Four FSS winners yesterday:

Beverley 2.00 Peak Princess (FOXWEDGE)
Goodwood 2.10 Tara Celeb (EXCELEBRATION)
Goodwood 2.45 Klima (SEPOY)
Windsor 4.15 Graphite Storm (DELEGATOR)

Interesting to see that, apart from Frankel's, the percentages seem very similar for all these stallions at the top end of this year's stats. Sir Prancealot must have covered a humungus book of mares to have had 57 different runners before the end of August, and that's just in the UK and Ireland.

Much of the success of first crop sires can be put down to good marketing by the studs that stand them. The numbers and quality of mares that they get sent in their first season seems to me to be as important these days as the stallions' own genetic contribution.

If you don't have the firepower in terms of numbers of quality mares, it's very difficult to compete with huge operators like Coolmore, Darley or even Cheveley Park, unless you get very lucky and get a real crackerjack or two in your stallion's first crop (eg like Showcasing at Whitsbury).

How are last year's top ten first crop sires doing with their second crop of two year olds, I wonder?

I'll have a look later, Venusian.

Feeling is that they haven't done very well, Canford Cliffs has had a winner or two lately but I don't think Zoffany has had many.

Sepoy and Casamento have been disappointing for me but there's still a couple of months left yet.

Foxwedge and Elzaam have done well so far. I thought a lot of the Sir Prancelots would be scooting up in 5 or 5.5 maidens, probably due to his own precocious manner but some of them are doing well over 7 and a mile.

Not seen many Nathaniel runners. Could he be a similar sire to Sea The Stars in time?

Last year's first season sire leaders' results for this year:

ZOFFANY 40 races won from 366 runs
LILBOURNE LAD 32/331
CANFORD CLIFFS 31/342
POET"S VOICE 30/283
DREAM AHEAD 26/250

Thanks, but those figures you posted are for all second season sires winners this season, not just the two year olds.

Anyway, I may have answered my own question (and gone some way towards proving my point!) because I've found the stats for 2016 2-y-os UK and Ireland on the Ownerbreeder site.

They show this season's two year old performances for those leading first crop sires of last year.

And how have team 2015 done so far with their 2-y-os of 2016? "Badly" is the answer. Just look at this...

Zoffany 22 2-y-os, 67 starts, 4 individual winners with 4 races won.
Lilbourne Lad 19 2-y-os, 66 starts, 2 individual winners with 3 races won.
Canford Cliffs 19 2-y-os, 48 starts, 4 individual winners with 5 races won.
Poet's Voice 31 2-y-os, 82 starts, 5 individual winners with 6 races won.
Dream Ahead 20 2-y-os, 43 starts, 3 individual winners with 4 races won.

And not a single black type winner among them!

There's usually a big drop in quality and quantity of mares in a stallion's second book versus the first, so no surprise to see a corresponding big drop in performance for the resulting progeny. But based on his success last year, Zoffany will have a much better book of mares this year (including from Coolmore who aren't great for supporting their first season sires in the breeding shed), and indeed last year because there were very good reports about his first yearlings. It's how he performs with these books of mares that will determine how he is supported in the future.

This years FSS are doing much better generally than previous years. Last year it was a 2 horse race from early summer. Zoffany and Canford Cliffs dominated and had the sort of winners to runners % that about 6+ sires are having this year.
Either this years lot are a vintage lot or we've had a poor lot for the last few seasons.

Of course, even good stallions can have a disappointing season, but this gang of five supposedly superior sires are getting results with their second crop of 2-y-os that are no better than might be obtained by chance.

Their 2-y-o offspring have run 303 times so far this season for a total of 22 victories, that's around a 7% hit rate, rather worse than chance in fact, unless the average field size for such races is greater than 14, which I rather doubt.

I infer from this admittedly small sample that proven effective sires are routinely being neglected as breeders pile into first season sires, sending them higher numbers of mares and better quality ones at that, than they "ought".
