Equine Retirements, Long Term Injuries and Departures

Brave Inca’s emotional comeback win in the 2010 Irish Champion Hurdle at the age of 11 was the highlight of the forum’s first GWID (Great Weekend In Dublin). One of Inca’s owners, Oran Crean, used to be a member here, Cantoris, and he had played a big part in organising that weekend. It made for a special moment when Inca flew the last hurdle and won the race for the second time.

Brave Inca was appropriately named, as indeed was his great rival, Hardy Eustace. Together with Harchibald and Macs Joy, they were part of a great era for hurdling.

I don't think we'll ever see a division that good again.

You are possibly correct. And i was a big fan of Brave Inca and he did me a few good turns.
I dont think it is possible to compare eras in any sport although many try to do it with football. But we can all have our favourites and for me, the Night Nurse, Sea Pigeon, Monksfield, Birds Nest (what a bugger he was), Dramatist, Flash Imp etc era is the standout memory for me in the jumping game.

Aaah, memories. :)

Just heard that - very sad and a huge loss. I assume they will now retire Delacroix with immediate effect, to replace him for next season.

Pneumonia was caused by "choke" which is not common. I had it happen to a horse of mine when I fed it hay after a race despite leaving a good two hours after the race. It was at Kempton and he started it on the lorry as we left the stables. I managed to get the lorry turned around and back to the course and we were able to get the vet who had left to come back. He was brilliant and saved my horse's life. Never been so sure I was going to lose a horse though.

What was the farm court case?

Barne Estate farm , near Clonmel
750 + acres of top arable land.
John Magnier claimed he had a "hand shake "agreement with the owners to purchase farm for c15million Euro.
They subsequently sold to Maurice O'Regan ( Newtown Anner Stud) for 22M or so after a bidding war .
Mr Magnier , a farmer at heart, attended High Court sporting a John Deere baseball cap, not unlike the one he doesn't wear when racing.
Anyways he lost his case so has to be content ,for now, with the 176 or so farms he does own.

‘Brilliant son of Iffraaj.’ That’s a shocking piece of writing. He was an ordinary horse who turned out to be a super stallion.
His pedigree is interesting too in that he isn't that well bred on the grand scale of things (only £46k as a yearling). A little bit of black type in there but not enough to get excited about and I notice all his brothers got gelded which tells you everything. Certainly his stallion career has been a surprise even before Coolmore acquired him and sent him their mares which are bred in the purple.

The dam line is very weak. He was a freak stallion.

It is. People do get very obsessed with black type. I rather prefer the Hannon approach of buying on the individual rather than the page.

Last week I went to see a mare and foal as I encouraged the owners to breed from the mare. She's by Midnight Legend and won 9 point to points ending up Wessex Novice champion. She was a real pointer in that her owners were proper amateurs with the son coming down from his job in London to ride her in work or in races at the weekend. He is the first person to admit he wasn't the best. But they did brilliantly and she wasn't an easy horse to deal with (plus she was ground dependent). I think she could have been good enough to run under Rules.

Anyway after she retired I suggested they put her in foal. They deliberated and asked if anyone was interested in breeding from her but there was none. So they put her in foal to a German stallion called Arrigo who I have to say is stunning (he was virtually next door). She had a filly foal on May 15th and it's a cracker. For a first foal she is a really good size and very correct. And a proper ballsy attitude like her mum (I was lucky to get out of the field without being struck at!) which I really like in a filly. They are still considering selling her and the mum (but only to good home) as they are getting on and it's quite difficult to rear a foal at home.

I'm doing the lottery as I type as I'd buy them in a shot.

When I saw it I had to double check if it was old news for some reason ( possibly because I’m locked out of Facebook so haven’t seen anything from his fan club page for a while). Either that or I felt he was a horse that would live forever. One of the best named horses ever. It did say ‘ he went out on his own terms’ but what that way was I don’t know.

He's been an incredible sire the last couple of years and a superb outcross for coolmores huge band of galileo mares. Very sad news and he was producing so many top class horses. I wonder if coolmore will buy into siyouni now. That would seem the logical step for them as relying on delacroix to fill the gap a big ask for a new stallion. They have Paddington, auguste rodin and starspangledbanner as other stallions for the mares. A big blow for coolmore not dissimilar to not having galileo. Let's see what John magnier comes up with.
