Rather than winners and losers you backed, how did the horses you really didn't fancy fare?

Horses I Got Wrong:

Jezki – I was on MTOY, and was counting my dosh as I saw who was the danger jumping the last.* I was preparing myself to hear a bark, but the Harrington yolk stayed on resolutely.
Sire de Grugy – I thought he would struggle to be placed.
Hidden Cyclone – I was amazed how well he ran yesterday.* Never liked the horse, but he is winning me around gradually.

Big Buck’s – Same
 
I backed Hollywell ante post for the Kim Muir, kicked myself when I didn't back him for the one he won.

suppose that's right but wrong..

I couldn't see Jezki making the first four, and dismissed O'Faolains Boy as not good enough. I didn't give More of That a chance either.

Jezki for me . Underrated him. I never underate that trainer and jockey though
More of that. Slipped into bad habit of assuming a matc
dodging bullets. I knew he was just short of top class but still backed

new one. Knew that he is a quite wonderfully game and yet explosive performer
fly wrong age to have hardest test to date
sdg class above and a few lbs ofg for supposed chelt factor was never enough. Had been strangely underrated despite electric ascot peformance

Wrong-JEZKI,Vautour,Irving,Taquin de seuil

Add kings palace and silviniaco to one of those lists,I'm balls deep in the former.Further than balls actually.....
 
Right:
Jezki. He was great value immediately after the last Festival
Hurricane Fly. On fast ground and a decent pace he was never gonna hold off all the young guns.
Smad Place. Had decent Festival form and looked a smashing jumper. Just found one too good.
Wonderful Charm. Had a nice price about him for the RSA. The JLT was always gonna be too short unless the ground was soft.

Wrong:
Jezki. I went off him and never topped up after the summer.
Al Ferof. For all he struck into himself yesterday I would think he is nowhere near the horse he was when he won the PP.
Dynaste.
Felix Yonger.
 
Right:
Hurricane Fly and Big Bucks. Felt it could be the passing of the baton to younger horses in both races and so it proved.

O'Faolains Boy. Backed this ante post but then saw it flop at Haydock. Can always forgive a horse one bad run and confidence boosted when winning before the festival.

Present View. I was at Kempton in February and couldn't decide between Ballinvarrig and this one. Picked the wrong horse and was sure I'd get that money back with this one.

Faugheen. Every man and his dog seemed to fancy this before the race, at the previews etc and I felt this was more of a banker than Briar Hill or Annie Power.

Moreofthat. Was rated just 5lb behind Annie Power, was still unbeaten and had won at the course. Although giving 7lb to Annie Power it was a case of potential with both of them. Will Annie Power stay, will she battle? One priced at 6-4, other one was available at 10-1. I know what I made the value pick here.

Wrong:
Vautour. I thought the jockeys had been caught napping in Ireland and didn't give the horse enough credit for beating The Tullow Tank. Looked bloody amazing when romping home under another great front running Ruby ride.

Sire De Grugy. I don't know why I was put off. I put a lot of emphasis on class and class of victories and this horse had won grade 1 races but still I opposed it for Captain Conan. 3-1 looks decent in hindsight.

Rock On Ruby. I wasn't convinced by the jumps form but felt the class of the hurdles form could see him go close. He hasn't really been tested over fences and the age factor for going chasing worried me but I still backed this and Valdez. Got a better run from the latter but ROR was awful.

Jezki. I thought if an Irish horse was going to reverse form with Hurricane Fly it would be Our Conor. Didn't really fancy Jezki at all and felt MTOY or The New One looked better prospects. Maybe I am being harsh but I think if you reversed the jockeys in that race you'd have reversed the result too.
 
Wrong again

On several occasions in the last year I have been insulting to Lord Windemere, Lyreen Legend and the form of last season's RSA. It would appear that I was very wrong.
 
Ever get the feeling that the Festival would be much easier if the rest of the season didn't happen?

You're not the only one. And I thought On his Own was a no hoper only put in so Ruby would have a ride after Rubi Ball got injured

Wrong

O'Faolain's Boy: Backed him at Ascot and thought he got the run of things that day (actually backed Many Clouds after that run). Didn't think he could hack it in the RSA; I was shocked to see him win. In fairness, I still think it was a rubbish RSA.

Faugheen: Was of the opinion that his price was result of typical consensus Irish thinking not justified by performance and concerned by jumping. Deeply impressed with his run in the Royal & Sunalliance Hurdle. If Mullins conspires not to run him in the 2015 Arkle it will be a tragedy.


Positive: I backed More Of That on the back of Twitter reports well before the Stayers.

Positive: 7 days until the flag goes up on the first 2yo maiden of the year at the Curragh.
 
Right

The New One - Very unlucky. Huge Engine.
Tiger Roll - Gutsy, had big scope for improvement, love his head carriage!
Hurricane Fly - always a few lb's below his best at Chelt.

Wrong

Jezki - Never thought he was up to being a true Grade 1 horse. I stand corrected.
Felix Yonger - Seems he is NOT the second coming. Too many mistakes, not the phenomenal engine I had thought would get him out of trouble.
 
Right
Champagne Fever – Jumped great, stayed up the hill and just got chinned. No regrets
Vautour – Ditto, except the getting chinned bit
Faugheen – Needs to learn to jump
Balthazaar King – Great Dickie Johnson ride
Fingal Bay – Ditto, plus fantastic for a horse with such high expectations
Sire De Grugy – Couldn’t touch at 7/4, but 3/1 oncourse was irresistible

Wrong
Big Bucks – he was too old, wasn’t he
The Fly – Cheltenham not his track & too old?
Al Ferof – Gone at the game
Shuthtefrontdoor – Backed in 3 races...
Smad Place - took against him early in the season but have gradually fallen for him...
Mullins to have at least 5 winners – NAP of the week...oh so close, but biggest loser
 
Right:
Tiger Roll- Really liked his first race for GE
Vautour
Sire De Grugy- Was anti this horse in the lead up due to price but changed my mind due to the price on the day

Wrong:
Jezki- Didn't see it coming
Lord Windermere-same as above
Al Ferof- Thought the race was at his mercy
Dynaste-Has shown a lot more fight this week

Like others, my latent concerns about his ability to run to form over C&D were probably realised - not that I was going to admit them to any fu*cking fishwife beforehand.
Bobs Worth
Anyone else wonder what the jink after the last was all about? No surprise if he's reported injured soon.
Faugheen
Talked myself out of it. Was persistent about it too, until I'd convinced myself.
O’Faolain’s Boy
Committed too heavily to the ground having gone beyond the point he'd cope. I think the ground was probably pretty-neutral throughout the meeting, and worries beforehand about it being 'quick' were probably unfounded.
Whisper
The first time I've failed to back him since his Bumper days - put away by top-weight in a competitive handicap.
Fingal Bay

I don't give a monkey's......he's my new over-the-cliff horse, after roaring successes in a similar vein with yokes like Sports Line, Camden Tanner and Japhet.

Great to see him take this down and confirm the class of his Deloitte win.
Annie Power
She stayed - no doubt about it - and no doubt that she would have been totally out-paced in the Champion Hurdle (in my mind's eye, at any rate)
Spring Heeled
Had him shortlisted for all three 3m+ handicaps on the Tuesday, and actually remembered to back him for the Kim Muir.....which isn't my usual style.
Calipto
He should have won the Triumph - fact.
Lac Fontana
Thought I'd nailed the forecast with Diakali too. There's not too many better feelings at the Festival, than picking the winner of the County.
Hidden Cyclone
A run which brought a broad smile to my face.

All told, it was a good week financially, and a great week for socialising. I think the only new forum member I met was egdt, though it was good to see Roddy, Maruco, frontrunner and Grey as always. Maybe next time for everyone else.

PS. I am still shaking myself to pieces, and I was moderately sensible (though getting on it at 09:40 in the Plough on Tuesday, wasn't perhaps the wisest choice ever).

It's a young man's game.
