Amateur Jockey Races Thread

Is that the same trainer as when the jockey was banned for not trying.(hillsin)
Chris Honour was Hillsin's trainer for the race at Worcester which prompted the BHA hearing a few weeks ago. Alan Jones is the current trainer - he's won races with Hillsin previously - but owner Mr Clegg moves his horses around at a rate unrivalled only by Kia Joorabchian.

Morning all,

There’s an amateur race today at Ludlow at 16:37. Only four horses, sadly, but Eleanor Williams is the only jockey with recent form in the book (1-3, over the past 14 days).

Two points win on at 4/1, Pooroldmackley.

You've got multiple leading lady rider Gina Andrews on the favourite so theoretically maximum assistance - albeit giving a lot of weight to the Williams horse.

In the Exeter race, the assistance of Ed Vaughan for me was the deciding factor in the finish over the inexperienced Richard Upton.

Good luck, Len, but, while obviously Pooroldmackley could win today, on a general point of principle going forwards I think your system is going to come unstuck over Jumps if it's rating a rider like Eleanor Williams ahead of a rider like Gina Andrews based on this notion of "recent form."

There's no reason why Andrews should have any recent form - she's just not had a lot of rides lately - but that doesn't diminish her ability in the saddle.

And pretty soon, you're also going to have situations where your system can't have a jockey in a rules race based on recent rules form when they've ridden a treble in a Point the previous weekend.

Thanks for this, Ian.

I think it’s a classic example of shortcuts having their limitations and eventually coming undone.

I suppose it’s in my nature to go looking for a few shortcuts. But, tbh, I don’t think I have the level of curiosity in me to seek out the extra layers of detail that ekes out the “hidden info”; at least not about horse racing.

But thanks for the advice - always very helpful.

Patrick riding for Henry Daly caught my eye Len.
Hi Outsider - yes, and HC Swan on the favourite. That’s where my one point each will be placed.

And JH Williamson who is riding at 2-6, gets the EW money at 16/1 (a GE Elliot horse) - 0.5pts ew.

I fancy Gordon Elliot to have a big day at Cheltenham tomorrow.

Lots of talented riders in this, but one I think is still a bit under the radar and good value for his five in races of this nature is "Super Sean" O'Connor.

The placed Elliott horse meant we made half a point profit on the race; running total is minus 2 points.

And there’s the 12:50 at Newbury today, where our man Eireann Cagney is on the favourite Made All. Fletcher Yarham - a recent winner - rides the second favourite Expressionless.

Both one point win.

1:20 at Leicester tomorrow.

The obvious contender here is Tightly Bound, with Henry Callan (1-1) jocked up. New trip and a tongue-tie.

Two points win at 9/2.

Amber Jackson-Fennell has ridden a fair few winners in Points.

Wouldn't be my idea of a top rider in the sphere, but there's plenty worse.

Minus 6 now.

However, the horse plugged on for a fourth and some ew money. He actually drifted to 10/1, and in the best traditions of an after timer, I lumped on. £2.50 ew. Say it quietly.

Another one tomorrow!

The 16:22 at Nottingham, a ‘Gentlemen only’ (like, wtf) amateur riders flat race.

Erieann Cagney rides again, as does Henry Callan. They are the jocks with the best recent records, so that's where the money’s going.

But at 9/4 and 100/30 we’re not getting rich; or even on the R/FC.

Two points win Cagney beats Callan.

It’s my last day ever at work tomorrow. I’m feeling confident.

Callan wins that particular duel.

Anyway, I’m going to leave this thread alone now. I’ve sort of proved a point that in-form amateur jockeys win more races than jockeys who have had fewer recent rides under rules. But bookies allow for few ricks, so the recent form thing tends to be factored in.

I’ll still keep an eye out for these races, and will post if I spot something unexpected.

Rian Corcoran rode 23 winners in Points last season and can claim 7lb in the last at Kelso today against other claimers.

Dalileo is only a pound above its last winning mark and is a double-digit price.

Win or lose today, the rider is one to keep an eye on.
Off the mark at Ffos Las just now.

He can currently claim TEN for David Pipe.

Rian Corcoran claims ten on Shot Boii in the 1.35 Ffos Las tomorrow.

A 3m chase on Soft ground couldn't suit an ex-Point jockey better.

Currently 11/2 with the William Hill Organisation, as Peter O'Sullevan used to say.

A useless bit of information for you.

The last person to ask me for the fractions in my working days was the very same Peter O'Sullevan.
And of course he got them. If i remember rightly it was 100/8.

:)
