Atkins Diet

Melendez - sorry, but you're not quite right on that. You're on loads of calories! The weight-loss phase is meats (of all kinds), cream, eggs, cheese, galore. When you go over to the maintenance diet, it's really normal foods (as I already put on here), although you can snack on certain things. Obviously, three French Fancies for teatime, a packet of Doritos, and a little bedtime snack of half a tube of Pringles aren't in it!

But it isn't by any means a low calorie diet, or low fat. What it definitely IS, though, is low in carbohydrates, which would appear to be the main problem with today's, er, huge problem of obesity, due to the huge consumption of crisps, sandwiches-to-go, fajitas, paninis, baguettes, burgers, and bread in every form and variety unknown even a few years back, cereals (ditto), chips, micro-chips, crinkle chips, french fries, and gega-calorific dressings on otherwise 'healthy' salads! And don't get me started on how many calories are in beers and booze in general... :o

Mo: it's boiling weather. Wrap a black plastic bin-bag around you, and do the garden. You'll lose inches, if not pounds. Wear one under your kecks at school for a week, and see how much of you has dripped away. It's the cheapest sauna known to mankind, and it works! ;)

I can't afford to lose anything from my mankind :shy:

I remember Archie Gemmell (of World Cup goal-of-all-time-against-Holland fame) wore a bin bag at training to keep his weight down. I'm not sure dehydration is what I want.

Having said that, I've met some women who could do with a wearing a bin bag over their head for a few months.

"Maurice," she whispered softly into his ear, "are you sure that you meant 'your mankind'? Not just your manhood? Because, if it's THAT big, darling, I know someone in the film industry..." B)

Come on Maurice, think positive! What about a brisk walk at lunchtime in the lovely summer sun and a bit of power walking in the evening after dinner. It will clear your mind, give you time to think, and you will then deserve a nice long cold drink when you get back, and you probably won't even think about the booze. B) Life changes are a bit more radical, they cannot always be done overnight, but losing 6-7lbs can happen in a month once you make the decision - and may well lift your spirits. (not the alcohol ones I hasten to add)
It does sound as if you may be a bit depressed too Maurice. Have you booked a summer holiday yet?

Maybe it's just the way I eat.

If you eat an 8oz fillet of steak for lunch and dinner or an omelette or chicken, with a bit of salad you are still well under your daily calorie allowance.

I ended up eating no butter - as you can't eat anything to put it on. No Cheese - since no bread or crackers. Very little cream, apart from the odd spoon that might go into a sauce - since no cakes and little fruit (don't like cream with fruit anyhow)are allowed. Basically it was just a lump of meat with a scrawny salad twice a day - often once a day, as it was hard to get anything available at work other than a slice of plastic ham.

I did end up hungry, as potatoes, rice and pasta are the real fillers - there's only so much meat I can eat.

I think there is also a psychological thing going as well - although he says you can eat as much fat as you like, you know your on a diet and don't really want to pig out to much on the basis that the diet should work as long as you steer clear of carbs, but logically it should work even better if you don't go mad on fats as well.

I started the year with the intention of losing 3 stone.I bought an€800 treadmill which is the biggest ornament in the house.Basically at the start of May I still hadn't lost any weight-since then I have started cycling whenever possible and being a bit sensible with food.I have lost about a stone since then and it doesn't feel like hard work.

Thats the theory but cycling does it for me.Strangely enough anytime I get (comparatively)fit I always seem vulnerable to colds.

Me too. My GP told me I must harbour a deep-seated virus which gets the chance to emerge when the body is recovering from excessive exercise and resistance is lowered.

A second GP told me that was a load of sh*te. :o

Mo - I'm beginning to feel I should get out and march about the seafront every evening, now you've started this blasted thread! I'm in desperate need of shedding not pounds, but stones, and I think you've given me the impetus to start it. Would you like to take on a bet? How about £100 to the first of us to lose three stones? I promise to be weighed by our flats' manager (Mum couldn't see an elephant any more - er, no, come to that, she sees me daily - so no good asking her), and Mrs. Mo can weigh you. We are both honest enough not to be naughty, I think. Once a week we could PM each other our weight.

Would that tiny incentive assist you to stop talking about diets and actually get on with one? No time scale apart from it being this year (and six months to lose 3st isn't too crazy). Up for it?

PS: of course, I don't know how much you want to lose! :shy: If it's just a stone, we could make it a race to the first to lose it, but reduce the bet to a pony. (Shetland, of course, for you.)

Luke definitely has the right idea. Sensible eating (ish) and exercise. Nothing too drastic, and walking (just up the tempo to more than a stroll) is perfect for those that don't like the idea of a gym or cycling etc. It is so much easier to maintain if you find something you actually like doing, and cutting down on forbidden foods is a sure way to lose a few lbs! In this weather with all the lovely salads around, cut down on the booze intake and you can start losing weight. In two weeks you can start buying some nice new clobber to show off your svelte figures on the beach!

Go on Mo, you know it makes sense and now you even have the offer of a sparring partner too. B)

For what it's worth, I really wouldn't bother with the Atkins Diet. My aunt has been swearing by it for years now, but I can't have it. Even before the health scare stories came out, I was highly dubious about a diet that advocated any type of one-sided diet - cut down on carbs, sure, but cutting them out completely (particularly when it means that you are increasing your intake of fats) cannot be good for you, long term.

As has been said, the only way of dieting successfully (& keeping the weight off) is to alter your diet permanently, exercise regularly & eat less. It doesn't take long before your stomach gets smaller if you cut down the amount that you eat, and you don't get hungry. You can always cheat by drinking a load of water if you are hungry as it fills you up!

Another tip to fill you up at lunchtime are those "Smoothies" which are lovely fruit drinks, that are very thick, and just taste full of goodness. They have some excellent flavours - cranberry, mango strawberry etc. They do have over 100 calories BUT they are full of vitamins, and are better for you than a bar of chocolate. :) One of those and a wholemeal sandwich, limited low far spread, some lean ham or chicken, egg (low calorie mayo) and some salad and perhaps some fruit and later in the afternoon if you are still hungry a nice low fat yoghurt. Ideal for these hot summer days. B)

Or a bottle of Irn Bru and a sausage supper. You decide.

Come on Simmo, don't rain on my parade. I am trying to get Maurince in a bikini in 6 weeks time! B)

It's sometimes a life changing decision Simmo and at the end of the day, if people are happy with their weight (whatever it is), I think it is very hard to encourage them to lose weight UNLESS they really want to. Bad habits die hard.

My fella is now taking those Wellman tablets and he is convinced they make him feel better, although he cannot pinpoint why. He changed the way he ate and drank a couple of years back and he feels so much better for it... and I have stopped nagging so that probably helped too. B) I have started taken the female equivalent, and yes, I do feel 100% but my wee is now nearly yellow! (or is that too much information?) :shy:

Getting into a bikini is not a problem <_<

Krizon, your bet would be a non-starter on those terms. Everyone knows the more overweight you are the easier it is to lose the excess, so you'd be at an unfair advantage :P

It should be a weight-loss handicap, or pecentage weight-loss.

If we each had to lose 15% of our current weight I'd only have to lose 1st 10lbs compared to your .....

Anyway, I'm booked up for a week in Spain early in July so I'll have to act fast if I want to turn my paunch into the paragon of masculinity that sparked the invention of the washboard.

Right Maurice, perhaps first day of your diet tomorrow. We will have that six pack rippling in 2-3 weeks. A holiday in the offing is always a nice goal to work towards. B) I will even sponsor you £2 for ever lb you lose before you go on holiday to go to a charity of your choice. Now, theres an offer you cannot refuse. :D
