There's a difference between writing a horse off, and accepting what is staring you in the face - that Toronado lacks the stamina for a well-run mile at the very top level. It's not as though his previous form doesn't entirely support that view, either.
In a steadily run Craven, he had the race won a furlong down, indicating that speed - rather than stamina - was likely to be his forte, and he was all-out to win the Champagne (again, at no great pace) off a soft lead gifted to him by his early speed. Likewise his Ascot listed win was won off an early crawl, and on his Newbury debut (though more truly run) he beat subsequent handicappers.
His stable is well known as buying horses for speed and precocity, and Toronado is just the latest to join a long list of their 'milers' that didn't quite see the distance out.
He's Foret bound, whether his stable admits it, or not.
