Lots of cold, flu, virus etc stuff flying around, so time I started dispensing advice (usual disclaimer - I am not actually a real Doctor and don't have the first idea what I'm talking about).

Best decongestants IMO are King Prawn Pathia with pilau rice, chicken madras with chapatis if you don't like seafood, and if you're a vegetarian you have to fend for yourself - tofu vindaloo maybe? If such a thing even exists?

If you want a second opinion, I recommend Doctor walsworth.

Wrap up well - double thermal vests and leggings, lumberjack shirt, thin cashmere jumper under thick Sea Island jumper, moon boots, bobble hat and Dr Who scarf - and go to Taunton and back French Ship in the 12:45 tomorrow. Cheer him home, celebrate with two hot toddies and all your colds/ flu etc will vanish. There! Satisfied both sides, social and racing.

I've had three courses of antibiotics in the last five weeks. Still coughing.

X-rays etc all clear and have been assured there is nothing sinister going on.

A couple more down-to-earth remedies to try: Covonia (tends to help a bit, esp if mixed with hot water) and, on Orchidette's recommendation, Vicks to the soles of the feet when going to bed at night.

Good luck all with your ailments.

Talking my language - six layers here and always dressed in the style of Patrick Troughton.

I've heard it said that if you take stuff for a heavy cold it will clear up in a fortnight and if you don't take anything it will clear up in two weeks.

Sometimes prolonged coughing is a result of a post nasal drip ( that most glamorous of afflictions) and things like Beconase or saline nasal sprays can help. I once had a cough that lasted for what seemed like months. It exhausted me. I didn’t miss a day of work though. My boss, who just happened to be my doctor too, was as much good as a chocolate teapot. He said if I eventually collapsed he’d just step over me. I did try the Vicks on the feet thing: I think it helped. Also bought some cherry brandy which is supposed to be good for the bronchial tract. But it was very expensive and, although I rarely drink alcohol, if I have something sweet tasting like a liqueur I tend to find it a bit more’ish and just knock it back in huge quantities. The Baileys we bought for Christmas, didn’t last long.
