On This Day In (Racing) History

18/10/1979
Henry Cecil's Kris wins his 7th race of the year (8 runs) in the Challenge Stakes (included Greenham, St James Palace, Sussex and QEII). It gives Mercer his 144th winner of the year and he went on to ride a '4 timer' with two wins for Jeremy Hindley and a walkover for Cecil. He didn't need them or the 20 others he rode before the end of the season as his nearest competitor (Carson) only got to 142. Mercer registered an amazing 27% wins to rides rate.
