I said earlier on thread that I don't believe there's a bias at the curragh despite a few results in handicaps with a slight trend to the highs the results to me have always looked that way due to the mass of field congregating on the stands side or simply most horses being drawn there and lows have run well coming standside to get touched off after comceding big starts.Today that was borne out by the debutant 2yr old smash Williams destroyiong 24 runners from the 1 draw and winning by 6 1/2ls on the far side, the time was very good only 1.13 slower than the older horse group 3 probably one of the best debuts of the whole season, although this time of year I mentioned a month ago the times would be a lot closer, but still with loads of improvement to come she could be anything. The running themes been the 2yr old formlines not being great as I've saiud from early season,so looking out for new horses could be the way to go and she may just be worth cionsidering for some ante post prices at huge prices for bigger races as the benchmark looks pretty average at best...

Jack dexter 20/1 365,skybet,victor,ppower,corals,hills,sportsbook,betway Ayr gold cup

Last season jack dexter had the look of a horse maybe on slight decline but even that might be a bit unfair as has to run in the top class sprints on mainly ground he has little chance of winning,he's been one of my fav horses as I spotted and followed hom from day one when I put him on here. This season he has looked good as ever he's had 8 races finishing 4th to Astaire, nadir in group 3s then a third to glass office at York in a group 2 all on the wrong ground, then a 2nd to pearl secret in a group 2 over the wrong trip 7th of 18 in a group 1 at Newmarket races he should've been well beaten on fast ground but run unusually well.Last time out was in a handicap at goodwood off 109 again running well on gd/fm ground finishing 8th of 27 not beaten that far.
Taking prices at this point is speculative as it could turn out like last year again he ran well when finishing 8th in the gold cup but on wrong side his sp was 20/1,given if the ground had been gd/sft that day and drawn high I'm sure he would've been half that price at best,at the moment he is 20/1 with all books its worth taking the 20s now as if it turns up gd/sft on the day he will undoubtedly be a buig gamble. The more you look at his form this season it wopuld be hard not to see him figuring against horses that really are in the main exposed and a lot of them he has given a race on gd/fm this season like huntsmans close revelino etc,if ground turned soft he would be strong fav to turn form around with them.
There may yet be bigger prices over the next week, but you only have to see even on gd/fm the books have been returning his sps of 20/1 on ground he realistically shouldn't be running well on,he still looks the best horse in the race to me and he's actually a pound lower than last year and 2 pound lower than when he was 3rd in 2013.Hopefully the ground won't be gd/fm like last year, more encouragingly than ever was his run at York in the group 2 when runner up to glass office just good ground yet was nearest finish,so even if ground was just good I still could see him running well if the ground goes softish expect a massve gamble with fergal who seems to be getting more out of him this season...
Of course if ground remains on fast side then he would be unlikely winner but that's the risk you take backing something that could easily be half the current price on the day,i actually think he would be even shorter but that's just a guess at present time..

Very impressive win from the 6yr old looked diofferent clas to these and the look of group horse running against handicappers, marco botti has only had him since December. He's been mainly running him in meydan in better races but his form as 3yr old when beating taleban 114 and invicuts 116 looked likely tobe top class. In 2012 was 4th behind plenty of kicks 116 and poker face 114,those runs were on very soft or heavy ground and strangely ground he has not raced on since 2012.Todays ground was only good but still looked different class,i suspect marco botti has another big handicaop in mind for the autumn on slower ground or will be back to group classes. He could well get underestimated and may well be back to his best form of a couple of seasons ago.Think its worth looking out for prices for some of the autumn handicaps as he could well be a thrown in...

40/1 Cambridgeshire lads corals hills

The gelding never did anything after this run off 98 last season, was very disappointing especially as he did look a class act he's now 7 but still only had 14 lifetime runs,im not sure what problems he's obviously had went onto run in metydan for botti showing very little and is now with jane chapple hyam.He was so impressive at 40/1 the price looks massive if he could repeat that form, looking back at that haydock race the 3rd elhaame and the 4th fattsota were rated 92 and 99 now rated 106 and 108 and he looked different class and the fact the trainer got an 85 rated 3yr old to win a listed race beating 100+ older horses on Saturday, shows the probability is she will have him right on the day.As mentioned in the above the ground has seemed almost immaterial to him, heavy to good the only ground that doesn't appear in his form is gd/fm he looks worth having a few coppers on at 40/1,the facrt he's had some time off doesn't seem that important looking at previous past form either..
He will be off 99 only a pound higher than when hacking up in that haydock race above,i havn't looked at the race yet at all I just saw the price of this and it looks decent regardless of what's in the race in if he can just repeat that run!!

Priceless

A lot slower ground than put up by COC and one of the most impressive performances of the season,a fillies maiden won by clive cox trained priceless she's won by an easy 7ls asnd in doing so ran the fastest debut time of the season actually running quicker than the class 4 handicap wnner gramercy rated 83 by .01 something very rarely seen by 2yr old debutants. She obviously loves desperate ground, she could be absolutely anything and she could well get underestimated during the autumn especially if she gets this sort of ground, just on this run alone she's run to a 100+ already in a canter. Will be looking out for some future prices in everything she's entered, obviously with eae of win related to doctor brown she could well be running over further as well!!

Smash Williams 20/1 lads ppower 2000 guineas

The 20/1 for smash Williams looks a bit of value,to win races that close together on two debut runs and win with so much in hand and produce very good times in both races,he looks far better value than air force blue, think the phoenix was a slowly run race and think the runners in that race underperformed. He's out of fracas who was rated 111 won up to 1m2fs and on heavy and gd/fm and smash Williams has already shown diversity on both grounds, from what's been seen this season they havn't looked a great bunch and he looks open to loads of improvement I think 20/1 could look massive come april next year!!

Probably one of the most impressive performances of the season visually and on the clock this half brother to saayeer, this was no more than a piece of work and was probably good for another 4-5lengths and still the finishing time was very quick I can't find to many races run quicker over this c/d and considering how easily he won I doubt hardly anything has wo more impressively at the track.Crombay appears to hold the form down slightly, but was in first time hood and really the winner could've been 10ls better than him anyweay, crombay sits on a mark of 67,i think this mark with the hood may turn out to be ok so that will be interesting as well as he finished clear of sign of the kodiac, sign of the zodiac finished 11th in Coventry recent third in maiden this insignificant little maiden may get overlloked.
.Hopefully the handicapper will take the seconds rating as the marker and put him in around 90 that would look extremely generous to me,i've looked at a few times run at ripon over the last few seasons and only similar time was the win by Silvanus off 90 in .19 quicker time n older handicap. With the ease of ornates win I would make this one of the best speedfigures of the season especially when you consider how much you could guesstimate off winning time. The negatives are times on this track, quite often horses winning here don't repeat the form elsewhere and secondly the haggass horses generally obverbet,I wasn't going to add anymore to follows with all the night racing as so busy but this was so impressive and on the clock with potential to get underrated had to spend 5 mins on here and give him a mention. The 2yr old form is in general seems to be getting let down ,i think he could be one of the newer ones to take them on and hopefully some decent prices,i wouldn't be surprised if the handicappers generous he might just pop up in a nursery before going onto group races..

Flying childers 8/1 ppower

Ws disappointing last time out in a listed race looked one paced pn ground that might've been a little dead, the time will always stay prominent from his run at ripon though backed up by older horse handicaps run there as above suggests at least on fast ground he is a group horse his current mark is 99 has a stone to find with gutaifan, rock solid form as does the second fav bear cheek. The interesting this is haggas could have entered Ajaya already run against gutaifan and just touched of,besharah recent winner at York or even the 3rd to ajaya in the group 2 on same day as ornate raucous but has stuck with the obviously very talented ornate. The ground will be quick on Friday already starting to see that on the clock, infact I can see some watering after racing on Friday as the times will be well below standard, ornates win was on similar ground which may suit better and also drawn in 6,the standside rail will be essential as the ground gets quicker on the straight course with stalls there. He may not beat the two favs but I at least expect big improvement on last run and the 8/1 looks a bit of value to me,knowing he will be on ground he recorded that very good time, some of the other runners including fav and second fav although they have won on decent ground they havn't yet won on very quick ground, plus favs drawn in 3 which could make all the difference the way the track is riding...

7/1 now with ppower victor sportsbook 888sportsbook think it's a certainty segal or taylor or both will put this up,just seems logical value although if the 7/1 goes then they may leave it,doesn't look as though books are going to be any bigger though..

8/1 betway..

A decent maiden looking at the time, only a second slower than the class 3 won by kakatosi later on the card rated 84 the 2yr olds carried 6 pound more as well so even more eyecatching and with the 4th,5th,6th,7th only 2 3/4ls behind the first three with potential to improve past the first three there could well be some top class runners to come in runners behind and more importantly some nice value for betting.Hopefully these runners will run in maidens and you could be getting 3-4/1 for horses that are potentially 90 horses and with them being 4th,5th,6th and 7th that's very likely, hopefully will be able to keep track of these as season closes as winning maidens should be a formality.Similarly if they get chucked in something better, the likelihood is they will be overpriced anyway and with the 2yr old form looking fairly mediocre in general conditions races or listed races they could be massively overpriced...

Priceless 3/1 victor lads

She takes big step up in class tomorrow into a group 3,she's only worth a small bet as the 3/1 is quite short and with other unexposed runners the negative could be the ground as currently riding good on straight track and the way she won previously on soft ground and with exceed and excel never winning on anything faster than good.Tomorrow the ground will be nearer gd/gfm the class 2 only slow by .91 so times will be near standard in the sprints tomorrow if not below...

Hawkeyethenoo 28/1 hills silver cup

With the ground conspiring against jack dexter yet again I put on here weeks back the ground being very similar to last years when finished 8th from poor draw I could still see him running well but winning on that ground is now asking a lot although I think his form this season has looked best ever, think I will still give him another chance next year even at 7 he will still look competitive. That race now looks impossible with faster ground and reflected in betting no value and draw could come up either side, think the ground will be fractionally slower than last years so gives the good/gdfm ground horses a chance as well looks complete guessing game.
The silver cup goldie has hawketyethenoo out as well again, last year 11th in the gold cup, even at 9 retains lots of ability a 3rd to speculative bid and licoln in big ascot handicap this season shows he can still compete in these races, the mark of 91 is now lowest mark since july 2010,he looks to have an ew squeak at a big price 2 runs back travelled really well on champions day at ascot over 5fs finishing 4th off 93 in this grade just needing extra furlong. There looks loads of pace over the far side, hilly biilyboy, kimberella,an saighduir led gold cup last year till furlong pole so there must be a fair chance the winner coming from far side.Hilly billyboy two days ago I really liked have him on to follows and he still looksto be improving, recent 3rd to Richard Pankhurst splitting dark emerald 108 and make up 104,make ups slaughtered zarwaan since as well he will be up with the three mentioned similar to jack dexter no luck with ground he may hit the frame but looks to have gone against him.As there's so much pace over there, hawkeyethenoo should be in a decent position,if those 3 take each other on as looks very likely it could tur nout the farside wil be favoured and he may out run his price on ground which will be operfect for him..

Those 3 sprints over the 3 days are great examples of why higher grade handicaps represebnt little value unless you have some sort of edge in ground or draws, the most bizarre thing being the bronze cup being the fastest of the 3 races over the two days on slower ground. And even more eye catchingly the run of new bidder 3rd in the bronze cup in the quickest of the three races suggests that 60+ plus jocks trainers etc,are absolutely clueless as regards ground because obviously that must've been the best place to race, new bidder wouldv';e been 3rd in the silver cup and 6th in the gold cup and only three horses raced there it's absolutely irrefutable that there was a huge advantage standside!!!

Dunno, Giggs; Mick Easterby said he'd walked the course 3 times, and couldn't find any difference anywhere across the course?
New Bidder almost certainly ran the race of his life, and was the only horse (from the 7 that raced stand side over the week at this trip) not to finish out the back of his field.

I've never listened to a trainer or jockey in 20 years as far as ground or draws go as they are generally clueless,it was another example of the lemmings following one another, there's one thing for sure it wasn't a disadvantage so purely pointless wasting your draw, similarly far side as well

Just been reading the last few pages of this. Really interesting analysis and insight.

Cheers for sharing.

Ps. Been reading a couple of things elsewhere recently about Smash Williams with those commenting saying that they dont think hes got the size and scope to train on next year compared to other 2 year olds in the guineas frame - do you think that holds much weight as the speed and talent he's shown so far is surely already enough to put him in the frame?

I'm a novice, be gentle...

I don't really think a great deal about any of the 2yr olds to be honest,i put air force blue up at 16/1 to win the Coventry a few days after it won its maiden, now 5/1 to win the guineas, smash Williams as I mentioned before to run thiose two races so close together and both in good times he's a group 1 7f horse don't know whether he's a miler but as good as anything seen this season.Think shalaas the interesting one,as has looked the one with most scope yet on the clock still hasn't done a great deal so there's a possibility could still yet be over rated even though you get someone like dettori saying iots one of the best he's ridden, think in general the group races are just cannon fodder for a very small group of horses though so you won't be able to read much intio this seasons results..

Two nice looking maidens on the nass card, havn't really been following the irish cards this season as been doing all the cards over here but just looking briefly through the card today and this maiden although still quite compacted the time was decent only .o6 slower than the older handicapper on the card the progressive katimavik winning off 81 and recent 8th in Cambridgeshire obver there so the maiden time looks rock solid.Hopefully a maiden that will be undervalued with proximity of runners and could be some nice nusery types with two rags in 2nd and 3rd,impossible to assess how good the winner and runner up are but I would be surprised if not 90+ horses so worth checking out this maiden when marks are given. This was the fillies maiden race on the card and was .45 slower slower than following maiden won by a highly progressive winner that looks a likely 100+ horse as well.

Visually and on the clock very impressive winning by .39 quicker than katimavik but doesn't tell the whole story was good for another 4/5ls probably so must be a 100+ horse and a strong possibility of being gropup class, there must be a chance of getting underestimated betting wise as well as only looked a weak maiden on paper and had only a dundalk maiden run behind him.Looks a really interesting runner with ground like this for next couple of months and new revised mark will be very interesting,a listed race should be a formality from whats run this year and what I've seen on the clock...The biggest problem will be keeping track of it all..

Trending

Jeremy gasks had a nightmare season but two winners in the last week so hit some form then today trending bad or deliberately bad ride dropped out so no chance from the break then no effort evenh though on bridle for last 2fs doesn't really matter as trending had looked in good form running well in the greys race at Newmarket should've been totally outclassed but ran well, that was after being runner up to picansort at brighton and alsio a decent run behind edged out in yet another race for horses rated up to 75 at barh. He's obviously thoroughly exposed but appears to be in really good form and at least short term no reason why he can't pop up at decent price in a low grade race on the form he's showing on recent runs off a mark of 59 ..
