You can't go wrong with New Zealand Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, Jon and you can get a bottle for just over a fiver.

True enough but they are dry if fruity .

Off dry is always a difficult category

Try an Australian riesling like Leasingham Magnus Riesling 2005 Clare Valley
£7.99 (£5.33) if you buy 3 Wine Rack and the posher branches of Thresher

or the grimly named Tesco Finest Tingleup Riesing 2006 Great Southern
£7.99 Tesco

A bit different is the intriguing Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Grüner Veltliner 2005
£6.99 Sainsbury from Austria. These are recommended by Jancis robinson but I have had the riesling from Thresher and it was excellent .

It might well be worth trying an Alsatian wine Jon - the Pinot Gris from there is often much tastier than a Pinot Grigio , Gewurztraminer can be a bit overpowering for some tastes but has a spicy, rosepetal bouquet . The Muscat is very fruity and the Pinot Blanc light and refreshing.

The Turckheim co-op wines which are widely available are reliable , as are Hugel . Trimbach and Zind Humbrecht excellent if rather pricey - well worth trying are the Albert Mann Alsace wines available in Oddbins for about £7-8

I hope so, hate warmer weather

I don't drink wine or I would contribute properly but those who know me know I just can't help talking lots and have to contribte to everything!!!!

Good point Colin

I was told about the forum by Paul as a good place to talk about different sports, i like contributing to the chit-chat and sports forums and if it was made horse racing only I would have to leave

What, and get charged premium rates? :D

Thanks for the wine suggestions, oenophiles - I'd forgotten about Gewurtzes, I used to drink those in the days I subscribed to Pieroth's catalogue, which is some years back. The Pinot Gris sounds good, too. Cheers!

I have been told by my German friends that LIDLE do a CHAMPERS?? on a par for tastes with some of the top ones and the price is only £3-99 a btl its called ......

CREMANT d' ALSACE BRUT..

I am on my way to get a few btls later..... I'll become a wino :o before this year is out, as I very rarely drink I have the occasional can or bottle nowdays.......

I'm not a Champagne fan. OK, sometimes it can add a sense of occasion to the occasion, but for the price of some cringingly ultra dry fizzy stuff you can get a really nice bottle (or two) of non fizzy stuff.

CREMANT d' ALSACE BRUT..
Sorry its £4-99 I got chatting (or she chatted me up) to this very smart looking lady? ;) (About food and drink she said the King Prawns are a very good buy I then mentioned the! CREMANT d' ALSACE BRUT..)
!!! and she bought two btls as well and the manageress is going to try some too, so I bought my quota as well and the K-P which are frozen of course .. so lets just hope its as good as its recommended

A good bargain in Waitrose today - Cosme de Palacio Rioja down to about £4.99 from 7.50 and the excellent Duval leroy premier Cru Champers from £21 to 13.99

Another serious bargain in the Observer today Marques de Monistrol's vintage cava 2001 - i.e not their basic stuff is down to £3.99 at co-op until 31 Dec.

I'm currently drinking a bottle of Snappygum Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz reserve. It's on offer at Asda down from £7 to £3.50 and is certainly worth every penny of that.
