Festival Preview Nights

Friday's

Triumph
NS - need a horse that stays well which might find Peace & Co out as he can get a bit edgy. He is a big Hargam fan
MC - Liked Hargam; Karazak is still well fancied and he likes Beltor
PH - thinks Top Notch form is not good enough, Hargam is open to more improvement; Beltor might need a flatter track.
PN - Hargam on the drying ground - he has Old Guard in who will definitely like the better ground.
DP - agreed about Beltor on a flatter track - his Stars over the Sea could run well at a big price.

Albert Bartlett
They all liked Black Hercules
MC - likes Value at Risk 3m will suit him but says wide open race
AP likes Blaklion but there is conflicting info from NTD stable about him
PN - no runner but likes Thomas Brown
PH - Black Hercules is one of Mullins' best
DP - like Tea For Two
NS - Fletchers Flyer

Gold Cup
PN - This is Conti's year! Last year he was suffering from ulcers. He is much stronger and happier. Track not a problem. Pretty bullish about him.
PH - Conti best horse in training in Eng/Ire. C Lough not good enough, Lord Windermere better on soft and it won't be soft enough for Many Clouds.
DP - Conti one to beat. Likes C Lough.
AP - talked to Barry G about Bob's Worth and he said he hated the ground he has encountered this year - is a lively e/w price considering record here.
MC - most competitive GC in years. best backed is Djakadam who they reckon was only about 80% last time.
PN - says Sam Winner is a lively outsider.
AP - doubted Road to Riches stamina
MC - e/w Sam Winner

Hcps
PH - Cheltenian in really good form at home goes in County Hdle
DP - will have Vieux Lion Rouge & Unique De Cotte in the MCP race - think he preferred latter.
PN - Le Mercurey form is looking better and horse is improving. He has Solar Impulse in the G Annual but feels he is high in hcp.
NS - AP will win the last!!

Other horses mentioned positively - The Game Changer in the Coral Cup, Violent Dance in the County Hdle

Best bets Friday
MC - Value at Risk
NS - Hargam
PH - Hargam
PN - Current Event (Foxhunters)
DP - Bob's Moore

Charity Bets
MC - Val Salino
NS - Faugheen
PH - Wait For Me
PN - Faugheen
DP - Kings Palace
AP - Annie Power

Only bits I got about Thursday were Big Easy in the Pertemps is well fancied & Lt Colonel & Whisper e/w in World Hdle.

Have to say I really enjoyed the evening - not nearly as much of a headless chicken as I thought I would be! Alice was brilliant and just kept things rolling (the only thing that threw me was her continuing through intended interval which made things tricky as I had to hunt down the ladies who had sold raffle tickets so I could draw them). She is a lovely person when you get to meet her and all the reports I have had back were that she made the evening.
Whole event sold out a week beforehand so I am really pleased and I think its something to continue. Taunton Racecourse were certainly happy about it!

Well done Jinny. Cracking panel as well.

Thank you all - it was a great panel and that was all down to Philip Hobbs who is the nicest most helpful person you could meet! AS I mentioned earlier the Evening was to raise money for the ailing point to point I run (and am determined to make a huge success!) Philip is on the committee with me so as soon as he saw I was determined to do this, he said he would get the best panel available and he didn't let me down. His assistant Johnson White, booked Alice when she went down to do the King George piece. And Gamla Stan on here, very kindly put me in touch with Luke Tarr of Star Sports who sponsored the entire evening allowing me to spend on advertising, paying for PA system etc. This made a huge difference and I could not have done it without their generosity.

I tend to thrive on organising things - the more complicated the better! And if someone says "Oh no that won't work, its impossible" Its like a red rag to a bull as I am determined to show it can be done. Last year I ran the point to point on the Saturday followed on the Sunday by my parents' surprise 50th Wedding Anniversary lunch for 55 people the following day - I put up the marquee, painted the décor, hung bunting, sorted the flowers etc. (I was a bit knackered by Monday though!)

Don't think these come under this topic exactly, but was the closest I could find so they can go here

Just back from the Festival Preview at the racecourse, absolutely heaving, record crowd no doubt because AP was on the panel.

One thing sticks in my mind

Alan Lee to A P "If you were in Ruby's shoes and had to make the decision whether you would ride Faugheen or Hurricane Fly would you have made the same decision ?"

AP "Not exactly"

Good night wasn't it DG. Ladbrokes enhanced odds on all the favourites, maximum £50 but with the amount of punters at the Centaur, you could in fact go up several times with the same bet!!!!

Yes it gets slicker every year tiggs

Just remembered another AP quote

"If someone had said to me last year I'd be riding Mr Mole in next year's Champion Chase I'd have retired back then"
