The Mullins Machine

Three great examples of horses bought from other stables that show the genius of Mullins.
True Self beaten in a Warwick bumper before being sold at public auction for £18K -ended up winning silly money at Riyadh on their biggest night of the year.
Thousand Stars couldn't win a race until Willie got a hold of him.He was a regular at the top table for years winning an incredible amount of prize money.
I Am Maximus -refugee from the Henderson Yard who won an Irish National,Drummore and Aintree National.
Has anyone ever improved a horse previously trained by WPM.
Historically that would have deprived us of the famous five.
But that only happened once. Can’t help but feel it’s going to happen on a regular basis with the Mullins horses now. I wasn’t aware of True Selfs success. That really is a brilliant piece of race planning. Looking at Thousand Stars ( who I always assumed was trained by Ted Walsh) he was pretty good before switching to Mullins but had had a disappointing season just before he moved stable. Again, brilliant race planning. Henderson doesn’t seem all that interested in staying types so it probably made sense to switch him to a stable that excelled in those sort of races. Can’t help but feel it’s never bothered him that he’s never won a National.

Thousand Stars was 1from 12 before joining Mullins and had a peak rating of 112.Mullins won a County Hurdle and French Champion Hurdle with him-he absolutely transformed the horse.

Re Thousand Stars; jockey Tom Doyle recommended him to Jim Culloty when trainer Lar Byrne ( not Hardy/Lecky Lar) was selling him as a 5 year old.
For 10k he was an ideal syndicate horse that could run every week and always finish in the frame, according to Tom.
Jim declined; apparently he too cheap .... the rest is history.
As a 2 year in France he finished third to Binocular once, with Ashkazar sixth.
Any wonder these French horses became popular ?

Owners are flocking to Mullins and understandably so. For example: Pipe (David) has Caroline Tisdall now putting horses with him. It reminds me of years and years ago on a visit to Pipe's (Martin) yard for my dad's birthday. We were shown all the horses by Tom Malone before Martin came and took over. Tom Malone told us that Pipe was offered Kauto Star but his owners wouldn't (or couldn't?) buy him. He went to Nicholls and the rest is history. The same is now happening to Nicholls.

I see WPM has 7 horses entered for the valuable Sussex Champion Hurdle at Plumpton on Easter Sunday including Kargese and Absurde. Dan Skelton has 4

Getting a son of Blue Point who isn't great at his hurdles to win races at Gowran and Fairyhouse on soft/heavy ground is a fair achievement.

Willie is 3/1 (Hills) to win the UK trainers' title next season. I think that is a gift.

Unfortunately they restricted me to a tiny fraction of what I wanted to put on so I might have to pop into town during the week and do a wee trawl of their branches to get on.

A bit of me thinks I should maybe hold off because willie might not start trying until approaching Cheltenham and by then he could be some way longer.

I'm just wondering if anyone kept track of this for the season just ended?

I wouldn't say it's a gift. He won by 200k after saddling a 1-2-3 in the National which won him 800k a feat even with his domination of the sport he'd be hard pressed ever to manage again. Also Cheltenham couldn't have gone much better with Elliot having a poor one.

It's a fair price and he's an incredible man but if you were approaching next years National thinking Mullins only needs to land the 1-2-3 to get back in it then it's hardly outstanding value.

On the other hand, he won without having the winner of the Gold Cup, Champion Chase or Champion Hurdle and he has been buying up lots of the exciting young talent, such as the 11 contenders he was able to line up in the Triumph hurdle. So, I think, for now at least, he’s getting even stronger. I’d say 3/1 is more than fair, though wouldn’t bet on it myself as I don’t like to wait a year for my payout.

This time last year he was 7/2 with WH to win a second title, which I thought at the time was a gift, one that I accepted. But he didn’t run as many horses in Britain during the winter as I was expecting and, while he had an excellent Cheltenham number wise, he didn’t monopolise the feature races, and the price went out to 9/1 in the weeks immediately after Cheltenham. It took an incredible Aintree to turn it around.

To be honest I thought he’d be lower than 3/1 for a third title, but before taking it I’d like to know he intends going for it from the start of the season rather that waiting till the Spring to see what might be on.
