Im a local lad, so probably more sentiment to me than facts. But seems to me Trevor Hemmings owned horses are absolutely flying this season and he isn’t here to see it. Find it rather sad really.

Yes, I thought the same. Perhaps it’s because they are being put in the shop window.

Harry The Hat.
Used sell hats and caps at North Of England meetings and come to Ireland for the big Festival meets at Leopardstown, Listowel and coursing at Clonmel.
Died last August but just heard from Jane Willis today, who used come across with him and set up her stall beside him.
One nice man, may he Rest In Peace.

Ex jockey Taffy Thomas who rode between 1960's and 1980's passed away in a hospice this morning.

John Hassett, Quin Co Clare trainer and veterinary surgeon.
One of the most feared men in the betting ring in his time, John specialised in putting bookmakers and punters through the mill.
He was the bane of journalist John Comyn, who wrote an Inside Racing column in Sunday Independent in the 1980s with his antics.
He trained Baby Brew, a 5 furlong sprinter to progress from handicaps to finishing fourth in Prix de l'Abbaye and trained Generosa to win 3mile handicap Hurdle at Festival Tuesday and finish a close third in Coral Cup the following day.
Another horse , whose name escapes me landed a punt in an Easter Mallow handicap hurdle off a low weight, followed up at Punchestown Festival and made it a hat trick in valuable Murphys Hurdle Killarney May meet, carrying top weight at which stage horse was owned by John Magnier.
They found an apprentice riders flat maiden at Down Royal to win with a view to a Royal Ascot handicap run but the handicapper refused to give the horse a rating without another run.
Last chance saloon came at a Mallow Saturday early June meet but the horse was pencilled in for a Curragh gallop that morning.
By this time Racing Post and allsorts were following this horse's progress, which came to nought.
In a funny tit for tat with neighbouring trainer Tom Costello, he named a horse Honest Tom and Tom replied by naming one Innocent John.
May he Rest In Peace.

Nice words edgt.

The horse you're referring to is Back On Top - I remember this so vividly travelling to the Curragh to back him off a mark of 50 - I think it was the following year on from the Royal Ascot shenannigans. He had just won a handicap chase by half the track and was rated in the high 120s over jumps so looked a stone wall but not a penny for him on this day as he drifted in the ring from 5/2 out to 5/1. I get cold feet coming from one of the biggest punting yards but never in doubt off that mark. Sick!

John Hassett trained for some notable people, many of whom enjoyed a tilt at the ring including Sean Mulryan, the Coolmore connection, his pal from Mayo New York based restauranteur Austin Delaney and Jp. Indeed Jp bought his good chaser High Peak to be placed in the 4 miler at the festival and later won a Leopardstown Chase for EJOG. And who will ever forget Generosa.

RIP.

Bob Davies,Champion jockey 3 times, including a tie with Terry Biddlecombe, who won the Grand National on Lucius, gifted jockey who was a major part of racing in the 60's & 70's, has passed away.

Bob Davies along with Terry Biddlecombe, Ron Barry, Paul Kellaway, Bill Smith and Richard Pitman were the marquee jockeys when I started watching racing in the early seventies.

Was it Bob Davies whose name appeared on cards as 'BR Davies'?

I'd never have been able to tell you he rode Lucius.

David Thompson from Warren Greatrex' yard, took his own life at the weekend.
I'm really struggling to take this in. He always had time to listen to my witterings, really like my Muppet and used to say how fond of him he was, and what a character he was. Very polite, nice young man.
So sad for his family and all at Rhonehurst.

Bob Davies and Terry Biddlecombe were brothers in law at one stage ?
I remember Bob Davies taking a spare ride on Royal Mail in Grand National when Tommy Carberry turned the ride down, it must have been 1981 or 1982.
Rest In Peace.

I noticed on Twitter the following tweets from Jonathan Powell.

"So sorry to hear that Bob (RA) Davies has died. An entertaining character, he was so proud to win a hurdle race at Ascot on Pendil as a young jockey. After an extra late night out Bob once turned up to ride out for Fred Winter in a pink suit. The great trainer was not amused."

"Mike that is not the same Bob Davies. That was BR Davies who became champion jockey, married Terry Biddlecombe’s sister Sue, has been a key figure at Ludlow for many years and is still going strong."

He brought a young tearaway named Paul Carberry to England for three seasons as retained rider.
Paul was very homesick so used ride in Ireland every Sunday .
An injury caused him to miss one Festival which peed Mr Ogden off no end.
After a year Kim Bailey offered Paul a king's ransom to join his stable: Paul asked his father's advice which was to see out his agreement with Ogden, his word once broken having no further value.
Good advice from a top man, whatever his other failings.

Sound advice indeed.
