Flat Threads

Can just about cope with English and Irish Derby days, Royal Ascot, Glorious Goodwood and the Arc weekend but the rest of it is pap for me. A lot of alternatives to be excited about though, a test series for The Ashes, Wimbledon, Tour De France, British Grand Prix, British Open, all the hype at the start of the new football season and before you know it summer's over and thoughts turn to October and the beginning of better class NH racing beginning with the Showcase Meeting at Cheltenham.

Guineas weekend, dante, eclipse, king george & QE,ebor festival, doncaster and ayr festivals.Along with all those other sporting events you mention of which The ashes and The open is my favourite, personally its an all year round feast for me.

Im ok with the flat but a couple of things...

My least favourite racing sits there like a turd in a swimming pool on just about every card...sprint handicaps. Cant stand them. it serves to dilute the overall appeal. Rather like a pretty attractive lady who has two wooden legs

On original point it is a bit rating orientated the debate here (well not a bit..a lot) and reading moans that Nashwan or something was rated 2lbs too high does lead me to wonder if the response should a link to a dating site, x hamster or Samaritans

I reckon you are a closet stopwatcher Clive;)

It's all about Novice and graded races over jumps and maidens and group racing on the flat.

I just like to see the best take each other on and enjoy trying to spot talent early.

Love em both. I go and watch the flat more live though, mostly cos I prefer not to freeze my bollocks off all winter!

I gradually lost my passion for the jumps, when I went soft feeling pity for low grade chasers struggling to walk, never mind jump a fence.

The fact that my cash was on most of them was an added factor.

As for watching the Flat, I would rather shovel sh*t endlessly up and down Kabul High St, whilst being whipped by the Taliban and wearing a 'Please drone my ass' t-shirt, than watch a Flat race.

How anyone who follows F1 racing can decry flat racing is beyond me. I tried to get excited about F1 racing by following some of your bets last year, and you got me out well ahead, but it was about as pointless as giving shock treatment to a headless corpse.

Grey. Why did you try? Isnt it like putting your hand down an unflushed toilet ? You dont have to try it to know

The thrill of racing for me, is watching your horse coming round the final bend, jockey sat with double handfuls, giving it a little squeeze and it settling the race with a devastating turn of foot. Smashing home to the opposition its vast superiority. Effortlessly crossing the finish line, still pulling away from its rivals without seeming to break sweat. True thoroughbred brilliance.

In flat racing, to do that, you have to be the best horse in the race. Sport at it's purest.

It can happen in jump racing too...

...it just takes a little longer to get to the last bend.
...unless a better rival has fallen at a man made obstacle
...and the turn of foot isn't quite as spectacular
...and it is probably raining.

I'm surprised Flatties don't like F1, given the purpose of both is to go round in a circle as fast as possible, and bugger-all else.
