CRYSTAL PEGASUS

Bath 24 August 2020
Sky Sports Racing Sky 415 Novice Stakes
1m2f, Class 5, £3,493.26
Going: Good To Soft

Two of my tracker horses, this one and MOOMBA were to fight this out until MOOMBA was withdrawn. This left CRYSTAL PEGASUS a red hot favourite and he won as easily as a 4/11 favourite should. I don’t think he’s finished yet.

OBTUSE

Leicester 10 August 2020
Bodie Hodges Foundation Nursery Handicap
7f, Class 5, £3,493.26
Going: Good To Firm

Obtuse raced behind the leaders and got bumped and squeezed 1 furlong out which checked his beginning challenge. He got it together 1/2 furlong out and moved through from 5th to 2nd. Presumably he had shot his bolt then since his rider appeared to stop pressing him strongly and he was passed by the fast finishers into a close 7th. There was no money for him (nor in his previous races) but his mark looks workable in similar races. Watch the money!

A smattering of money interest at 11/1 opening. He was 10/1 coming out the gate and mysteriously returned at 7/1. Mediocre run and in a lower class, too. Raced with the pack and needed reminders to keep up from 3 furlongs out. Jockey again appeared to give up on him when he made no progress. I guess he flattered to deceive last time.

LAST EMPIRE

Beverley 27 August 2020
William Hill Beverley Bullet Sprint Stakes (Listed Race)
5f, Class 1, £17,013
Going: Soft

After winning three on the bounce last year she has been highly tried at Class 1 over 6 furlongs in her four races before this, but without much success. Although this was not a star studded Class 1 she did well at her first try over five furlongs. She was squeezed to the back after the start and raced there or thereabouts until Tudhope got her going with a furlong to go. She moved strongly through the field keeping pace with the winner, although not closing him down at all, to finish second.

She’ll probably continue to struggle in most Class 1 events, but lowering her sights a little might see her back in the winner’s circle.

LONE EAGLE

Sandown 7 Aug 2020
British EBF Maiden Stakes (Class 5) (Turf)
2yo 1M Winner: £4,140 (8 runners)
Good to Firm

I thought this was a good debut for Lone Eagle. The winner, Recovery Run - who had already run well in a couple of decent all weather events, raced mostly in the lead throughout with Lone Eagle tracking him a length or two adrift. He had to be pushed a bit to hold position some 2 furlongs out and made his effort with Recovery Run inside the final furlong when just over a length adrift. Finished the better to go down by a head in the end with the rest miles away.

Well, he won alright but a neck is not what you expect from an 11/4on favourite!!

ZWELELA

Newbury 15 August 2020
Unibet Fillies' Novice Stakes (Plus 10/GBB Race) (Div II)
6f, Class 5, £3,493.26
Going: Good To Soft

There were two division of the 2yo fillies 6f Novice. The first, probably the stronger race, was won quite impressively by debutante Alcohol Free. In the second there was late money for Zwelela, also a debutante, bringing her to joint favourite at 9/4 (from 9/2). She raced behind the leading group, moving forward steadily from about 2f out when 5th and about 4 lengths behind the leader. She finished best of all and just failed to overhaul the joint favourite going down by a head in the end. A very good opener.

Newmarket 28 August 2020
MansionBet Best Odds Guaranteed Fillies' Novice Stakes (Plus 10/GBB Race)
7f, Class 5, £3,493.26
Going: Soft

An easy to back favourite she never looked like competing. Challenged two out then faded away. She never got close to her Newbury performance and it was good to soft there so the unsuitable ground excuse doesn’t cut much ice.

Thought Lullalby Moon particularly impressive in the 1st at Goodwood today. Set a good pace in the ground, and had plenty left to repel boarders. If she takes up her entry n the big Redcar 2yo race next Saturday and the ground stays similar, she'll make 'em all go.

GRAND SCHEME

Goodwood 30 August 2020
Ladbrokes Watch Racing Online For Free Maiden Auction Stakes
1m, Class 5, £3,881.40
Going: Good To Soft

I thought this was quite a solid race. The winner, Classic Lord, was first to come under pressure of the three leaders and deserves credit for determination and a strong finish. Meanwhile Grand Scheme raced towards the rear and moved quite well from 3 furlongs out with Pat Dobbs putting his foot down 2 furlongs out. Although he responded well the leading three moved away from him until inside the final furlong when he began to close up and really came into his own in the last half furlong to pinch second from his better fancied stable companion near the line. Encouraging.

BLUE HERO

Wolverhampton 11 August 2020
British Stallion Studs EBF Penn Novice Stakes
6f, Class 5, £4,140.16
Going: Standard To Slow

Ryan Moore was on the dirt to take the win on Vindicate, but this was an interesting booking. He raced Blue Hero mid-division until it began to matter when he moved up on the inside and just over a furlong out the Johnston “catch me if you can” runner rolled onto the rail thwarting his path. Jerked vigorously right, but not seeming to lose much momentum in the process, Blue Moon was now over a length adrift but ran on stoutly under Moore’s urging to go down by a neck and a nose.

The Johnston runner hung on for second at 25/1 about an hour before his aptly named Run This Way employed similar catch me tactics to win at Haydock at 22/1 - reet hard please note!!

Sandown 31 Aug 2020
Cobham Nursery Handicap
7f, Class 5, £3,493.26
Going: Good To Soft

Carried top weight. Raced a bit (too?) exuberantly in lead until 2 furlongs out when crowded by the pack (there were three joint 9/2 favourites, then two @ 5/1) when he lost his action and threw in the towel to drift in nearly twenty lengths behind the winner. This was 7 furlongs rather than the 6 furlongs of his previous efforts, but I don’t think that was the problem. I’ll give him another look before binning him.

ACQUISITOR

Bath 13 August 2020
valuerater.co.uk Maiden Auction Stakes
5½f, Class 5, £3,493.26
Going: Good To Firm

First run and nothing expected at 18/1 Acquisitor looked the part racing just behind the leading group only to be taken by the heels when things started hotting up to be left a two or three lengths in arrears and second to last. Frankie Norton kept him at it and with around half a furlong left he finally caught on and stormed home to finish right on the heels of the placed horses in fourth. I thought it was an encouraging opener.

Runs today at Bath. Bad draw and has drifted badly in the betting. Probably won’t be his day.

PS: and so it proved, although not disgraced in fifth.

Going: Good

Well, here I am 7 years old and first time over fences. Tried the hurdles eight times and never better than fourth. Oliver must have thought a bit about me, though, as he put me in a Class 3 up against Lost in Transation and Simply the Betts. Mind you I was 200/1 and finished forty lengths behind. Anyway, this is the second time I’ve run since a wind operation. Wow, I do like jumping these fences and it’s amazing that I can actually breath - I feel great so I’ll give it my best shot even though at 14/1 they don’t expect much - less that Desert Orchid fellow is having a punt. Here’s the last, up and over, it’s ok Jonathon, I know, I know, off we go. What, where is everyone? They’ve all disappeared. Bloody Hell, I’m going to win the thing. Easy peasy, I could really get to like this.

Ascot 8 Aug 2020
ITV Home Of Terrestrial Racing Handicap
6f, Class 2, £12,938
Going: Good To Firm

Oisin Murphy seemed to have a lot of horse under him, but short of room 2 furlongs out. Squeezed through a small gap 1 furlong out and moved away quickly to win readily. A strong performance.

Runs at Salisbury 3:40 tomorrow. 13/8 fav in early price, up 9lbs but should win unless drifting.

Ps: it did drift out to 9/4 and ran accordingly.

Beverley 18 August 2020
British EBF Spurn Head Fillies' Novice Stakes (Plus 10/GBB Race) (Div II)
5f, Class 5, £4,140.16
Going: Good

Whilst she has had a couple of earlier tries at Sandown and Goodwood she didn’t run here as if she knew the business. Jinked a couple of times, wandered about a bit and taken by the heels mid-race, she never really got going until just over half a furlong out when she finished like a train running on strongly to win comfortably at 5/1. Not sure about the strength of the race, but you can only race against what’s there and she looked quite smart. Probably need to see her in better company to see that it was not a mirage.

Runs Salisbury 3:10 tomorrow. Straight into Group 3 from her Class 5 win so certainly better company. 33/1 early price and Hannon”s second string. Can’t expect much.

Ps: nd fidn’t get it.

Me2 Club EBF Future Stayers' Maiden Stakes (Sire/Dam Restricted Race) (Plus 10 Race)
7f, Class 3, £11,644.20

All the talk was of the debut run of Enable’s half-brother Derab and he did indeed look very promising to finish in second. My eye, however, was drawn to the winner La Barrosa also having his first run. He was last off the bit and picked up strongly when asked forging clear to win with James Doyle never giving him so much as a tap. Very impressive

AKMAAM

Ascot 5 September 2020
Stella Artois British EBF Novice Stakes (Plus 10 Race)
7f, Class 4, £6,469
Going: Good

Another hot 2-y-o appears on the scene. AKMAAM cruised along and was last to come off the bit. Asked for a bit of an effort he surged strongly ahead to go clear without Brian Meehan laying a tap on him - nor much else as far as I could see - to win easily by 4 lengths. Not much was expected, although he came down from early price 20/1 to his starting 12/1. They must be pleased with what they’ve got!

From the trainer the morning of the race......12.45 Akmaam "Akmaam is a very nice son of Wootton Bassett. He is one for the future."

Allow me to add one.

Omnivega was held up too far back at Ascot on Saturday off a moderate pace and, while it made good ground with a daring run up the inside after straightening up, it had to much to do even before the gap closed on it and it was allowed to coast home under tender handling. Not Hayley Turner's finest moment but I wouldn't rush to blame her. She was probably riding to instructions.

No axe to grind either. I backed the winner.

Omnivega runs tomorrow at Newcastle 4:45 7/4 early price.

Not up to snuff atm so can’t face reviewing the races. Normal service will be resumed in due course :)

Get well soon.

Thanks Col, it’ll not take too long I hope. Meant I could spend the afternoon enjoying the racing from Newton Abbot so that’s a plus :). Some interesting runs:

Jack Thunder coming second at 66/1 was no fluke, he ran a sound race, bit clumsy at a few hurdles, and would have won easily but for the fast finishing favourite. Dariya ran before she is raised 10lbs but had a job to hold Gaot with the rest over ten lengths behind. Cheltenham de Vaige won with ease and goes from strength to strength putting the Sedgefield setback behind him. Lastly, and best of all Long Stay treated his rivals with complete distain in the bumper and must surely have a rosy future in front of him.

Yep - good shout for the thread.

And needless to say I didn't back it.

Because it was at Kempton I didn't even know it was running. I didn't even know Kempton was on, let alone on TV. When I heard them talking about it beforehand I thought to myself, "Where do I know that name from? Some dick must've put it up on the forum."

I only watched the last couple of furlongs, not even knowing it was a hot favourite but hoping whoever had put it on the forum had backed it.

Your memory must be as bad as mine, Desert. I posted yesterday that it was running at Kempton today and you thanked me for the post! Do keep up old boy

Just preoccupied, Barjon.

Things aren't sticking around in the old bonce with so many other things to deal with.

Like form, it's just temporary.
