Flatties to follow 2025

Sovereign Sea ran a nice race on his turf debut (2.25 Newbury) to finish second to the fav. I'd say that was a nice run and I will be backing him next time.
Here's my note from that race.

16/05/25 NEWB 2:25 SOVEREIGN SEA
Was trapped in a small pocket for a few strides, accounting for that could have won, by 1L? The pair pulled clear, but I say it could have won, it probably couldn't have done, as the horse looks like it refuses to take the lead. Kept looking at winner. Jockey would straighten it's head and drive, but it would look at winner again. Now has a string of 2nds. Visor look worth a try to help it focus. Obviously looks a winner without a penalty if entered again quickly, but would seem to be a place bet unless headgear tried. Ground was riding gdFM as beating STD's well on the day.

SOVEREIGN SEA entered to run Friday (the 13th) at York. Will be interesting to see if some headgear is tried. Warren Fentiman booked taking 5 off.

Will see who drops out by then, but at the moment doesn't look like I'll be getting involved.

Noted the above - he's reopposing the horse that beat him that day, Burrito but I do think he could turn the form around tomorrow.

Couple from today:
Spy Chief - very taking winner for Gosden at Yarmouth. He's a Kingman half brother to Al Suhail so I imagine he's going on to better things judging by the way he won today.

Blue Bolt took the 3.50 at Newbury today in good fashion and she's nice but the filly she beat Majaz on only her second start made up a huge amount of ground and is one to keep an eye on. Majaz is by Dubawi out of Cushion a decent filly (who was by Galileo out of Attraction - you don't get much nicer than that!)

It throws up a few winners from time to time. Just need to remember when they’re running...or put them in my tracker which seems to overflowing right now and I can’t remember for the life of me why half are there anyway.....😂

There is nothing that ruins my day more than a horse in the tracker that you can't remember why! Always add a simple note to them.

It's going to be some Sussex Stakes if he goes plus Rosallion plus Field of Gold! Plus Henri apparently...think I might need to sweet talk a friend to get me tickets.

Zahrann needs adding here as he's got huge potential to be right at the top. He may have been beaten today but JM holds him in the very highest regard and I think Arc with a bit of juice could be on the agenda. Hopefully he will stay in training as he looks very green still and will benefit from more racing.

Both are potentially nice colts. Particularly with a bit of cut.

Forgot one.....Seraph Gabriel who was second in the Esher Cup, he's one for the tracker as well. Will stay 10f, can see him in the London Gold Cup at Newbury and then Royal Ascot. Liked him a lot, top trainer as well.
Badly need this one tomorrow. It's been a bad week and today was the worst. I had Never Let Go in my tracker after her run behind Footwork at Haydock but she ran next in a listed race and went up 12lbs so I got rid. Had a driving job today as there was little action today so missed the Sandringham. 22/1 Gah!!!

A couple from my book run tomorrow at FfosLas over the extended 7F. Too short in the market though.

31/05/25 YORK 3:50 HUNKY DORY
All up ran to 69 - 70 off 73. Drawn stall 22. Enjoyed the fast ground, couldn't be confident on GDSFT, yet needs a little more of a test. Stayed on well once pace slowed. Ground was riding fast at meeting (definitely GDFM). Hunky Dory can go in when ground closer to GD or GDfm, but wouldn't want it on soft side. Is bred for futher. so similar on not so fast, or 'might' be worth a try over 1M on GDFM.

31/05/25 YORK 5:00 ARCTIC DAWN
All up +1.5L. Hangs away from whip, but does respond to it. Slightly high head carriage, though not really awkward. Ground possibly a little too fast (was genuine GDFM on clock). Action indicates a need slightly slower ground (GD - GDfm).

Have one running in the Haydock 8:15 in an hour or so. The ground is slower, but perhaps not enough to be ideal. With hopefully a stronger pace today and with a bit more experience now, I think I'll have a small EW nibble at 6/1+, as would hate to miss out. Would prefer GDsft - GDSFT, but they've had a couple of light showers on what was GD, so hopefully all the sting is out of the ground.

02/06/25 WETH 8:30 BAMBURGH
A little slow away, but quickly made up ground. Pace slowed down after 3F for a couple of furlongs. Bit short of room. It became very interested in horse to it's right. Still looked green. Had fuel left in tank. Should be more to come as lightly raced 4yo. Was only a class 4 at Wetherby though. Has a bit of a knee action and can be seen to much better effect with more give in ground.

Dunno if anyone watched the Haydock 8:15 last night, but while the pair pulled clear, Bamburgh showed that knee action again, didn't appear to be given an overly hard ride, just a couple of relatively gentle smacks. Again, became a little curious about other runners before following the winner, but not as much as at Wetherby. So maybe no need for headgear, probably still learning it's trade. I need to review the replay again, as was half asleep and trying to get myself organised, but that was my impression with one eye open.
Is quite a small gelding and looks to have large feet for it's size, coupled with the elevated action, I'm going with what I call the 'snow shoe' theory. I've been mocked before on forums for suggesting such an idea, but I'm sticking with it. Big feet, less heavy, therefore doesn't sink in as far on soft. Will take a look at breeding later. Hardly going to be a price to write home about NTO, but an interesting runner nevertheless.

You're absolutely correct on the snow shoe theory and its one I have talked about on here before several times. In fact if I go to a point to point when the ground is soft, I will actively look for those with bigger feet and rule out those with small. It really does pay off.

I’d be a pretty useless paddock judge, but I’ve always thought this logic to be sound and have also followed it to some success.

I think it's just a question of learning the basics. I have gone through it before on here - admittedly I have an advantage as I literally grew up on a horse but if you stick to a small set of rules, it's not too difficult. I might start a thread when I have some time.

Hunky Dory's one of mine as well and yes he is too short to back. When that happens I just put them in multis and I had this one in doubles with Al Riffa and Seraph Gabriel. What a nightmare.

Anyway, worst Royal Ascot I've ever had possibly no winners but when I do my racing review next week I'm including the 2yos so I'll likely have a ton of new trackers next week.

You always know what you talk about, jj, but I remember an article in the dim and distant where the writer had measured the depth hooves had sunk into soft ground. Mostly confirming your big feet thoughts but he was surprised to find a goodly number of small feet there as well. He concluded that being “light on their feet” was the more important and that was down to knee action. Any credence in that do you think?

Can’t remember now if we talked about it when you last raised it.
