Derby. Epsom (no road)

just checked hawk wings record, against the derby winner, that derby horse has much better record, double the group 1 wins and three times more prize money.
dont know those horses, i can see hawk wing has an inflated RPR rating, must
of got that rating after win of 11 lengths, done nothing much after that derby.
winner travelled allover the world and won group 1's. i will take your word for it hawk wing was the better horse.

There are good reasons for those superior horses being beaten by their inferiors, trip, precocity , luck in running, the course etc.

Having watched the race a few times now, a few observations.

DA bolted pretty much straight away, no dastardly Ballydoyle plan required.
Libertarian fell down the hill and is a model for the Ledger
Off a slow pace Rulers acceleration was electric, he stays well but may be better off a fast run 1m2f.

There was a dastardly Ballydoyle plot, alright, though it had nothing to do with thwarting Dawn Approach ( a misguided view first promoted by Graham Cunningham on CH4). DA had no history of 'tanking' previously, the jockeys on the 2 Coolmore horses leading after the first furlong could have no possible way of knowing how he was performing behind them, and slowing the pace down was more likely to favour DA's questionable stamina anyway.
That Ballydoyle went in mob-handed with the deliberate intention of insuring the race was slowly run was plain for all to see, but that was in the interests of their own main hope, Battle Of Marengo, whom connections had expressed their own stamina doubts about, prior to the race. Might well have pulled it off too, had DA not increased the pace by carting Kevin Manning to the front so early.
A totally unsatisfactory race imo, with a questionable result overall, and the 'Mafia' proving once again that their business will always take precedence over our sport.

The turn of foot Libertarian showed to get into the position that he did suggests he's no mere sluggard. He's not in the Irish Derby, but connections must surely think about supplementing him for that.

As Steve Cauthen so ably demonstrated in the Derby - if you don't like the slow gallop make your own running.

Picked him out as good St Leger type earlier this season. Has a fair turn of foot as well as stamina attributes. The Irish Derby would make sense.

Very possibly. The winner did not gain or participate in that. Battle of M doesn't look a great stayer

Libertarian may always catch the eye running on over that trip at the top level. He needs longer to be at his best.

On a different note, Bolgers genetics company said DA couldn't stay so the day wasn't a complete loss for him. Pity Sheikh Mo is too important to listen to anyone.
