Frankie Dettori Retirement Year Thread

Does anyone still care?

He's already staged more comebacks than Frank Sinatra - and almost as many as Hayley Turner!

Still a cracking jockey, was polite to me the only time I ever encountered him, I take as I find so can't have an issue with him, but he's one of those people I suspect if I'd met him a few more times I might have developed a different personal opinion on.

I very much doubt it.

It was the briefest of encounters.

I'd arrived slightly late at Windsor races one evening, and was walking briskly in to catch the second race, he'd had just the one ride in the opener and was walking out, he stopped to let me in my haste past him, which I thought was actually quite polite, considerate, and not at all egotistical.

I simply said "thank you" as I walked past, while thinking to myself: "he seems like a regular guy to me with no side to him, I can't knock that."

But maybe that's as good as it gets with him!

None of it really matters and I honestly couldn't care less if he's still doing his umpteenth farewell tour in ten years' time - he won't be getting any money off me out of it.

I pull my face at paying a tenner for a bottle of wine and this little bast*rd has 70k's worth of the stuff hidden away.
Remind me which country is he riding his farewell ride next.
 
I would bet my house on the little sh!t having a hell of a lot more in assets, as well as substantial amounts of money hidden away somewhere, possibly in overseas or Swiss accounts, that haven't been disclosed.

The houses, wine, watch, etc, are peanuts in the big scheme of his earnings over the decades. I don't know if he was the first to do so but Lester Piggott allegedly demanded shares in his classic winners as part of his riding contracts and they were worth millions upon millions, so much so that he donald-ducked off to live in Switzerland and avoid paying UK taxes. I'd be flabbergasted if Dettori didn't have similar arrangements in place.

There is indeed much truth in the adage that the love of money is the root of all evil. (Perhaps "all" is stretching it a bit because there are just some evil people out there as we all know, but it is a big player.)

It will not take him long to make millions. Book deals,maybe a movie made,adverts and appearences. But he has earned it all and seems to be a very decent bloke. It can not be easy staying at the top of your game for decades?
Look at Laura Pearson. She burst onto the scene 6 years ago,won often and was hailed as the next big thing. Then she was reduced to running one race per meeting.Now she has not been seen for ages.

Lets hope that Billy Louchnane can keep it going. But he seems to have his head screwed on.

Totally agree, but for some people - I dunno, someone like Frankie Dettori - once they get the love for money, they become utter greedy bastards. They are not nice people.

I wouldnt disagree. However, paying tax to this government or the last few regimes wouldnt be high on my list of priorities if I had a choice. Might aswell set fire to it.

I get that, Danny. But those at the top end of “earners” shouldn’t get to pick and choose whether they pay taxes or not - no one should. Paying your “share” keeps our type of society civilised.

Sorry, I digress.
