Longchamp this Weekend

Sheesh for Melbourne ? thats a crazy idea, you need a finishing kick for that and he can't be hiding down the handicap a la DK runners.

There seems to be an idea that an out and out galloper cannot win the Melbourne Cup simply because Yeats couldnt. The truth is Yeats was given a crazy ride and was at the end of a long season for him.

Mahler (off a light weight) is the definition of an out and out galloper and he ran well in it. Septimus is not slow (won a Group race over 10f last season) and will hopefully be ridden as though pace is not an issue.

Anyway that is another topic for a different thread!

I think if it continues to rain where the ground was soft/heavy AOB would pull Septimus out of quarantine and run him in the Arc with SOF. If that happens then he could not go for the Melbourne Cup.

pouring rain all day today;

im soaked, now know he was called azertyuiop thanks to this annoying keyboard in net cafe rrrarrrrrr

Will all the time buffs keep an eye on the first at Longchamp please! Give us first impressions on the ground.

Ok, the going. The annoyingly imprecise Equidia time came up as 191 seconds.

Here's the times of all 3yo Group 2s run over that distance at Longchamp that are in the RP database along with the official going on the day:

188.1 Good
189.4 Firm
189.9 Good
190.6 Good To Firm
Edit - today's race at 190.7 fits in here
191.2 Good
192.2 Good
192.6 Good
192.9 Good To Soft
193.0 Good
195.8 Soft
195.8 Good To Soft
196.1 Very Soft
196.4 Soft
197.8 Soft
200.6 Soft
201.2 Holding
206.7 Very Soft
219.8 Heavy

So as you can see, a time around 191 seconds suggests the ground is pretty good. The only caveat is that I don't know if all of those times above were run around the Moyenne Piste but I'll check on that.

Cheers for that Gareth. Does not look "proper" good ground though given the lumps of turf they were firing up....perhaps similar to the Moulin ground (loose on top).

Today is meant to remain dry (looks a lovely day there) but rain is forecast for tonight and tomorrow morning.

Is Gagnoa a non-stayer over ~1m4f or has she just got a massive hole in her? Travelling beautifully with a couple of furlongs to go and then just went backwards.

The on-screen caption had the time at ~158s.

Here's the times of all of the all-aged G2 races run at Longchamp over the distance of 12.5f. Given the idiosyncratic distance, this basically means every renewal of the Prix de Royallieu:

157.5 Good
Edit: today's race at 158.3 fits in here
158.9 Good
159.4 Good
159.4 Good
159.4 Good To Soft
159.5 Good
160.3 Soft
161.2 Good To Firm
161.3 Soft
161.9 Good To Soft
162.2 Soft
162.6 Good To Soft
163.2 Soft
164.8 Soft
165.0 Soft
168.6 Holding
169.0 Heavy
169.3 Very Soft
173.8 Soft
183.8 Heavy

A large amount of the Grande Piste has been dolled off for tomorrow, increasing the distance run, so you'd have to say the ground is certainly Good by Longchamp's own standards. They're definitely knocking plenty of divots off the top though.

James Willoughby is passing info over to RUK and said that after the Chaudenay he thought the ground was Good To Soft, but after the "excellent" time of the Royallieu he thinks closed to Good.
