2012 2-y-o season

Watching ATR this afternoon and just before the maiden at 3.30 think it was Sean Boyce who said that "with so many unraced horses we needed an expert view"....cue Luke Harvey. Every one of them was a nice type.

The one that caught my eye, just a quick glance, was the eventual winner GLENARD. He looked to have plenty of size about him and even though it was a narrow win it was his debut and he did have the 'assistance' of Michael Hills.

TORONADO was impressive today in beating DUNDONNELL . Although they drew well clear I was not overly impressed with Certify . Barzalona was over confident and Dwyer nearly caught him napping but she looks a two year old at present and Blue Bunting apart Godolphin's two year old fillies seldom seem to train on .

I will be interested to see who Ballydoyle aim at the Futurity/RP Trophy or whatever it's called these days.I hope Battle of Marengo goes down that road -I could see him being winter favourite for the Derby. The 25/1 available is a decent price.

TRADING LEATHER second on debut to Battle Of Marengo in a Listed event at Leopardstown had no problems following up to win a Gowran maiden by 7 lengths yesterday.

The Shadwell Fillies Mile run at Newmarket probably wasn't the strongest of Group 1s but CERTIFY did all that was asked of her. Reluctant at the stalls and wandering about in the last furlong or two suggests she has had enough for now and is reportedly been put away for the season with hopes of taking the 1000 Guineas in the spring.

I seem to remember around this time last year there was a decent profit to be made by backing godolphin 2yos blind (esp. Al Zarooni's).

Are they hitting a similarly rich vein of form now?

As you can see below lots of runners.

STEELER may not be classiest winner of the Royal Lodge but there haven't been many gamer. A very determined effort.

I thought ROSDHU QUEEN had set too strong a pace in the Cheveley Park but she managed to beat off all her challengers in the final furlong.

Was impressed with her considering she fell out of the stalls.

Thought Maureen deserved another chance. Got no sort of run.

She dictated a slow pace which doesn't say much for the others in behind and that was borne out by the time, the race diodn't look that great on collateral form anyway.Bar the winner would be hard to take anything else from the race, bit of a farce as far as form goes.

OLYMPIC GLORY has been a model of consistency throughout the season and if Dawn Approach hadn't shown up at Ascot he would be unbeaten.

Not that impressive in winning the Grand Criterium at Longchamp on Sunday but he has had a long season.

Is he just 'a 2-y-o' or can he progress through the winter and turn up in the 2,000 Guineas if not win it?

Joseph must be wondering why they carry 9-1 in the Dewhurst but only 8-12 in the Middle Park, where his dad had three runners but he can't do the weight?

He did 9 st riding on a Kleenex (single sheet) in the last tonight at Dundalk. Despite having to do his minimum he was the strongest jockey there tonight - his ride on Prince of Fire clearly demonstrating this. He has performed miracles to do the weights he has this season. Maximum respect to the young man.

Not sure there were any champions on show at Newmarket yesterday; RECKLESS ABANDON very game to win the Middle Park, DAWN APPROACH won eased down but didn't look a very good Dewhurst field, TRADING LEATHER did well to get back after being headed by Montiridge and is likely to get 12 furlongs next year.

I'm not sure the 2yos are all that bad.

The form of the top ones is very consistent, which is usually a good sign. Olympic Spirit is unbeaten except for the time he was beaten by Dawn Approach, who is himself unbeaten in five. Reckless Abandon is also four out of four.

They've also had a lot of foul weather and testing ground to cope with, so they haven't had many opportunities to shine.

i think you right about the top ones being ok..there is just no strength in depth.

Dawn Approach's speed figures yesterday and in the Coventry were well up to par..yesterday a 110 and a 105 in the Coventry...which shows him improving on the clock in line with the months passing as you would expect. Add WFA to those and you get a 128 & 127.

Reckless Abandon ran a decent figure yesterday as well..109

there is just no real oppo to the top 4 or 5 hence we got a dewhurst like yesterday.

Don't know what to make of the Racing Post Trophy.

The winner KINGSBARNS did it well and if Steeler ran to form then it's a good performance.

Bit strange that Kingsbarns hasn't had the entries that Ballydoyle give their potentially classic colts.

First Kingsbarns, now Loch Garman bags a Gr1. There have been some good horses turning up in these late season Navan maidens.
