Kathy, unless the USA signs up to the Kyoto Agreement, and there's a quick stop to the appalling muck spilled out by - for example - Eastern European and Indian factories, and the unregulated vehicles knocking about outside Western Europe have to clean up their emissions, climate change is a done deal. It's curious that some of the worst polluters are not, in fact, 'First World' countries at all. They're from millions of filthy vehicles in places like India, Pakistan, Thailand, the Phillipines, China, and the ex-Russian states. If you've ever tried to breathe on a humid day on the streets of Bangkok or Bangalore, heaven help you!
There are many remits necessary to halt destructive practices, but the blame cannot be always conveniently laid at the feet of the Western countries in every instance. America should be ashamed of its stance on oil consumption and lousy emissions controls, since while it refuses to sign up, other countries feel they might just as well get away with not implementing costly controls, either. The self-appointed 'leader of the free world' is setting a lousy example in many areas, I'm afraid, and I'm not US-bashing just to be fashionable! But, of course, it's deeply unfashionable for (comparatively) wealthy young white people (or, from the look of Live8, squealingly rich middle-aged rockers) to castigate anyone but other whiteys. It's time the WHOLE world stopped screwing up - from Japan and its insistence on whaling (and the Faroe Islanders), to India's disgusting caste system still in place, to newly-Westernized East Europe taking to the sex trade like the old 'white slavers', to Thais trading in wild animals, and so on.

The Who are .were the best live band ever,hell, Velvet Underground 3 songs the Who 2. No My Generation!!! Floyd are no good live best with a J ,Headphones, shut your eyes and fly. Macca is crap,singer and football player.Turned down free tickets for prize giving. Miss Dynamite is superb but should blow up the VIP enclosure.

You know I can see you, now heres a surprise, I'm really Happy Jack, and I'm a
boy. I can't explain to you, the substitute Waters, who is not of my generation, that which grew up jacking prep and then watching the Who,hendrix,syd barrett and the floyd,frampton and the herd ,and even Tyrannousaurus Rex at the Marquee. Led the political discussion,when people cared , at the Windsor Jazz and and Blues Festival( held ,for some reason at Reading).Liberated the VIP area at the IOW and used he seats for fuel and told the anarchists they they were too organised.Had my Pictures of Lily stripped from my study walls along with the picture of the Vietnamese General shooting some poor bugger and of Verushka the 6ft 4" Russian model.
Met and liked the original influence for the Floyd,Mr Barrett, but while he and his friends had a nice niche for music to trip out to they could never compare to the raw vitality of the Who for a live performance.. Only band to compare was Santana at some place I can't remember in the south of France though must have gone there on the magic bus.
Anyway please don't abuse it's enough that the Orcs have arrrived for a christening tomorrow and I have almost single -handed(ly) prevented them from drinking our entire stocks of alcohol. The task has brought me to my knees.

It's Velvet Revolver Tout Seul
I can only assume you have never seen and heard Pink Floyd live in say the last fifteen years. Having said that I thought their choice of material and performance a bit flat last night although still one of the best on the day. Ms Dynamite and Snoop Dogs were awful I felt. Like you I failed to understand why the Who only performed two numbers whilst Velvet Revolver were allowed three.
Surprises for me were Dido, knowing what I know now I wish I had gone to the Eden Project show, didn't realise she was there. Also Madonna, never been a fan, but what a performance choirs, breakdancers and all.
Thought all the comedians, Kay, Henry, French, Gervaise and Beckham
died on their feet would have been better off without any of them Absent without leave
Dire Straits or even Mark Knopfler on his own
Phil Collins
David Bowie with or without Jagger
Queen with Paul Rogers or George Michael.
Tout Seul, whatever happened to Peter Frampton ? His Frampton Comes Alive album is permanently in my player.

The Radio 1 coverage was worse than dire - they are going to get one shitty email from me. I was hollering at the radio whilst they kept playing shit interviews or recordings from earlier performances WHILST THE WHO AND FLOYD WERE PERFORMING!!! I was livid - they eventually played one Who recording & a recoerding of Comfortably Numb YET managed to play Mariah sodding Carey when she performed! They didn't play The Killers or Velvet Revolver either - not happy! I was forced to listen to it on the radio as my TV has gone off to be fixed after blowing up. :angy:
Highlights for me were Floyd, Sterephonics, REM, Madonna, Razorlight, Robbie (no matter what you think of him, he's a great showman) and Snow Patrol off the top of my head. I'm looking forward now to seeing the bits I didn't see on TV (from Snow Patrol onwards) when I get back home in a couple of weeks.

The BBC obviously didn't show much of where we we standing then
I wasn't too far from the front, about 100 yards or so and I've almost lost my voice through singing at the top of my voice all bloody day long. I was sat amongst a group of really lovely people and we were all singing and jumping around like idiots from the moment it started. We sat down between acts (and I couldn't pick myself up off the floor for Snoop Dog or Velvet Revolver) to catch our breath before moving onwards and upwards to the next :lol: It felt surreal actually being there. I'm only 5ft 4ins and could barely see above the heads of those around me so I had no idea how far behind me the crowd stretched. Even when popping over to grab a burger, I was still unable to see how many people where there. I've since seen an aerial view and was gobsmacked! :lol:
The atmosphere was amazing. We were sat outside the enclosure at Hyde PArk from 9am, and they didn't let us in until shortly before 12pm. Everyone was chatting to everyone else, and this carried on once inside. I shared one of the best days of my life with so many complete strangers who were utterly delightful.
I spent much of the day in tears though :shy: I was overcome with emotion as soon as the concert started and was singing my heart out with tears rolling down my cheeks because little me was actually there in this wonderful place. I cried umpteen times during the day, Keane singing Bedshapes reduced me to tears, as did Annie Lennox singing Why, Sir Bob when he sang, and as always I was utterly inconsolable during Drive when they showed those scenes of the children dying. I don't think there was a dry eye in the park at that point
A few idiots started clapping but I couldn't move I've seen little bits of it on telly since I got back (at 2.30am I might add!) and I seem to share completely different views with those who watched it on TV. It looked and sounded so very different live and my highlights are going to be different to everybody elses. The start was a dissapointment, the crowd really didn't seem to get going until the Stereophonics who were amazing. Them singing The Bartender And The Thief really got the crowd going in a way that U2, ELton John and Coldplay had so far failed to do. I think that if Coldplay has sung Clocks that would have made a huge difference. Who can keep still when they sing that? The Phonics set us up for REM who were superb.
The best bits were Dido, Stereophonics, REM, Annie Lennox, Keane, Razorlight, Snow Patrol, Killers and Robbie Williams. They were who sounded good on the ground, but maybe once I've seen it all on video I'll have a different view?
I'm sorry to say that we had to leave after Robbie Williams so we didn't see The Who, Pink Floyd or George Michael. The last train was at 11.45 and we had to get back to Euston for that. It's a shame they couldn't have started performing earlier because so many people missed out by having to leave early

Glad you had a good time, Griffin - my little bro was there too. I thought the 'Phonics were superb too, they really are something else live. Local Boy In A Photograph really is the most amazing song.

There wasn't a bad performance in my opinion. Of course, some of the acts have never interested me with their music, but that's just a matter of personal taste. The whole was a phenomenal success as far as a music event goes.
Pink Floyd, without Roger Waters, consists of an enormous band of session musicians who create a massive sound and take their music to an epic level.

Watching on TV, I couldn't believe how poor the crowd seemed. I'm sure there were pockets of it where things were lively, but most of the crowd shots seemed to be of masses of people standing with their arms folded.
From what I saw, Razorlight were brilliant - Johnny Bovril is a superstar in the making. The ridiculous guitar-wank of Comfortably Numb was a highlight too. Bit of a shame that the organisers decided to close out with a load of dinosaurs, though.

I saw that line up at Earls Court performing The Wall, the most amazing show ever but to this day have never found a recording of that show which they performed for several nights although I have one of their concert there a few years ago and one they performed in the States in the eighties.

They did release "The Wall Live" about 2 or 3 years ago. It was from the tour of that time.

I am just watching the US concert now. There was not much I didn't enjoy about the Hyde Park show, although I am not a big fan of The Who, I still enjoyed their set. I managed to watch 90% of it, and although some acts were clearly better than others, I think overall it was a huge success.
