Jockey News

I’ll always remember when he rode Neptune Collonges in the National. Mr Hales was so nervous about him running he said to Daryl, if he isn’t happy at any stage pull him up, even if it’s going down to the start. So he really trusted him. He deserved that win.

Oh it was so close wasn’t it. Didn’t he suffer an injury at the end of the race? I’ve never been able to rewatch the race because of what happened to According to Pete, though. A dead heat would have been a good result.

Yeah, he broke down on the run in, bless him. If it wasn’t for the adrenaline masking it for him I like to think he’d have won if he didn’t. Such a sweet horse - and tiny as well, there wasn’t much of him - especially up against the girt big Neptune!

Every sportsman dies twice....

An update from Dr Jennifer Pugh, chief medical officer of the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board, said: "Michael is in the intensive care unit at Cork University Hospital being treated for his injuries sustained at Thurles yesterday and is receiving the best medical care.

"Michael's family wish to express their gratitude for all the well wishes."

Fingers crossed indeed - such a talented young jockey .

Whenever I hear an air ambulance has been called I am taken back to that black day at Cheltenham when JT McNamara was injured.

Brilliant article from Ruby today in the paper concerning the life of a jockey around the backdrop of incident with Michael O'Sullivan

In the event some of it is behind the paywall , a bit that stood out

Why? Because it's their dream, they love it, they want it, and once they have felt it, they can't let it go. My father-in-law always tells me that youth is wasted on the young, and he is right in many ways, but youth was never wasted on a jump jockey. The energy, ambition, and drive of youth pushes those who dream of riding racehorses into a path filled with danger but coated in sugar. The thrill of the speed hooks them, the ecstasy of winning delights them, and the pain of falling or losing only ignites the passion to do it all again.
