New C4 coverage

I agree with mist of what DO says....but the BBC road cycling coverage at the Olympics was terrible

It was, and Hugh Porter needs to be put out to seed, but they were hamstrung by a complete botch job by the Olympic Broadcasting Service who provided the feed and the (complete lack of) timing data.

I bow to your superior knowledge of the sport but I only saw bits and bobs of the road races. I found it hard to follow because it isn't a straightforward race but I thought the commentators helped [me] a bit.

Maybe I'm mixing him up with another pundit, but I'm sure he went back to try his hand at managing with Partick Thistle and only lasted a few games.
I looked up a few reference sources. Looks like I'm mixing him up with big DJ who regularly spouts his sprouts on Clyde radio.

Former Channel 4 racing pundit John McCririck is seeking £3m in damages from the broadcaster after he was dropped last year.

McCririck was one of a number of faces dropped from the presenting team after Channel 4 awarded the production contract to IMG Sports Media, ending its previous agreement with Highflyer.

McCririck was vocal in his criticism of the decision when it was announced last October and has decided to pursue Channel 4 and IMG Sports Media through the courts.

In a statement issued to Press Association Sport, he said: "Channel 4 and production company IMG Sports Media were yesterday each served a letter before action for age discrimination.

"After 29 years with Channel 4 Racing, on a rolling annual contract, I have been sacked without any consultation or cogent explanation. I am 72.

"For loss of future earnings, unfair career damaging, public humiliation, stress and mental anguish, I will be seeking £500,000.

"Ageism is illegal. For tens of thousands of employees it has become the feared scourge of our society.

"This litigation should prove to be a watershed.

"There's no upper limit to the amount of damages employment tribunals can award under the Equality Act 2010.

"I am seeking a further exemplary, punitive £2.5m, part of which will be donated to charitable organisations helping to prevent negative prejudice in the workplace."

McCririck said he was being represented on a no-win no-fee basis by employment and sports law specialist solicitor Stephen Beverley, of the London West End Cavendish Legal Group.

they could just have sacked him for being shite? not a court in the land would disagree

Being serious,I don't think they could sack him for being shite as he has always been shite. For me the relevant bit is that he only had a one year contract.

I don't think it's that simple, Sheikh.

He has had a succession of contracts amounting to continuity of employment over a long number of years, which gives him certain rights under labour law.

yeh, think you could be right, there is a magic no. I can't remember what it is, 2years or something, after that it's hard to get rid of someone.

I know very little about employment law, but would that not mean Cattermole, etc, could pursue similar actions.

Is there any difference between the McCririck contract and the one year deal Giggs and Scholes have at Utd.

My view is if he didn't like the one year deals, he should have looked elsewhere.

Does this mean he will keep his ATR job until he dies ?

I cannot comment on his claim for age discrimination other than I note that C4 say they consulted and carried out audience research before making their decision. Their case will no doubt be that age was not the reason for not giving him a new contract.

His exemplary damages claim is laughable posturing . Exemplary damages can be awarded in discrimination claims but generally only in the most extreme circumstances and exemplary damages are unlikely to reach five figures let alone six .

If he was on a one year rolling contract then he does have rights under employment law. This type of contract is commonplace in a few professions. Some local Authorities have their teaching staff on this type of contract as it gives them flexibility from year to year i.e numbers of students fluctuate. After two yearly contracts the employee has certain rights, that of a permanent employee. The employer has two choices then from year to year, well three really.1 another one year contract or longer 2. A redundancy or compensation package 3.permanent contract.
I would say that a company like channel 4 would not have left themselves open to such a claim that is being made and if there was a suggestion of ageism then evidence would be hard to come by,if you get my drift.

Excellent and informative show this morning, snappy and almost devoid of the bullsh!t of the old format. I suppose it was helped by the high ratio of intelligent Irish people featured.

McCririck's absence is like when a painful tooth is extracted. A weird sense of palpable relief that the pain is not there anymore. Someday we will think him like smoking in restaurants or The Bay City Rollers. How on earth did we ever think it was a good idea?

I think he was let down by his producers. When the connections of HL decided they were too suspicious to be interviewed - looks to me like they were saying they didn't fancy their chances much - they should just have pulled the plug on the idea and interviewed connections of something else.
