1000/2000 Guineas

I backed Aiden's as a saver but there's no WOW factor there.. at least not what you would expect from a 9/4 guineas fav.

The horse who does have the WOW factor is Roger Varian's' Sahkeer who's drifted like a barge 16 on BF, due to the change in the going.

However he's a very well behaved individual who relaxes into cruise control quickly in his races which might see him getting the trip.

He's certainly got the best turn of foot in the race but with the trip and ground to evercome it's fingers crossed.

Real shame that it’s rained. It definitely ought to favour AR now but I hate it that it will inconvenience others and so we don’t get a fair playing field.

AOB suggesting the soft ground will inconvenience AR as much as anything. Obviously it will help him stamina-wise, though.

Mmmmm. He’s always thinking about the “official line” he has to give and suggesting that the horse is a soft ground horse dents his value as a stallion.

Had to mention this "Off with his head"

He did it in the Britannia Stakes and he just did it again.

William Buick siezed the day while Frankie sat there for fully 10 strides before realizing William had gone for it.

Exactly as he did in the Britannia got the horse that should have won easily beat.

I never had a bet if I had I would have happily helped them take him to the tower

I backed Sakheer too but Varian not exactly sounding confident just now

Also had a saver on the jolly so hoping he does the business

Good winner but what was Moore playing at?

AOB before the race told us that there was very little between his two horses on times at home but LBB's final two furlongs were faster, so why did Moore try to come from behind him?

Not that it mattered really since they were both beaten out of sight but it struck me as unfathomable tactics.

Could be that the ground just spoiled the race with rags rated 91 and 97 in the first four or five.

Gotta love these Frankels, though.

Geezus 7/1 into 7/2 someone's had a right touch.....

Little Big Bear will clean up in sprints so no worries there but it will be a brave man who backs Auguste Rodin to win anything

You know full well those rags are not 91 and 97 horses DO. They are not fully rated yet. Frankel beat Excelebration fto as a 3 year old I seem to remember, Excelebration was rated in the 80s on his 2yo form. Will stand corrected on that, memory is sh*t these days.

Just checked, Excelebration was rated 89 when Frankel beat him in the Greenham. Was Excelebration a "rag"?

Enjoyed that. Royal Scotsman ran an absolute cracker for one that was free early. I also enjoyed the hyped up favourite finishing out the back.

Hi Royal I can understand being unexposed but Galeron had had seven runs to date. While I accept he was on a curve it has suddenly got very steep!! I suspect the ground played a huge part in how the race unfolded.

By the way, well done all Chaldean's backers.

The announcement on TV this morning that they were going with the "official" - ie correct - pronunciation of the winner gave me cause for optimism that they're checking these things out but by the end of the day's broadcast they couldn't make their mind up again.

It's Cal-DEE-an (or as close as dammit to that without being able to transcribe the phonetic symbols from the OED).

I bet if you looked at some of the great Guineas and Derby's there are always big priced horses in there, that is just racing. The ground always plays a big part in any race. Will be interesting to see how these 3yo's in this progress.

Correct. And if Hi Royal hadn’t wandered all over the place, we’d all be sitting here saying WTF? (And that’s allowing for improvement and the fact that he had a suitable name for today). I feel if the race had been run on good ground, we may have seen a very different result. The big disappointment was Augustin Rodin who showed he handled ease in the ground last year. But here he never looked like he was travelling.

It may just be me but I like to see a Classic run on good ground where it gives every horse a chance. A great many horses especially on the Flat do not handle ground like this. So you get a strung out race and the winner looks impressive. He may well turn out to be exceptional but I will personally reserve judgment on that. The horse that I thought performed with credit was Royal Scotsman who was keen and out on his own and yet still battled on.

And as a friend of mine said just now on Facebook....”isn’t it nice to see a jockey give all the credit to his horse and not make the win all about himself.....”

How slow do you think the ground was? Palace House stakes run in 60 seconds. The average time over some years is 58.50 seconds. Hardly bottomless ground imo.

Sole Power won Palace House on official good to firm going in 58.74 in 2014 for instance, todays winner just 1.3 seconds slower.

From memory there's been a few big placed horses in The Derby especially in recent years. A bit like those big sales races...so many unknown quantities..always a chance something can run into the frame at a huge price I guess.

Particulary early season 3yo's
