Derby. Epsom (no road)

the sprint race time ties in with the first race time and makes the ground about 5lb slower than middle Good

nearly perfect Good ground..won't suit those that like to hear their feet rattle

lay in the win market of the fav wasn't taken up, but managed to get a small lay on him in the place market. Pity never smashed into himwith the likelyhood he was never going to stay that far.

That was extremely upsetting watching DA straining and fighting like that partly pocket talk I suppose but it was not pleasant to see a beauty like that struggling and then tailing off. I doubt he would have ever run in the race if Sheik Mo hadn't bought him.

My feelings too - such a shame to see such a lovely horse run like that. I felt for Kevin Manning too - he had an impossible task trying to get him to settle with the others all slowing it down - tactics by Ballydoyle worked.

They slowed it down as they thought Battle Of Marengo a doubtful stayer!!!!!!!
Pacemakers are quasi-legitimate anyway, but to use them to spoil the pace as Coolmore do ought to be banned completely.
Oddly enough, as when they tried to fix George Washington's Eclipse run, Ryan Moore became the main beneficiary.

But so much for all the pre-race tosh about Ballydoyle's runners taking it in turns to force a very strong pace to expose the stamina limitations of Dawn Approach.

DA was lit up from the start. The best horse won.
The third tier trainer did a good job with the 2nd horse.

She's still a 3rd tier trainer; and after over half-a-century of trying, still none have done the Derby/Dante double.:p
The way the race was run, the form's probably not worth a hatful of crabs, anyway.

Bet Tom Segal is smiling, He tipped up the winner at 33s before he won at Chester and Galileo Rock was his pricewise horse today.

I wouldn't be rushing to back the winner for the Arc if the sectional data is any guide.

In a race where overall time tells you nothing due to the slow early pace...its the last 3.5f split that tells a story...once balanced with the early pace.

I'll try and highlight what i mean.

Firstly the pace was very slow as you could see anyway.

when the track speed is removed from the times to give a comparison with previous runs...this race makes a very interesting comparison with Sea The Stars win....in very similar pace scenario. The track speed was actually near identical with no need to adjust STS time and only a slight adjustment to todays.

Sea The Stars
start to 7f marker =73.5
7f to 3.5f out = 44.7
3.5f to finish 38.54

Ruler Of The World
start to 7f marker =73.7
7f to 3.5f out = 45.9
3.5f to finish 39.1

basically ROTW has saved energy early and so should be able to beat STS's last sectional to equal the rating STS got for his Derby win..but even though running a length and a half slower to 7 out...+ 7 lengths slower in the mid section...he still runs the last section 3+ lengths slower than STS.

so ROTW had saved 8+ lengths on STS to 3 out he has still run 3+ slower just in the last section...this would have put him well back in STS's Derby

lets say he had run alongside STS to 3.5 out he would then have finished a lot more than 3+ lengths behind STS as the extra energy needed to run 8+ faster would have slowed him later.

imo this could be a very below par winner

I think that's right. It was notable from the aerial view that the relative positions of the front five were relatively constant in the last few furlongs until the final few yards. Nothing was going notably better than the others until the final lunge for the line, when Libertarian did well. I don't think there's much between any of them.

It will be interesting to see whether Magician runs at the Curragh.
