Apologies in advance but I reckoned if I put this in the chit-chat section it might disappear down a black hole.

I've received an invitation to attend the future son-in-law's stag do in Dublin next month and was wondering if anyone had any tips/hacks re securing half-decent (or even half-indecent) accommodation around the city centre.

I know Wetherspoons now have two hotels there and will check them out but a little other local knowledge will always help.

Hi DO hope you have a great time in Dublin.
Not sure about accommodation, but 2 days ago an article in the Daily mirror claimed that the Temple Bar in Dublin charged a customer 107 euros for
1 pint Heineken
2 malibus
1 coke
6 baby guiness(shots)
Staggering!
Hopefully you'll find a few winners to finance your stay👍🏻

This better not impact on your contributions to my Big-Race threads!

I don't actually recall giving you permission to do this, Maurice!

Apart from the occasional sortie into the no-doubt extensive Maurice garden acreage to urinate on any itinerant garden waste that is refusing to compost, I expect you to be indoors studying the form!

The Saturday form is usually done and dusted by mid Thursday evening but that weekend is the week after the Guineas and I don't think there are any particularly big races on.

And there's no way I would urinate in my own garden. I have a gardener to do that for me.

Dunno about Dublin, but I’m feeling as if I’m in a back to front universe at the moment. Annual Madeira pilgrimage chasing the sun, but we’ve left the sun at home and landed to an English April here in Madeira. Can’t even have a bet - someone said turn off bookies apps and internet then go to their site via mobile data?

€200 seems to be the going rate in the city centre and environs for a room on a Saturday night, whether it’s a single, twin or double. In this price range the Mespil, Gibson and Sandymount Hotels would be reasonable choices.

By the way there’s a meeting in Leopardstown that Sunday. Easy enough to get to and connected to the airport by an Aircoach service.

Ryanair (spit) is looking like my best option for travel so can I ask seasoned Ryanair travellers for any tips re avoiding crazy surcharges?

It must be over 20 years since I last flew with them and I know they've got a lot worse for that kind of thing and I'm not comfortable relying on my mobile phone for this kind of stuff.

(My daughter is the kind of person who turns up at the airport with a wee bag slung over her shoulder and her phone in her pocket and whizzes through everywhere but she avoids Ryanair as if she can. She's more of an Aer Lingus type.)

Thanks in advance.

Just make sure your cabin bag is completely under the size limit including wheels as there have been a lot of stories recently that they are charging for about 1mm over!

Make sure to check in well in advance, preferably at least a couple of days beforehand. Make sure when checking in that the details of your travel document are accurately given. You will get an email with your boarding pass as an attachment. Either print it out, download it to your Apple wallet or equivalent or, if you’re confident you will be able to access your emails at the airport, just open the attachment and scan it when you reach the boarding gate.

Tried to do all that and thought I was doing fine until it wanted to verify my ID (new to Ryanair site) but keep getting a message saying 'can't access your camera even though I went into my settings and allowed access.

Tried going via my mobile phone but the page just froze.

Aer Lingus poses a whole new ball game since it doesn't do the return Sunday flight.

I might need to try going by bus to Belfast then the train.

Anyone got any experience of bus/train travel Belfast-Dublin? It doesn't look too expensive and the bus Glasgow-Belfast return fare isn't bad because I'm only paying for the crossing. It will just take a whole lot longer, giving me less time in Dublin.

The train service is very good between Belfast and Dublin, the Enterprise takes about 2 hours and fares are just over £20 first class - return trip from Dublin is about 20% cheaper. Its also a pretty relaxing journey.
I've down a few trips into Dublin this way and its easy enough to get anywhere in the city from Heuston station.

Perfectly adequate hotels near Heuston station would be:
Budget - Phoenix Park Hotel
Upmarket - Ashling Hotel

Also, Ryan's of Parkgate Street does a fine pint of Guinness and is 5 minutes walk from the station.

These replies are much appreciated guys. Thank you all very much. Orchidette is going to try and help me out today.

The Belfast trains arrive into Connolly Station, not Heuston. That should make someone of your background feel at home, DO.

But seriously, is there no one in your men’s shed or elsewhere who could help you over the Ryanair hurdles?

Possibly, and I'll be there on Monday but ideally I'd like to get this sorted sooner rather than later and I'm not sure how the Shed guys (at least one is a retired computer engineer) are going to help the Ryanair site access my camera.

I don't mind providing my ID for security but everywhere else, including bookies, accepts uploads of photos of my driving licence and/or passport so I have to be suspicious of Ryanair's motives when no other travel company I've ever booked with has ever asked me for anything other than my passport number.

Meantime, I'll message one of the guys to see if they have any ideas on how I can get round it.

Thanks again, Grey.

All booked up.

It turns out there's a budget airline called Emerald Airlines (Aer Lingus) does the Glasgow-Dublin route and the booking was hassle-free with no request for camera access or anything like that.

Flying to Dublin on the afternoon of Fri 8 May, returning to GLA on the afternoon of Sun 10th.

Got a Homestay place near St Patrick's Cathedral.
