I've seen and criticised peter o'sullevan's commentary of the 84 Arkle. One of the worst I've ever heard of what was an amazing finish. Arazi do you work......

But I now extent my scepticism of when O'Sullevan was a good commentator into the 70s. Missing Golden Cygnet pulled the arms out of Niall madden going down the hill and saying that any of six could win the race jumping the second last was poor. Maybe I'm judging him by todays standards, but renowned racereader that he was, its suprising that he didnt give the performance the commentary it deserved.

It's a shame Blazing Walker missed the following season through injury. He was never the same when he eventually did return to the racetrack.

Singspiel, Pilsudski, Bosra Sham, Peintre Celebre, Helissio & Swain made 1997 a really classy season. Bosra Sham is still the best 1m - 1m 2f filly/mare I've seen. The King George was a brilliant contest but IMO had the rain not fallen strongly before the race Singspiel would have won it. Peintre Celebre is the best winner of the Arc I've seen ahead of Montjeu & Sakhee. The turn of foot he showed to defeat Pilsudski was just breathtaking. Also, Pat Eddery's ride on Celeric in the Ascot Gold Cup was brilliant to watch.

Thanks for those Arazi,great memories.

Yeah he had a great season but,as you say, was never the same again unfortunately,& according to Chris Grant the best horse he ever rode. Loved the way he picked up though & stuck his head down,a real battler & then would prick his ears when the work was done as can be seen in those clips.

Just seen the Secretariat Belmont. Awesome - never ever seen a Grade 1 won in that manner, and I believe he broke the 1m 5f track record too while pulling up!

I was 6 at the time and in a poor era for middle distance horses here, he Dahlia and Allez France were my first equine idols ont he flat!

Unlike Arazi, Secretariat could consistently deliver high class performances and that Belmont has to be unrivalled in the history or racing!

Dancing Brave, Pebbles & Reference Point were all around before I got into racing. Before I saw these clips I new how great Dancing Brave and Pebbles were because their big race victories get shown quite a bit on t.v. Espeically Dancing Brave's Arc and Pebbles winning the Breeders Cup Turf. All I really knew about Reference Point before I saw these clips was that he was a good Derby winner who got beaten by a horse called Mtoto in the Eclipse. After watching this and seeing how impressive he was in the King George I can see he was a much better horse than I thought.

Highly recommend William Nack's "Secretariat: The Making of a Champion", although I suspect you may have read it already!
