2016 League Of Neightions Competition

So after a long week it's well done to the Scottish team who pulled off a resounding victory, with all players in profit. Ireland fought long and hard and have the top scoring individual player Grey, England's star player jinnyj took Grey right to the wire and Wales led after Day One but were in freefall thereafter.

Thanks DG! Excellent comp as usual and brilliantly worked out although I am claiming myself to be the moral winner on the grounds Grey used the "standby rule" for Day 1 at Goodwood! I seem to have an unusually high regularity of coming second in these comps (Cheltenham & Royal Ascot this year too - there's always one bugger who gets in the way) - still 11 winners isn't bad and considering I haven't a clue what goes on over the other side of the water, surprising I picked any Galway winners!

Thanks to my one team-mate Marble who responded strongly to my urgings - he may have a future! As for the others.......well the pain and the shame obviously doesn't have an effect!

Well done to the boys at the top though - New Approach, Simmo & Archie!

Well done to the Scots, you were clear winners in the end and would have won even without your absentee bot.

Hard luck in the individual table, jinnyj, I was merely hanging on at the end and needed the line.

As for DG, congratulations on the excellent organisation.

Well played team, and Grey for more than making up for AC's absence.

Small point of order for the individual summer comp, DG. The rules stated:
'An individual competition will run alongside the team competition using the same rules.
Individuals must play on all five days and make selections in all races to qualify for the individual competition. The top four players will score points towards the Summer Tipping Competition.'
Doesn't that disqualify Tanlic from the individual comp?

Thanks for all the hard work anyway.

Thanks DG, great competition as always, I really enjoyed it.

And well done to us! I think I might have been more of a hindrance than a help though - apart from yesterday when I did a bit better!

Well done Grey on winning the individual comp - and Jinnyj - impressive scores from both of you.

Yes it does Archie, you can have the 5 points for fourth

Thanks Roger. That was good fun.

Well done to Scotland.

And apologies to my Welsh team mates. I'm clearly crap at being Welsh.

Pointing out now that unless swedish chef amends this to read either Jeremy's Joy or Jeremy's Jet (no such runner as Jeremy's Hat) I will be treating it as a NR and the selection will default to the favourite

Sorry DG I was out all day at the seaside - not sure how I did that mate?

Any disputes my decision is final.

Archie's reminder on this rule re Tanlic got me thinking, I should not have declared Grey as the winner as he failed to make selections at Goodwood on Day One which I'd forgotten about, so I'm changing the top four to

1. jinnyj

2. simmo

3.archie

4.NewApproach

The points on the Summer Tipping thread have been adjusted to reflect this

Despite posting that he wanted to play for Scotland he hasn't posted any selections all week even though he has been online. The rules of the competition are that players who do not post a selection have a bet on the favourite in the first three races with their NAP on the first race.

It's far from satisfactory but I can't change a rule in mid competition. I did consider a rule calling selections losing ones in that scenario but that penalises the rest of the team who make an effort to play every day. I also considered reverting to the horse with the highest racecard number. It may well be that Tanlic might have selected a lot of the horses anyway, or it might just be a "Freak Year"

I don't know what the answer is, but I don't think I would accept an entry from Tanlic next time, if there is a next time.

In general terms fewer players play the League Of Neightions each year, two years ago was approaching 48 I think, last year was 32, this year 16, one of whom didn't show up. I may run it as an individual competition in future but that's just me thinking aloud so to speak.

On the subject of no-shows, perhaps a fairer solution would be to allocate them a score equivalent to the average of every other player for that day. Other team members are not unfairly disadvantaged and they are not potentially unfairly advantaged by a run of favourites winning.

On making it an individual competition - I think this would be the equivalent of making the St Leger all aged. Much of the banter and enjoyment on the thread stemmed from the team play - which wouldn't be present in an individual competition, although I accept that you might still want to don the old leather gear.

Thanks simmo, it's a thought.

When the competition ran on Neigh, each team had a captain and in the event of a non show by one of the team the captain had the option of using his own selections a second time or choosing a different set of selections for the missing player. That however depended on the captain being around at the start of the day's racing when it became clear someone hadn't posted and it sort of fell apart.
