King George VI Chase - Boxing Day, Kempton

Good man, TheBear. Hope you didn't lay any double-figure prices.

Stan James now all alone at 12/1.....10's next biggest.

Save yourself. :D

Lay? Good grief no, I don't do such things. Those quotes are not enough to change my mind. I'd love to see him win the Gold Cup one day because he's my favourite horse in training. I also want to see him put up one of those awe inspiring performances which we saw last March and that's what he'll do in the Ryanair!

Indeed. But I was referring to his four attempts at the Gold Cup Luke. If the Ryanair had existed he'd have won three of them.

I'm not sure -I remember Willie saying he would run in a Gold Cup and if he was beaten so be it.
Theoretical question -if FP and Wayward Lad were reincarnated tomorrow and be at their absolute best what race would you advise the owners to run in at the festival.

I was never a fan of Florida Pearl (no idea why - just didn't grab me the way WL did) but did he ever (?) win at Cheltenham? (I'll check the RP site in a mo.)

We know from that race :( that WL just didn't get up the hill.

I'm not sure either might have won at that track over shorter, or at least a proper G1 (ie one with more than one 170+ opponent).

Apologies to all FP fans. He did indeed win twice at Cheltenham: the bumper and the RSA.

On seeing that Escartefigue was second in the latter race with the pair miles clear you have to wonder about the quality of that renewal, though. Probably pretty poor apart from those two.

Coming back to Luke's original question, it's hard if not impossible to arrive at a decision without hindsight. It's a bit like asking a jury to disregard a remark already made. So the Ryanair would be the one.

It was Escartifgue winning at Aintree the following month that suggested the form of that Sun Alliance was strong. Maybe incorrectly. The big day for Florida Pearl was the fall he took vs Dorans Pride in the following years Lexus.
