Road To The 2013 QM Champion Chase

Very true Grasshopper, without Sprinter Sacre we'd be hailing Sizing Europe for a demolition job on Wishful Thinking and Sanctuaire.

An absolutely awesome performace from Sprinter Sacre which was a joy to watch.

The Halifax boys have been itching to throw a huge number against Sprinter Sacre since the Tingle Creek.

Is 192P fair reflection of yesterday's performance? Well, if it's too high, it's by a couple of lbs only, and the large 'P' is probably justified too. I'm just glad that HdB and the Potts consented to put their horse in against the Aeroplane - watching the pair over the last 3/4 mile was utterly compelling, whereas it would otherwise have been the dullest race of the week in SE's absence.

I said a few months back I thought SS had a 200+ performance in him. 190++ for yesterday would be a bare minimum but as TW mentioned earlier, what Master Minded did as a 5yo was up there but he didn't do it as easily.

Take SS out of the race and we'd have been raving about what good old Sizing Europe did to good markers like Wishfull Thinking and Sanctuaire, the latter having been touted by his yard at the start of the season as the one to stick it up to SS this season.

Master Minded's best wouldn't be in the same parish, imo. Voy Por Ustedes wouldn't get within an asses roar of Sizing Europe. Sacre's performance yesterday is miles in front of anything MM achieved.

I think people downgrade the performance of Master Minded based on subsequent events.

Voy Por Ustedes may not have been as good as Sizing Europe when both were at their peak, but I think he might have not been far off an 11yo SE. Maybe 5lb.

Let's not forget that VPU won an Arkle, a Champion Chase, 2 Melling Chases and a fair few other graded chases. He was a length off Imperial Commander in the Ryanair.

So beating him 19L, even if you think he was only a 170 OR horse (which would be a pretty parsimonious assessment of his form) is still a knockout ratings performance. the distance back to the 3rd and fourth that day would suggest that VPU was close to his best, too.

I think Sprinter Sacre would tear Master Minded a new one. But I don't think we should pretend that yesterday wasn't the first time that SS has surpassed the best form of Master Minded, and we need to be clear that SS is going to need to face horses like Sizing Europe if we can produce a definitively great performance in excess of his run yesterday.

To be fair, I 'downplayed' the QM performance at the time, rating it 178. As for VPU, he won the worst Arkle in living memory (getting a lump of weight), and one of the worst QM's in living memory too. The proximity to Imperial Commander in the Ryanair was because IC need a half-mile further.

VPU was no better than low-160's at his best and never remotely near 170, in my view. That said, I acknowledge that I seem to be harder to convince than many, when it comes to apparently stellar performances.

Sacre, however, is different gravy, and the form of the QM looks rock-solid to me.

VPU at his very best was a 172 horse (178 on RPRs), very much on a par with the average of SE's best half-dozen performances.

It was breathtaking and the way Sizing Europe also left the rest of the field for dead coming down the hill shows how well he ran . I suspect had he not stumbled he would have been a few lengths further clear of the rest too but Sprinter Sacre would still have been miles clear .

At present Simonsig has an enormous amount to prove before he can be expected to get even within hailing distance.

All I know from today is that an absolugte stalwart, top-end, in-form 2m chaser (albeit an 11yo) was made to look like a selling-plater by Sprinter Sacre.

Without having to come off the steel either.

If there's been a better 2m chaser whose performances aren't restricted to Pathe Newsreel and Utopian assessment, then I'd like to know its name.
Pegasus ? :D

Thought Racebets had had a mention on a thread somewhere, but can't find it and can't remember whether the mention was good or bad, but they are offering an even money bet on Sprinter Sacre (Max £50 stake)

New racebets customers get a £100 free bet on sign up too so is that a free bet on Sprinter Sacre or do you have to make a deposit first ?
