Eurovision

I have never seen many groups quite as camp BUT in fairness to them that's exactly why they chose the song. It is quite catchy, they wear horrendous outfits, have a twee dance routine, so bearing in mind our past efforts, why on earth not. We may even get more than nil points this year! They interviewed them on BBC1 this morning, and (thankfully) they are just not taking themselves too seriously.

I saw Lee Trundle at the Swansea football game on Friday night (he is currently off injured) and someone told me his girlfriend was one of the contestants in the Eurovision programme on Saturay night. I think she is the blonde girl (Liz McClarnon ex Atomic Kitten?) who is presumably trying to kickstart a flagging career. I think she may still has a bit of kicking to do. :what:

We won't win, Europe hate us

Greece vote for Cyprus, Cyprus vote for Greece

Denmark vote for Iceland, Iceland vote for Denmark and so on

Indeed DG; I wasn't suggesting for a moment that they'd actually win the thing, but it certainly won't look out of place on the night.

I think it is a fun song that might just do pretty well. It was the best Eurovision song of the lot.

Its absaloutly dreadful and what a total farce announcing the result. Looked totally fixed to me - when old Wogan announced that the French girl had one Scoop were about to celebrate and then looked gobsmacked before Fearne Cotton ammended the result in their favour. Almost as though they knew the result beforehand. Cindi (French girl) was far better - at least she could sing.

I like Ferne Cotton (kind of like a younger, British version of Heather Graham) but she`s getting a bit over-exposed for me.

As for the show, i watched it with the sound off so wouldn`t have a clue.

We'll not win picking credible musicians - Scooch, Jemini etc are the way forward though traditional stuff seems to go down well so maybe a Flip N Fill re-mix of Donald Where's Ya Trousers should be next years entry :)

Agree with you Jinny that Cyndi has an amazing voice but she's not Eurovision material - she can sing but doesn't dance. Hope she brings out an album though, i'd certainly buy it

It's perfect Eurovision fodder, surely?
Exactly - it's terrible Europop - best chance the UK has had of winning in years.

Many Europeans love crass Europop! We may even get at least a couple of votes this year

If you took the word "amazing" out of her vocabulary she wouldn't say a lot  .

I went to Sweden in December and was amazed that the most popular room the nightclub I was in was playing Eurovision songs, from winning entries from the 70's to the also-rans of the 90's. Remember Sonia's entry ? No ? Well they do !

Scooch were evidently accused of not singing live on Saturday night, so they are now on Fern and Phil's Morning show doing just that. They are not bad singing live to be honest and the harmonies are fairly good although I think they need their backing singers again as it did sound a little weak im places. They did have two backing singers on Saturday night, which I understand they were allowed, although they were hidden from view as there was no room on the stage.

I am fascinated by Eurovision. Actually its one of my favourite events to watch each year, and there is only ONE MONTH TO GO!

Its going to be a tough one to call this year. There are some interesting ones, including:

* Cyprus - my outside tip, though I'd rather see them get a top 10 finish, than win it. I presume they'd be 20/1 at the odds to win, but a fair chance of forwarding on into the Finals, with the view of making a top 10 position. I think they can, Evridiki is one of the best singers in the region. She sings Comme ci Comme Ca, an electro euro pop music. This is to be sung in French only at Eurovision.
I think Cyprus needed to improve on their past two attendees, particularly last year's American/Greek singer.

* Albania - the country that definitely needs to improve if they want to be chances in the future. They have gone back to the roots of their music, and have gone with the intriguing Frederik Ndoci, whom I have been told is one of Albania's great perfomers and composers, singing Hear My Plea. Its a bit obscure, but one I like.

* Switzerland - the country that imports its talent, ala Celine Dion (Canada) and most recently Vanilla Ninja (Estonia), went locally this time. And we all should know the artist, DJ BOBO! What a weird song he has pulled out, Vampires Are Alive with a Britney Spears-alike female vocalist, and he, DJ Bobo singing alongside her. Its the freaks version of Harry Met Sally.
Political voting will get it through to the Finals, and DJ BOBO being a known act throughout Europe, and the world.

* Serbia - my favourite of the lot, and the one I am going to tip to win this event. Its the first year Serbia goes into Eurovision as independent country, and the Serbs I believe will pull it off nicely this year. They have chosen their current chart topping artist, Marija Šerifović, to sing Molitva. In English it has been translated as Prayer. The song will be sung in Serbian, and will be backed up by 5 Serbian and Bosnian female singers, including from what I have been told, the 2 girls that backed up Hari Mata Hari of Bosnia & Herzegovina, which came 3rd in 2006.
Inevitably, the border voting will play a huge part in getting Serbia across the line, but I do genuinely believe based on the past two efforts of Hari Mata Hari from Bosnia & Herzegovina in 2006 (3rd) and Željko Joksimović in 2004 (2nd), this could be the Balkans big win.

I am being sarcastic :P That is the whole point of Eurovision, political/country border voting, and idiotic tunes. What is the saying about it being "Ding a dong" etc?

The only talented person that Switzerland ever imported was Celine Dion. On her day a fantastic vocalist, but unlike other ballad singers, such as Whitney Houston, lacks majorly in charisma in her performances.

I thought I'd resurrect this thread, as the Competition is on this coming weekend.

Thoughts anyone on whom should win?
