Dante Meeting.

A good or a poor Dante. Watched the race again twice and not sure. Front two look to be far ahead of the rest. Deauville ran a cracker on his first run since the racing post trophy. Think he will be the best of the field but will he be good enough to win the derby. We shall see.

Doubt Deauville's even the best of AoB's, certainly couldn't see him beating the winner anytime soon.
Wings Of Desire's weakness might just be lack of a gearchange; may be inexperience, but he was bumped along at various stages today, and performed similarly over the full 12f at Wolver.

Hard to call Edinahib but Gosden amazing the way he is willing to use Wolverhampton for horses of this quality.
Three runs in 30 days with Derby just 24 days away is a big ask for any horse; will it be too much ?
Deauville bound to improve with Ryan looking around him early for cover or company ?
Third horse a tad unlucky but stamina not his forte.
For a large enough field a lot of the runners pulled and generally ran green including the favourite who was "coltish " pre race, though that did not unduly concern Ml Stoute.
APOB showing the pressure in C4 interview as he seems to have aged considerably since last Sunday to my eyes, believe it or not.
Turret Rocks / Moonlight Magic ew double still the value to me !

Mediocre card by York's normal high standard, imo. Best bet for me is Teresar in the first.
Went off too quick in a g/s Newmarket gp3 last backend, and should be much better suited by today's faster ground and easier track. Gets into this off the absolute ceiling for the race, and Henry Candy does well at the track with the few runners he sends.
General 8/1 looks inviting.

I was thinking it was more likely that AOB is still sore over the Nick Luck interview after the Chester Vase.

Nick was certainly pushing his luck at Chester. Doesnt help when he asks all the wrong questions. He could of just asked who was likely to run in the Derby. Asking what the pecking order was is a waste of time as aiden isn't likely to tell him. They were hopeful on Deauville’s run and probably very pleased with it being the horses first run for a while. I can see aiden running the two from Chester, deauville and shogun and possibly the ghurka depending how he runs on Sunday.

My previous post seems to have disappeared.

bet of the day is Master Blue Eyes. Loads of money down and fortunately I got on this morning. Expect a slight drift unless every man and his dog follow suit. Campaigned at 8f in 3 maidens last year, upped in trip for handicap debut. Out of mastercrastman, no surprise to see the money down given the stamina and also improvement from 2-3-4 with these horses. Trainer likes these handicaps so expecting a big run 2 pts each way.

Taking a punt on Dhaben in the first. On the face of it looked highly tried in it's first year before winning an ordinary maiden. However back in third was a horse that is now rated 100 on the all weather. Come back run over 6f on good to soft - Dhaben showed good speed before stopping dead at the 5f mark and finishing last. Dropped in trip and looks a great price. 1pt each way.

Also like Czabo and flying officer. In the listed fillies I'm taking a chance on Twizzell - will include these three in multiples with the above for extra interest.

Good luck all.

Very enjoyable day at York yesterday. Beautiful weather, a very good midweek crowd, top-class racing at a splendid racecourse although the traffic system still leaves plenty to be desired - it took me 38 minutes to travel the first 38 miles and an hour for the last 4.

Boater looks a straightforward bet to me today in the 2-y-o event. She was very impressive first time out and has a good stall this afternoon.

I also like Oasis Fantasy on the card. He pulled hard at Newmarket but still won decisively. That's not a trait he normally exhibits and if he settles today he's a fair price to defy this penalty. He's plenty of decent form off this sort of mark.

Changing the subject slightly (and I appreciate that this amounts to top-class aftertiming) but I actually typed out a lengthy post on this thread yesterday morning putting up Midterm and (believe it or believe it not) Duke Of Firenze - at 16s! - as my two main bets at York and giving reasons. As often happens, it took longer than I had expected and by the time I "sent" it I'd been logged out of the site. I logged back in and couldn't then retrieve it using the "autosave" function. Sometimes, I have been able to use autosave but often it's only saved half the content but, as I say, I couldn't even do that yesterday.

Am I the only one who suffers this problem? If I know a post will be lengthy I use the "local notes" facility on my I-Pad and copy and paste to this site but sometimes, as stated, a simple post becomes longer than anticipated. It seems to me you're not given long enough to make a post before you're kicked off. Or is it something to do with my own settings?

Happens to me too Gus and I do the same re the copy and paste.

Well done with Duke of Firenze. I fancy him to defy any reasonable increase in the Dash and the 10/1 looks generous for a previous winner who seems back on his game and likely to be able to run off a marginally lower mark than his 2013 winning one.

I like Richard Guest's horse in the first and Dusky Dawn later in the day for Alan Swinbank. I need winners today.

Great week for me, 12-1 weds and 10-1 today to finish off with! Love York meetings.

I'm not sure if they showed it on Channel 4 yesterday but Midterm was wearing some sort of protective plastic looking shoes on his front feet in the pre parade ring. He was very coltish in the pre parade so they took him off into a box to calm him down and get him saddled. I've never seen that sort of footwear in the parade or pre parade before. Black Sea was also very coltish in the pre parade and was absolutely awash with sweat. I had Journey, Midterm and Easton Angel yesterday, first 2 were both disappointing. Added Always Smile later on and The Cashel Man, so close in the last race but was on to win.

Thesme will be winning again soon enough, decent run in 3rd in the first race. Oasis Fantasy did well today from the back of the field and that form there with Barsanti could be decent, both worth keeping an eye on. I wasn't sure if De Sousa had just come out of the stalls poorly or was quite happy to just drop in behind. I backed Czabo and was hoping for a decent run but thought she was disappointing today.

Which way did you travel there? We went M1 then A64 but set off fairly early and got parked up near the Holiday Inn, just up from the 10f start. I always avoid going into York or to the racecourse parking, has taken me over an hour to get out before. There is a pub called the Fox and Roman (think it's Tadcaster Rd) and you can park near there. There's a chippy and a sandwich shop and after racing it takes about 5-10 mins and you're back on the A64. Much easier than queuing for ages in traffic.

I was pleased he pressed AOB the way he did. Not enough people do so. It doesn't matter to me that AOB ducked the questions. One day a trainer will be caught out and reveal more than he wanted.

You do have to wonder about Gosden, though. I'm his biggest fan but last year he could have picked up a string of valuable handicaps with Jack Hobbs and his Derby bid fell in a hole. This year he runs Wings Of Desire off 88 in the Dante when the 3yo hcap at the Derby meeting followed by the KGV at Ascot then maybe the Irish Derby would have given him the route to pick up big money en route without breaking sweat.

No more Glenfiddich for you. I'd take finishing 2nd in the Derby (with a decent chance beforehand of winning it) over winning any number of handicaps. The Irish Derby is a nothing race these days.

Matt Chapman got a lot more information out of Aidan O'Brien last Sunday by being civil and tactful, than Nick Luck did by being aggressive and tactless (and yes, Chapman managed to be tactful).

Aiden does seem to be much more accommodating to atr and Matt c in particular. Luck and a few others could learn that just by making someone feel awkward ain't going to lead to any decent info. What aiden did say that he was happy with most of the trials. The vibe from ballydoyle is that they are most pleased with deauville and us army ranger and that port Douglas surprised them with how well he ran. As usual in the run up to the derby the jockey bookings for the coolmore mob should be fascinating. From aobs body language I'd say he was sweetest on Deauville but expecting us army ranger to be a much better horse come Derby day.

I though it was particularly interesting that he said that he was approaching the trials differently this year, more of a softly softly approach. But it's clear that he regards USAR as far superior to the others, it's just a case of him being such a baby still.

Reminds me of what Sir Mark Prescott said about running Pivotal in King Stand stakes , his debut 3yo run.
*The owners wanted a stallion prospect so he went to Ascot; pity because there was a valuable 3yo sprint handicap the previous weekend at York and he was so well in at the weights he would have dotted up !"

Aidan has to guide his horses to maximise their potential stallion earnings; Ruler Of The World won The Derby on his third start but looked and ran like a wet rag at The Curragh and did not live up to expectations despite some cracking good runs after.
Standing at 10K, "The Best Value Stallion at stud in Europe " ( Coolmore Marketing) must grate with "the lads".

Tom segal also thinks deauville will beat wings of desire at Epsom so not just me thinking it. Thought deauville didn't look fully wound up at York. We shall see.

Interesting with the differing views.
I came away thinking Deauville ran a nice race. 12s looks a fair price to me.

Gutted the Gosden filly misses the Oaks.
