Montjeu colt stars at strong December opener

BY ED PROSSER 12:58PM 21 NOV 2011

TATTERSALLS' December Sale kicked off on Monday with a day of yearlings, of whom many who had found their way to Newmarket having either failed to sell or missed their intended engagements earlier this year.

None proved more popular than a son of Montjeu out of a half-sister to Middle Park Stakes winner Hayil who had been returned after making 200,000 euros at Deauville in August and realised 150,000gns yesterday afternoon.

Three bidders offered six figures for the Castledillon Stud offering with Gerard Butler, accompanied by owner Alan Spence, going to 120,000gns. Anani Antoniadis, who frequently buys for the Russian-based Stud 711, was underbidder with David Redvers striking the successful bid.

"He just had a bit of quality about him and I believe he had a throat infection at Deauville," said Redvers. "That's it for yearlings for me this year. The trainer is undecided but he's been bought for Pearl Bloodstock and is the 33rd yearling we have got now.

"There will be 20 trainers worldwide next season for Pearl with Ralph Beckett, Mikel Delzangles and Ger Lyons having the biggest numbers. We have bought a handful more horses privately and are struggling to keep under a total of 50 horses in training. We may have to sell a couple on and I was pleased that Wade Giles (now named Destined For Glory), who we sold, won a Grade 2 in Hong Kong on Sunday."

The day may have been light on star quality, with the smallest number of six-figure lots since 2005, but with several trainers still having orders to fill, there was a solid 76 per cent clearance rate and a median that amazingly shot up by 128 per cent to 20,500gns.

The 25,109gns average, although some way off the record for this sale, rose by 36 per cent and even with 44 fewer horses sold than in 2010, the turnover increased by five per cent to 3,766,300gns.

Balthazaar's Gift retired to stand in Canada

BY MARTIN STEVENS 3:44PM 21 NOV 2011

BALTHAZAAR'S GIFT, a stalwart of the sprinting ranks over the past seven seasons, has been retired to stand in Canada.

The eight-year-old son of Xaar arrived in the country yesterday and is in quarantine before starting his stallion career at Arrow Track Stallions, a new operation in Ontario, next year.

Bernard McCormack, whose Cara Bloodstock will manage Balthazaar's Gift's stud career, said: "He's a fine-looking horse and was very fast; he was the joint-champion three-year-old sprinter in England.

"He is the property of a syndicate and will stand at Can$5,000 live foal. He should suit Ontario mares."

Balthazaar's Gift won a stakes race in every season from two to seven - except for when he wasthree, when he was a narrow second to Les Arcs in the Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes.

At two he won the Group 2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte; at four he landed the Group 3 Hackwood Stakes; at five he scored in a Windsor Listed contestand at six he put up one of his best performances, beating top sprinter Regal Parade by three lengths to win the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes.

Last year at seven Balthazaar's Gift triumphed in the Group 2 Park Stakes at Doncaster, with Premio Loco second and the likes of Cat Junior, High Standing, Rainfall and Shakespearean unplaced.

Balthazaar's Gift, who won eight of his 54 starts, was bred by Pat Beirne out of the placed Last Tycoon mare That's Your Opinion, a half-sister to smart French miler Green Lady.

Ontario will enjoy an influx of smart stallion prospects next year, as its ranks will also be joined by Breeders' Cup Mile winner Court Vision and Grade 1 Ancient Title Stakes scorer Gayego.

...sorry I expect you do. Although I'm not really aware who you are (location: the garden, occupation: unknown). If you were asking have I been to see him in Ireland the answer is no. Why do you ask?

I wasn't going to bother going to look at him as on paper he is not at all appealing but I was feeling a bit guilty about that so if I got some positive feedback from people who had seen him I would. Feedback so far is that he is ok so I'll have to go have a look at the fecker. I saw Captain Marvelous (another son of Invincible spirit) and he was what I was looking for but he he's leaving for France.

Tatts December foals sale, from the RP site:

First six-figure lot

An Exceed And Excel half-brother to promising two-year-old Strictly Silver (550) is the first foal to make six figures this week when selling for 100,000gns to Willie Browne. Paul McCartan is the underbidder (14 minutes ago)

Again from the RP site:

ON A day when the competition for foals at Tattersalls really steps up a level, Demi O'Byrne had to part with 375,000gns to see off Charlie Gordon-Watson to secure a Galileo colt offered by Plantation Stud.

"I should think he'll be kept to race for the three owners, said O'Byrne.

"He's a really grand foal. I don't need to tell you what Galileo has done."

The colt is a brother to Gravitation, a Group 3 winning filly when trained by William Jarvis and descends from a family that includes the multiple Group 1-winner Fame And Glory.

The three owners O'Byrne refers to are, John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith who have encountered phenomenal success with Galileo this season.

Notable successes for the owners include Cape Blanco, who established himself as one of the leading 10f horses in Northern America, with victory in three Group 1 races. He will be the first son of Galileo to stand in America and will stand at Coolmore's Ashford base.

In Europe, the five-time winner Maybe has flown the flag for the owners and was crowned champion juvenile filly, her unbeaten run culminating with a victory in the Group 1 Moyglare Stakes.

First-crop sire averages at Tatts December

A little exercise in playing with Stud Fee + 15k or 8k costs to get foal to sale and return on investment (ROI)...and ignoring the guineas to pound conversions because I'm being lazy and these are a bit rough & ready. Also assuming full 2010 stud fee was paid up. 11 of 18 profitable on paper at one level or both...

From the RP site:

THE Tattersalls December Sale stepped up a gear when Miss Keller sold for 625,000gns to become the top lot of the day.

Sold by Three Chimneys Sales, who also sold the Group 3-placed Pyman's Theory for 125,000gns, the recent E P Taylor Stakes winner was bought by Waratah Thoroughbreds.

MichaelGoodbody, sat with Waratah's Paul Fudge in a packed auditorium to clinch the sale of the Grade 1-winning daughter of Montjeu.

Bidding started at 200,000gns, but stuck around 250,000gns before it excelerated through the prices as Fudge and Goodbody saw off the underbidder Nakamura Tomoyuki of Keiai Farm, Japan.

A week after the win of Toyomitsu Hirai's Eishin Apollon in the Mile Championship at Kyoto, representatives of Hirai's Eishin Farm increase their family involvment, paying 360,000gns for close relative Quelle Vitesse.

Consigned by New England Stud, Quelle Vitesse, by Sadler's Wells, will be heading to Ireland to foal and will visit a British or Irish stallion before heading to Japan.

Things to bear in mind from sales returns are that the seller loses commission to the auction house (Miesque - please check me on these figures!) of around 10-15%, there is a sales entry fee of at least £500-600 per foal, and there are preparation fees to be paid to foal preppers, often studs or consignors, also around the same mark as the entry fee, plus transport of foal to sales. If you do your own prep, fine, but it's several weeks of in-hand walking and obedience, and if you've got your own transport, then it's just your petrol costs.

So for a foal making, say, £10K at the sales, knock off £2K, and if it's a yearling, you've had the cost of keep (food, vet, farrier) for a year also factored in (and off the return). For breeders, the price the little 'orse sells for is not the price the breeder pockets.

Yup - it's 'sharp intake of breath' time, Miesque!

By the way, got the Cheveley Park 2012 brochure yesterday (even though I did let them know last year that I wouldn't have any mares and to save their postage):

DUTCH ART £12,000

KYLLACHY £10,000

MEDICEAN £8,000

PIVOTAL £45,000 (down £40K from his brief but grand days!)

VIRTUAL £4,000

All 1st October LFFR terms.

Aqlaam has had a decent start there. I was never a fan of the horse but his stock must be decent lookers.
