Champion Hurdle Road ToThread 24/25

Trying to think of a reigning Champion Hurdler who had so much universal disrespect going into next year's renewal.

I will have to laugh if State Man wins it again - he will probably be the least-respected dual Champion Hurdle winner in history if he does. 😂

That said, Night Nurse was 15/2 when he won his second one and in my book he's still just about the best Champion Hurdler ever.

Funny old game, Saint,

If he's the same horse as two years ago, it will be the easiest 4/1 winner you ever backed because it will just be a question of "how far?"

But if he isn't....

State Man hasn't raised a gallop this season
There's no proof Tuesday will be any different
Lossiemouth was always shorter in the market but she had a choice.
Unlike State Man who had no where else to go.
Every chance he could run another stinker

He doesn’t need to be as good, Ian, because his “good” was light years ahead of anything. Nico gave him a slap for the first time at Kempton, but maybe the only thing we don’t know about him is how much he finds under pressure since he’s never been under any. Maybe he’d fold, but I doubt it.

That's a fair comment, but, in my experience, when a horse goes it goes and history is littered with all this "he could win it at 80% (or whatever) of his best" stuff but, come the crunch, if they don't run their race they get beat time and time again and often don't even get placed.

I think he wins it on the bit by half of Gloucestershire or, less likely, has to fight and maybe scrambles home, or has a recurrence of what made him have so much time off since 2023 and is virtually pulled up.

I think you've got a good bet at 4/1 obviously, but I don't think he's quite home and hosed just yet.

I've seen too many get beaten in this scenario over the years.

Fascinating renewal, though, not least because the second in has just as many questions to answer.

When something looks too good to be true in this game, it's often because it isn't and Brighterdaysahead may well have been the only one to run her race at Leopardstown that day.

With CH,it is true - and he's fully expected to prove it.

Ground had turned heavy in 1977 and NN after a few defeats.
Thankfully I kept the faith that day, got lots of chocolate from the 5p ew winnings.

They called it the Golden Era ,with Night Nurse Monksfield and Sea Pigeon all winning Champion Hurdles.
However the never met each other when they were all in their prime.
Night Nurse in his prime was head and shoulders above the others and deserved every inch of the 182 bestowed upon him

Constitution Hill could go close but Brighterdaysahead would have to beat State Man by several lengths and Constitution Hill would have to beat her by some way to convince Timeform he is worthy of a 183

I'd have thought you'd have secured a bigger profit by manually cashing out/hedging by laying the horse on the machine, Maurice.

The maths with bookie cash outs only ever favour one party - and it ain't the punter.

That said, if you've bet ante-post you need to hedge ante-post because if the horse gets pulled out after the final decs you do your ante-post dough and the punters you've laid it to in the "day-of-race" market get their money back.

Apologies if I'm stating the bleedin' obvious - I'm good at that. 😂
