Ladbrokes Trophy (ex Hennessy Gold Cup) Newbury Sat Nov 27th 2021

Now that he is back out to 14/1 and with extra places on offer, I can't not back Cloth Cap. I got 12s boosted to 13+/1 and the seventh place. A front-running ride like last year's will make him very difficult to kick out of the frame.

I still believe it's a high-quality race but accept that it depends on one's definition of "quality". I thought the same last year but Cloth Cap took a lot of his opponents out of their comfort zone and I can see him trying to do the same. I still think one or two of the second-season chasers will hang on to the pace and run him out of it but can't be sure which ones it will be. It will be a new experience for most of them, racing at his pace.

I think the field is better than last year and fewer horses will be out of their comfort zone. I'd be more concerned about his wind problems than some. But he is overpriced, would see him closer to a 8/1 shot.

You can have 4,000 to 200 on the machine so I doubt if he'll start anywhere near 8/1

TBH it's such a close knit h'cap the fav is way too short and it should be double figures the field.

Paul Nichols is very confident that his will go close and probably should be fav for this.

The bookies have ceased on the chance to make Eklat De Rire a false favourite on the back of A Plus Tard's win
No way can his current price be justified

I'll stick to Cloth Cap 21/1 win and cover my bet with 2.32 to be in the first 7.

and Fiddleronthehoof ew at 9/1 on the machine

Eklat de Rire is a false price (may drift after Mr Incredible got turned over), Enrilo falls short on trends and Onheropes and several others don't look well handicapped. A bit of value in Fiddlerontheroof (have it in a double with Epatante who gets 7lbs from a 4yo) I think, with the form just given a bit of a boost with Ahoy Senor winning.

Four-out is a fair way from home, but I’m feeling like my pocket has been picked with Remastered’s fall.

Fiddlerontheroof would surely have won if Remastered hadn’t come down in front of him. Great to see that one got up as it looked quite nasty

Well done to Venetia and team and great to see the Hemmings colours in the winner’s enclosure

Very interesting observations afterwards about how you have to be up on the front end and into that relentless rhythm for this race. And of course Venetia’s horses do gallop.....thought the horse looked a picture beforehand which was why I backed it....oh and a wind op?

I was out and about today so didn't see the race live but the brother phoned me just after the race to say the same thing.

If anyone cares to check back to the post with my ratings, the winner was joint third (or joint second if you want to be generous ) but I just felt I was being too generous with that piece of form.

I have to say, though, it tanked through the race. Was it over in Ireland in the close season?

How Remastered got up from that I'll never know. A horror fall and so unnecessary to fire him at it when he was cantering all over them.

Enrilo is generally as good a jumper as you'll see, my mate was cursing the life out of me as I said that seconds before he came down!

Eklat perhaps one that needs it bottomless.

I had Remastered and Fiddler' and feel a tad hard done by. Especially when one of the worst form cases wins the race.

I have to say, just thinking about how the winner travelled through the race, it must have a serious shout in the National. Off 140 here, it will go up 10lbs or thereabouts (any less is lenient) so will be guaranteed to make the cut. If it comes out of the race in good order and improves again, it will travel better than most round Aintree. Those colours could end up on another serious contender.

That's a very bold call to make. The winner if anything was going every bit as well

You should watch the Pertempts H'cap Hurdle at Aintree

He seemed to be cantering all over another Hemmings horse Deise Aba 2 out but
found very little when push came to shove after the last and was very one paced and finished 3rd'

It could be due to the fast he has never won beyond 3 miles

He was 2nd over yesterday's distamce in the Kim Muir - unsurprising he was outpaced in a slower race at Aintree. No danger of that, yesterday with the other TH horse forcing the pace.
Just an observation, mind.

 I was talking about Remastered not the winner Reet.

Thought Remastered was going very easily when he fell, but there was still a pretty fair way to go. Fiddler’s swerve cost him around the distance he went down by and it’s a shame he’ll go up by a few pounds - Remastered won’t.

Very thankful to report that a Remastered seems none the worse for his fall @NewburyRacing. Gutted as he was running a terrific race & who knows what might of been but most importantly there will be others days to look forward to with him

Also, backers of Ontheropes are entitled to feel at least a little miffed that their horse wasn't really allowed to be competitive, having been anchored out the back - never the place to be in a modern Hennessy.

I wouldn't argue that he would/should have won but he would certainly have been closer.

If the horse just couldn't go the pace then it obviously has its limitations.

OTR made a couple of erros early-on which saw him lose his mid-division pitch, DO.

Apo;ogies; the Aintree ref threw me.

To be honest I never even knew the horse was in the race until he too Cloth Cap on and in the same colours.

I know it's after the fact but you have to wonder how a horse who has finished 2nd in a competitive h'ap at the festival

Plus the winner has gone on to win a listed chase and yet he was allowed to go off at 33/1
It just emphasis why betting in handicaps is the mug of mugs game

The only reason apart frpm being one of those mugs is because of sentimental reasons.

The Hennessey being one of the fab 5 we end up having a winner every 10 years in...ie The Grand National, The Mackeson, The Massey Ferguson, The Schweppes and the Whitbread Gold Cup.
