BMI Categories:

Underweight = BMI below 18.5
Normal weight = 18.5-24.9
Overweight = 25-29.9
Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater

Someone of 6'1" who weighs 15 stone 10 lbs has a BMI of 29.0

Mine is 26.3 so I too am overweight.

You calculate BMI using the formula:

BMI = ( kg/m² )

weight in kilograms
————————————
height in meters²

But there are lots of calculators on the net that will do it for you.

Paul, that is the calculation used by medical people all over the world. There are sophisticated machines that calculate your BMI. I recently had mine done with one, during an annual medical. It gave almost exactly the same result as using the formula.

I have had mine done and it is the same result. I don't feel obese though and I can run 5 miles in half an hour....

Still I was planning on dieting this summer so that is set in stone now.

You are far from alone - I'd bet that most on here come into the overweight category. But it's a bit frightening to think that you need to lose two and a half stone to get into the "Normal weight" category!

At 27.9 I'm "overweight" on one site and "marginally overweight" on another, and in the 56th percentile on the first (meaning 44% of people are more overweight than me.

Right, here's my plan for tomorrow...

Breakfast: muesli & fat-free yoghurt. If I've still time before I leave for work, I'll have a slice of bread and jam with some tea.

Lunch: my usual tin of drained fruit salad.

Dinner: roast chicken (no skin) with loadsa salad and a small portion of potatoes.

Later: non-stop watermelon and/or water.

I'll let you know if I stick to it. (The schedule, not the watermelon.)

I see you've omitted the endless tea/coffee, lunchtime Irn Bru, and double Glenmorangie in the evening... <_<

I'm starting off with wallpaper paste and the usual semi-skimmed (that's Alpen and milk-o), and a couple of cups of tea. Probably fruit or veg juice or something very light for lunch and a sensible dins. I'm going to raid the local produce shop for loads of lovely salad vegs and fruit. :)

No, dear forumites, I am NOT going to put up the daily menu, since after thinking about this for five years, it's suddenly arrived and I haven't quite prepared for it. But I am on the attack, with the goal the end of the year. I'm going to weigh myself in the a.m., before I've had anything to eat or drink, because that's really the best time. Then there'll probably be a scream from Brighton that reaches to the Glens...

Keep the faith, Mo, it's going to be a tough one for me!

I don't want to put a dampener on it but that must have been an American site...

I'm 6', 12 st 7 lbs and on my way out

Yes, have mine, and the McVitie's fruit shortcake, and the blueberry muffins, the three varieties of fudge, and the large wedge of Port Salut... :cry: You sound like a fit bloke, HT, but then all that anger does burn off calories! ;)

I'm too disgusted with the results from the scales to show them - Kathy, and Mo (because you didn't mind putting up your weight), I'll PM the horror to you! The goal is a MINIMUM of 3st off by year-end, though 5st would be a much, much better result, but at my advanced age, I think that's possibly a bit difficult to achieve the loss of a stone per month. Anyway, that's it. I'm starting from NOW! :D

I think it was American, Brian, but I'd hate to think only 44% of Americans were more o/weight than me (or I, for the pedants).

But there are a lot more Americans than there are Brits, not so? So you're not playing on a level field. Mo, from the sights I saw yesterday without my gun, you're far from a tub. Even I managed to feel almost normal next to some of the human outhouses that besported themselves in regrettably tight clothing. Is there a less appetizing sight (unless you're a cannibal) than a teenaged girl weighing around 20st, with her pale white gut hanging out over her - God help us - mini skirt?

Cheers for that, Jon - I was just thinking about going to get some lunch but I feel pretty ill after reading that!!! You're not wrong either - you ought to see the sights out here, there are no end of local [big] girls wandering about in a mini skirt & a cropped (or bikini) top, with a massive overhang... :what:

:lol: :lol: :lol: Flippin' 'eck! All that healthy eating, and he's a nicomaniac!

What IS it about you Scots? Smoked salmon, smoked mackerel, smoked men?

Hope all is going to plan Krizon and Maurice. My boyfried has lost 6lb this week..... by not drinking any booze! :blink:

I haven't weighed myself for about three years (too frightened to) so I judge how lardy I am on how well my clothes fit. I'm useless at sticking to any diet because I love my grub too much. Wheat intolerances run in my family, and I'd noticed I had a lot of the signs too. I'd also noticed that if I didn't eat wheat for a few days I felt much better and lost weight. By cutting down on wheat I had gone from a size 18 to a size 16. For the past two weeks I have totally cut wheat out from my diet and my size 16 clothes are feeling very loose. If only I could stop eating all the fatty crap too I'd lose even more weight :lol:

Griffin, you can get gluten-free cereals, bread, and cake mixes from most health shops. Worth a try, as that's an intolerance thousands of people have without realizing it. Like many allergens, people actually crave it (I'm forgotten all the techie stuff why, but it's often true), and can't go long without. Worth a go - I have to say I always feel better without it, too, and a couple of days without it certainly helps to flatten the tummy.

Kathy - so far, I am the soul of piety. A puffed rice cereal yesterday, followed by a tiny avocado and salad for lunch, and one small croissant as a treat, with a small amount of Port Salut cheese (which I've realized I don't actually like that much!) for supper. Orange juice, lots of water, 2-3 cuppas.

Today, Alpen for brekkie, and more lovely fresh salad with self-made cider vinegar/olive oil/mustard dressing for lunch. Lots of water, 2-3 cuppas. Probably a health shop slice (not a whole one!) of their own veggie pizza for din-dins, with perhaps a tomato. Treat for tonight: ONE champagne truffle - probably the most spectacular ones I've ever had, and one really is enough. (I'm kidding myself - six is even better, but they really are so rich, even I feel icky!) :D

Got a bit of a pressure headache today: possibly the weather, or the lack of three tons of sugar per day? Feeling very positive, though. ;)

Keep having the treats Krizon, but just less of them and find different ones to have. I am sure NO diet is any fun if you can't have any treats at all. Life would be positively unbearable for you and everyone around you! :P

So far today:

Brekkies: muesli & fat free youghurt followed by a slice of bread & jam.

Lunch: a small bowl of chicken tikka & pasta followed by an apple juice.

Dindins: a little spag-bol with some red wine.

Later: watermelon.
