Flatties to follow 2024

Running Lion looked a real threat until Oisin went for a gap that was closing on him, from that point she was eased considerably and is better than the result suggests.
Dunno about that, reet. Way I saw it was that she got through the gap and maybe just got her her nose in front, but couldn’t go through with it and faded away ‘til Oisin called quits and took his foot off the pedal. Bit like Emily Upjohn.

Perhaps not, just seen that Oisin reported that he didn’t get a clear run in the closing stages. :)

Latest win at Southwell in January. Fourth of 5 in handicap at Hamilton (6f, good, 11/4) 19 days ago, outpaced final 1f. Has fallen 2 lb below last winning mark ahead of this at least.

Took his form up a notch when winning 8-runner minor event at Wolverhampton (6.1f) 37 days ago. Makes handicap debut with more to offer, especially stepped up to 7f. Big player.

Much improved to get off the mark in 8-runner handicap at Ripon (6f, soft) 7 days ago. Scored comfortably there so big shout under a 6 lb penalty.

Fairly useful colt. Remains a maiden after 9 Flat runs. 5/1, good second of 9 in handicap at Sandown (8f, soft) 15 days ago, doing well given he took time to settle with no cover early. The one to beat on form.

Couple of recent eyecatchers who went in my tracker. Mono River a Haggas 3yo who was runner-up in a Doncaster handicap at the end of May and Island Star a Varian 4yo who was on this list last year iirc. Ran well at Windsor recently.

Result: EBT'S GUARD, - WON 4/7F - runner-up in a Class 4 handicap at Sandown last time, appreciated this much easier assignment, breaking the maiden at the tenth attempt. He was full value for the winning margin, but will face stiffer tasks (from 4lb higher) once reintroduced to handicapping.RP

Perfect Part just won on debut at a huge price (2.05 Beverley) But Brian Ellison certainly wasn’t tilting at windmills and she knew her job. It’s not the easiest course to handle and she did well to weave her way through. This could be a nice filly.

Shareholder another debutant winning at Beverley who could now head to Ascot. Slowly away he gutsed it out against a former course winner so a fair performance. And he’s with Karl Burke.

Sea Theme bit of condition in the paddock kept on to take fourth, back her next time. Haycock 3.00
Like the winner too, Queen of the Pride keep on right side of her.

Queen Of The Pride

Expect more improvement on he next outing (possibly Lancashire Oaks?)
Ran as green as grass today;Oisin was very complimentary about her and reckons she'll stay further.

Aviation Time 2:05 Beverley. Persistently denied a run and couldn’t get going until half a furlong out when finished strongly to pass seven horses and finish third. Unlucky - would have been a lot closer, at least.

Result:

Hickory - 8th 3/1f - seemingly didn't take to the fitting of cheekpieces.RP (never put into it)

Winner of 1m Yarmouth handicap on reappearance in May. Bit below form fifth of 9 in handicap at this course (1m, soft, 11/4) 22 days ago. Not ideally drawn but the drop back to 7f may suit and interesting that Buick retains the ride.

Ancient Rome I thought was ridden to get beaten in the Wolferton. Top weight first time out this season and Spencer sends him (most unlike him...!). He got tired but didn’t drop out the back. Hopefully he will go back to Goodwood for a repeat of last year when he made a nice amount for my betfair account!

Result:

ISRAR - WON 11/4 - hasn't always looked the easiest but his Group 2 Chester second to Passenger, who would have been a major player in Wednesday's Prince of Wales's Stakes, stood out at this level and he won as he liked on his favoured ground in a race run to suit his strong-travelling style. He won last season's Princess of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket and will presumably be pointed towards that race again next month.RP

Kempton debut winner and unlucky third in the Hilary Needler at Beverley since, losing all winning chance when short of room and shuffled back approaching the final 1f, keeping on well in the closing stages. Definitely more to come.

Off 15 months after her debut but proved herself a useful prospect when winning at Newcastle in January. Took a step forward returned to turf when second of 6 in handicap at Redcar (10f, soft) and subsequent Newmarket run back over 1m confirms she's in good heart.

Novice/listed winner who ran right up to form fitted with a tongue tie when a keeping-on third of 10 in a C&D handicap last month. Same mark here but needs to raise her game in this deeper race.

Useful last season and she looked all over the winner before hanging left over 1f out when runner-up on return in Dahlia Stakes (9f) at Newmarket in May. Subsequent effort in Princess Elizabeth Stakes has to go down as disappointing and she needs treating with a degree of caution now.

Three recent eye catchers:
Frankelian. Beckett 3yo filly who will improve for trips in excess of 10f

Native King. Won at Chester last week in eye catching fashion.

Moyola. Impressive at Hamilton last week in a time that compared well with the same race for older horses later in the card. He's only gone up 6lbs should have been more and is entered up at Ripon this evening but I think the g/f was the key at Hamilton and it's soft at the Yorkshire track. Won't back, hope he runs moderate.

Results:

Aviation Time - 3rd 28/1 - the only filly in the race, backed up her unlucky third in the Hilary Needler Trophy at Beverley 11 days earlier, keeping on well without having the gears to seriously challenge. She won over 6f on her debut at Kempton and will likely benefit from going back up in trip.RP

Hopeful - 2nd 13/2 - not beaten far from this mark at Newmarket, travelled well and readily pulled clear with the winner, just unable to hold on. She's yet to win a handicap but is clearly progressing.RP

Mystical Pearl - 21st 40/1 - Dwelt start, raced centre, towards rear, outpaced and no impression from under 3f out (op 33/1)

RUNNING LION - WON 6/1 - wasn't seen to best effect at Epsom but, under a well-judged ride, returned to her best back at a more conventional track, despite her double-figure draw. The Falmouth looks the obvious next step, where she'll be interesting if allowed to dominate.RP

Well treated on his best form and recent efforts have contained more encouragement than the bare result indicate, not at home on the track at Epsom last time. Could be a player in first-time tongue tie if he's drawn on the right side.

Better than ever when winning Lincoln at Doncaster on heavy ground on reappearance. Didn't back that up on a quicker surface at Newmarket next time and looks vulnerable.

€460,000 2-y-o. Dam, unraced, closely related to Jersey Stakes winner (runner-up in Irish 2000 Guineas) Gale Force Ten. Very expensive breeze-up purchase who overcame a tardy start and obvious greenness when edging out Moving Force at Beverley. Level-weights this time but sure to build on that.

Very much caught the eye when 2 lengths seventh of 13 to Qirat in a valuable 7f handicap at Goodwood last month, travelling strongly but not getting a run until it was all too late. Will stay 1m. Interesting runner.
