Cheltenham 2016

Via Twitter/Irish Field:

Willie Mullins expressed himself happy with Gold Cup bound Vautour who schooled over eight fences after racing. He confirmed Djakadam was left in his box "as he would only have fallen on his hole, if we had brought him along".

Don Cossack (Russell) and No More Heroes (Cooper) also schooled besides each other, both looked well within themselves, Don C in particular went well.

I'd be very interested to know whether they'd stick cheekpieces on him for the Gold Cup. They've mentioned that they are under consideration and that he's worked in them before. Would be a tough call as you wouldn't want to be too keen early on in a Gold Cup.

I always said Willie Mullins had a way with words ...

Don Poli, Vautour, Ballycasey and Pont Alexandre all apparentl galloped after racing today. Not sure if they jumped any fences or not.

I'm only back in the house now & watching a recording of it. Interesting Cooper rode Don Poli but then No More Heroes when Don Cossack went around.

[h=1]denial[/h]1. a psychological defense mechanism in which confrontation with a personal problem or with reality is avoided by denying the existence of the problem or reality

;)

Mullins said of his quartet: "Vautour made a mistake at the first, I think he was told we were asking him to go another two & a half furlongs further than last time but on a stiffer course. He **** himself which is what probably caused the mistake"

Our local rag rivals the Daily Express for its scare stories regarding the weather so this article is one to be taken with a pinch of salt, although we might need more than a pinch of salt if it comes to pass. Point is though if they're only part right, there could be quite a few frosts to come and we might see the covers deployed this year

As you say, DG, a scare story about the weather, but severe frosts - with the covers deployed - are all very manageable these days. A recently as 2013, we had overnight temps of minus 5, and the meeting still went ahead with no problems.

Totally agree, Archie - I spent the two coldest days of my life there. The two gallons of Guinness I drank in the 'Best Mate Stand' couldn't warm me up, either. I returned home a greying and dishevelled shell of the man I was, who embarked on the train at Paddington on the Tuesday.

That was Champagne Fever beating My Tent in supreme. If memory serves me was start that day delayed an hour?

Yes and they binned the X country Kauto, deferring until later in the week, which thankfully turned out to be a permanent move. I remember downing my umpteenth beer in the Landsdown while waiting for confirmation that racing went ahead.

I had a smoke outside Paddington station on the way up there and was wearing leather, wool lined gloves but went into Tie Rack and bought some cashmere ones to wear underneath. We were in the town on the Monday night and I don't ever remember this country being so cold.

Smelly sheep, high winds, and frosts have all contributed to play havoc with my ticker at various points during the last 15 years.

Pain in the hole!!

I noticed that earlier and that would partly explain why they were shortest about practically every fancied horse yesterday. That and the fact they're a shite bookie.

It was a year ago today - on the Monday a fortnight before Cheltenham - that PP announced their Cheltenham day 1 offer, commencing from 8:00 am the following day. Wonder if they'll do the same later today and hopefully it'll apply to their shops too.

Normally includes the shops and will mean a day out to London for me assuming it revolves around Min in the Supreme...

At the moment we are getting daily frosts and even at lunchtime is still really cold, definitely reminiscent of 2013.

Mild damp day forecast for tomorrow with temp in double figures.

Cold march overall with up to 30 mm rain over the first ten days and then cold and dry according to accuweather; let us see how it bears out .

Thanks for the updates and keep us posted; small bags for Ryanair so we need it right or will be visiting charity shops for more than just racing books !
