Famous Name

Are those questioning Questioning's rating questioning the merit of his run behind Twice Over, given that the latter's fitness was in question, and he has twice over beaten in that early Newmarket listed race, the race in question being the Earl of Sefton stakes?

Why is Questioning shorter in the betting than Penitent on their last meeting?

Seems you were right to question this with Penitent confirming form with Questioning. Good call. I had a go at 11/5 on Famous Name, but was beaten a long way out and looks past his best and DG had no answers at all on this going.

They all looked pretty knackered.

It's great when people start threads like this. Right or wrong it makes you think about where you want to be and sheds light on things you may have overlooked. Good effort Slim.

Wouldn't write Famous Name off just yet; Pat Smullen said though he acts on soft, today's ground was totally different. The drift in Dubawi Gold's price was probably down to the Hannons contemplating withdrawing him, and the form's probably not worth a hatful of crabs, going forward.

I think Steve that Famous Name is now a few pounds off his best as a 7yo. Northgate was back in third and despite subsequently winning a handicap at Dundalk (where he's at his best) he holds down the form of the Leopardstown race. I'll be taking Sharestan on when he steps into Grouo company.

I’d advise against that, but if you persist you can take him on with me. True Famous Name has been a few pounds off this season and at seven won’t have many races left in him. But Sharestan is a four year old that has appeared just four times. He was very good at the Curragh and came within a whisker of beating Famous Name at Leopardstown being left just too much to do. He has started on a steep improvement curve and I expect him to be very much up to Group company when stepped up in grade.

17th listed/group success last night but nothing above group 3.

A thoroughly admirable performer but must be a tad frustrating for his owners that he can;t break that ceiling.

Weld commented he must be getting close to a record for wins in stakes races - Anyone know what the UK/Irish record is?

Would it matter now if he won the Group 1 in Germany? Is he not exposed as short of the top level, and potential breeders know what they are getting already??

Depends what you're looking for at the price. The likes of Woodman didn't win past Group 3 level. So a Group 2 or a Group 1 would augment his record well.

Woodman was champion Irish 2yo and was moved on to stud duties after losing his 3yo debut (his 5th race). If he'd stayed in training and picked up a Group 1 somewhere, he would have been "confirming his promise". If Famous Name got lucky in one now, he'd be seen as just that - lucky (although I wouldn't begrudge it for a second).

His sire (Dansili) never won a Group 1 either, though his form behind Kalinisi (St James's Palace) and Giant's Causeway (Sussex) is surely a fair way ahead of Famous Name's Group 1 near-misses.

The Jockey Club second seems a long time ago now.

Edit: maybe not as far as I though, on RPR at least.

Dansili: 126
Famous Name: 123

Dansili would have won the BC Mile if ridden by a normal claimer
he was a better horse than Famous name is
