it again. My favourite book from childhood was Ghost Horse by Joseph E Chipperfield so I’ve been a bit obsessed with wild mustangs ever since; at the time it was written they were planning to protect the remaining wild herds. So much for that….

I watch almost no tv apart from sport, and I'm not interested in any of the film subscription services either. My current favourite YouTube channel is Steve1989MREinfo which deals mainly with military rations over the years. Here's a festive French box from 2023 which looks really good. An earlier French pack included a tin of ostrich meat in cranberry sauce, but that's no longer in any of their current rations.

Stumbled across a film on Prime (I think it was Prime), that really captivated me: Once More, starring Morgan Freeman.

A very pleasant way to pass a couple of hours.

I'll be watching it again soon.

I did watch it again a couple of times after that but couldn't find it the last time I looked for it.

I found it on Prime again under its American title 'The Magic of Belle Isle'.

Maybe I'm a wee bit emotional because I made quite a few quid today and have been indulging but I watched it again this evening and found myself reaching for the Aldi version of Kleenex.

It's a beautiful film.

I'll sleep well tonight.

Anyone watching ‘The Racing Game’ on Talking Pictures TV?

Set in 1979, with a few lesser-known faces, although Ian Cuthbertson and Susan Penhaligon were in the last episode.

Champion jockey loses his hand after an on course accident; acquires false hand made of cement; hangs up his saddle; recruited by BHA to investigate dodgy dealings within the industry.

Very dated, but hilarious at times. The dialogue/ banter between the two main investigator characters is definitely of its time, and usually based around “crumpet”.

What marks these two out, though, is that they act like Bodie and Doyle! And never underestimate the ex-jockey with the false hand. If he catches you with a backhand swipe, you’ll soon know about it! Countless villains laid out sparko, blood pouring from a face wound. That hand made of cement is lethal.

So shite, it’s addictive.

Binge watched Red Eye Season 2 the other night into the early hours. Better than the first series and I had to keep watching as there was a cliffhanger at the end of every episode. Enjoyed it though.

9pm this evening on Sky Arts (channel 36 in this part of the world) - Sabrina, starring Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart and William Holden.

It was remade in 1995 with [the then drop-dead-gorgeous] Julia Ormond, Harrison Ford and Greg Kinnear in the respective roles.

If you've never seen either I strongly recommend watching/recording. I have the remake on DVD and give it an airing every now and again but I've only seen the original once and loved it too even if Bogart is an even less believable suitor than Ford for the much younger eponymous woman.
