Before I had reached my 16th Birthday I knew two people who were sadly murdered in two totally separate incidents. One of them was a very good friend who had his head blown off at close range by a shotgun. The other one was also shot. Both of the culprits were caught, both served their time behind bars and neither (as far as I know) have ever re-offended. I became friends with the sister of one of the murderers, quite by accident. It's a long story but just in case anyone was wondering why I reacted the way I did to Merlin's comment. It stirred up a few old feelings.
I spent alot of last night thinking about what Merlin had said about people like me (ie childless) not knowing what it must be like for a parent to lose their child. He is absolutely right, I don't know but all I can do is multiply thousands of times what I felt like all those years ago when I lost a friend (and still feel now) and perhaps, just perhaps, I may come somewhere remotely close.
