Mr. Byrnes

Good luck to them, there doesn't seem to be anything dodgy here. The horse's form was on an upward curve in the second half of last season and it showed a preference for good going. It was tried over a longer trip on its debut this season but is now back to what seems to be its best distance.

He had him well placed early on but just let him drift back and didn't mae a huge amount of effort in the straight. It wasn't as bad a Byrnes easy ride that I've seen. The day he won his maiden hurdle was much worse, although he still managed to win it despite his jocks best efforts.

What is clear is that the Turf Club are setting down a marker for Byrnes that if he continues to carry on as he has, his number is up. The €2k fine will not worry Byrnes and in some way, that's the problem. If the fine was €10k he might have ensured his rider gave the horse a few cracks and placed him closer. But until the penalties, for both jocks (effort and interferene) and trainers increase, the laws will be broken with regularity.

It was a terrible ride,up there with the rest of 'em,the Maiden hurdle alluded to by Cantoris above was an absolute disgrace,a cancer in racing (unless you're privy to information direct from he stable)

After deciding to appeal he's no done an about face after talking to the owner. Clearly the owner has told him that if he pisses the Turf Club off any more by standing there and insulting their intelligence that they will never land a gamble again. Byrnes number is up in my book. You'd think he'd back off for a year and then he could land another monster gamble. But he can't sit still. He has to plan something every few months. And in doing so he will irritate the authorities and it must only be a matter of time before he gets into serious bother.

Any trainer trying to get a future Champion Hurdle contender into the Pierse hurdle off a featherweigh knows no bounds.
