I am fascinated by Eurovision. Actually its one of my favourite events to watch each year, and there is only ONE MONTH TO GO!
Its going to be a tough one to call this year. There are some interesting ones, including:
* Cyprus - my outside tip, though I'd rather see them get a top 10 finish, than win it. I presume they'd be 20/1 at the odds to win, but a fair chance of forwarding on into the Finals, with the view of making a top 10 position. I think they can, Evridiki is one of the best singers in the region. She sings Comme ci Comme Ca, an electro euro pop music. This is to be sung in French only at Eurovision.
I think Cyprus needed to improve on their past two attendees, particularly last year's American/Greek singer.
* Albania - the country that definitely needs to improve if they want to be chances in the future. They have gone back to the roots of their music, and have gone with the intriguing Frederik Ndoci, whom I have been told is one of Albania's great perfomers and composers, singing Hear My Plea. Its a bit obscure, but one I like.
* Switzerland - the country that imports its talent, ala Celine Dion (Canada) and most recently Vanilla Ninja (Estonia), went locally this time. And we all should know the artist, DJ BOBO! What a weird song he has pulled out, Vampires Are Alive with a Britney Spears-alike female vocalist, and he, DJ Bobo singing alongside her. Its the freaks version of Harry Met Sally.
Political voting will get it through to the Finals, and DJ BOBO being a known act throughout Europe, and the world.
* Serbia - my favourite of the lot, and the one I am going to tip to win this event. Its the first year Serbia goes into Eurovision as independent country, and the Serbs I believe will pull it off nicely this year. They have chosen their current chart topping artist, Marija Šerifović, to sing Molitva. In English it has been translated as Prayer. The song will be sung in Serbian, and will be backed up by 5 Serbian and Bosnian female singers, including from what I have been told, the 2 girls that backed up Hari Mata Hari of Bosnia & Herzegovina, which came 3rd in 2006.
Inevitably, the border voting will play a huge part in getting Serbia across the line, but I do genuinely believe based on the past two efforts of Hari Mata Hari from Bosnia & Herzegovina in 2006 (3rd) and Željko Joksimović in 2004 (2nd), this could be the Balkans big win.
