Now that we have a market and information on foal numbers, thanks all, I'll take a closer look at the contenders.
AMERICAIN- Achieved a RPR of 125 when winning the 2010 Melbourne Cup. Made a winning racecourse debut over 7f. in the July of his 2-y-o season. Despite having Arazi as his Dam Sire it's difficult to imagine him getting many early winners.
BATED BREATH- price 7/1 number of foals 103
A high class sprinter who won the Group 2 Temple Stakes over 5f. on firm before being runner-up in the Group 1 King Stand Stakes over 5f. on good to soft. He won his first three runs over 6f. (first one in mid-April) as a 2-y-o. Decent claims.(as pointed out below Bated Breath didn't run as a 2-y-o, those three wins were as a 3-y-o)
BORN TO SEA - 14/1 / 85
Only one racecourse win, that was on debut in a Listed 6f. at the Curragh in September. Probably owes his place at stud to the fact that he is the last son of Urban Sea, who, in case you need reminding, gave birth to Sea The Stars and Galileo. Not an obvious producer of precocious youngsters.
CASAMENTO - 6/1 / 115
Given a RPR of 121 for winning the 2010 Racing Post Trophy but was disappointing in his 3-y-o season, his only win a 10f. Group 3 at Longchamp. He started his 2-y-o career with a win win over 7.5F at Tipperary at the end of August. Surprised that he's so short in the market.
DELEGATOR - 66/1 / 69
Winner of the Group 2 Duke Of York Stakes of 2011 as a 5-y-o. Not seen as a 2-y-o until August when finishing second, won on next appearance a fortnight later. Probably put up his best performance when second to master craftsman in the St. James's Palace Stakes as a 3-y-o. Offspring should have the speed to win races but not sure to be precocious.
DONCASTER ROVER- Stands at the modest fee of 2000 GBP and not an obvious choice for a stallion. Placed in Group 3s and a Listed winner over sprint distances. Would be surprising if he achieved too much at stud.
DRAGON PULSE 20/1 / 75
Went off 5/2 fav. on his debut at the Curragh in early June and finished second. Went one better six weeks later when winning a 6f. maiden at Leopardstown. Finished the year with a 1/2 length second to Power in the national Stakes at the Curragh. Transferred to France for his 3-y-o career but was rather disappointing after an initial success in an 8f. Group 3 at Longchamp. Plenty of speed in his pedigree and he should get his share of winners.
ELZAAM 25/1 / 67
Made a winning 2-y-o debut at the York May Meeting and on his second run was beaten a nose by Strong Suit in the Coventry. Won the Listed 6f. Carnarvon Stakes as a 3-y-o and ran a good fourth in the Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal ascot. Another who should get his share of winners.
EXCELEBRATION 3/1 / 87
Started his racing career with Marco Botti and wasn't tried at the highest level as a 2-y-o, winning two of his three starts and given a RPR of 92. Reappeared in the Greenham and showed much improved form (RPR 113) in finishing fourth to Frankel. Was destined to see a lot of that horse's arse for the rest of his second season but Frankel was the only horse to finish in front of him that season. Bought by Coolmore and sent to O"Brien, aged four he again had to settle for second behind Frankel in the Lockinge and the Queen Anne but won on three occasions when that horse wasn't around. Finished his career in the Breeders'Cup Mile starting favourite but after running well could only manage fourth. A very satisfactory racing career and if Frankel hadn't been foaled in the same year he would have won an impressive amount of prize-money. He could be a very interesting stallion.
FAME AND GLORY
Was a latecomer to the racecourse, wasn't seen until late October when winning at Navan over a mile, went to Saint Cloud for his second outing and won over 10f. on heavy. As a 3-y-o he ran second to Sea The Stars in the Derby. Achieved his best RPR(130) when second to Sea The Stars in the 2009 Irish Champion. Was kept racing until pulling-up in the 2012 B.C. Marathon as a 6-y-o . A classy animal but unlikely to produce a great number of speedy 2-y-os.
FAMOUS NAME 100/1 / 48
Won on his 2-y-o debut and went on to win 21 races, 13 in Group company and 7 in Listed. Excelled over 8 -10f. Going by the number of foals he hasn't proved to be popular at stud. That surprises me.
FOXWEDGE 25/1 / 82
Australian sprinter who was given a RPR of 125 for winning a Group 1 over 6f. at Moonee Valley. Bit of an unknown quantity but given the high standard of Australian sprinters he has to be considered.
FRANKEL 2/1 / 98
I think everyone will be aware of his race record but great racehorses don't always make great stallions. There's probably a thesis waiting to be written by Warbler as to why this is the case.
HARBOUR WATCH 5/1 / 122
He's been a very busy lad. Just made the three appearances on the racecourse winning all three including the Group 2 Richmond at Goodwood. Reportedly sustained an injury and retired to stud. Not a lot of evidence to work with but should get plenty of winners.
HELMET 25/1 / 79
Spent his early years in Australia, placed on debut as a 2-y-o then won all four of his other juvenile races including two Group 1s. Won a Group 1 over a mile as a 3-y-o then finished his career with Godolphin/ Al Zarooni when well beaten behind Frankel in the Queen Anne. An unknown quantity as far as I am concerned.
MAYSON 25/1 / 70
Plenty of speed in this one's pedigree. Made a modest start to his racing career, winning two of his six 2-y-o races, running fourth to Zebedee in the Group 3 Molecomb at Goodwood. Another modest season as a 3-y-o with just a couple of placed efforts in Listed company. Showed much more ability as a 4-y-o winning 3 of his 7 starts, the highlight a group 1 success in the July Cup @ 20/1 and by five lengths and a RPR of 121. So a late developer but will his offspring be the same?
NATHANIEL 14/1 / 113
Just the two races as a 2-y-o both over a mile and two second places. Got off the mark at the first attempt as a 3-y-o, a 12f. race at Haydock in April. Improved rapidly then to take the Group 2 King Edward VII at Ascot, the Group 1 King George VI and QE, again at Ascot and the Eclipse at Sandown. His pedigree is full of stamina and although he is likely to produce quality will they have enough speed and precocity to make him a successful 2-y-o sire.
POWER 16/1 / 82
A successful 2-y-o who won on debut at the Curragh then going on to win three from five of the rest, winning the Group 1 National and runner-up the Phoenix and Dewhurst. Only had the three outings as a 3-y-o, winning the Irish 2,000 Guineas but disappointing in the Newmarket Guineas and the St. James's Palace Stakes. Looks to have the breeding and race record to make a very successful sire of juveniles.
REQUINTO 40/1 / 49
Only raced as a 2-y-o wining four of his eight races. Won the Group 2 Flying Childers by a short-head in a three-way photo. Has an 8-10f. pedigree but was never tried beyond six. Not a lot of evidence to go on but he showed plenty of speed himself.
RIO DE LA PLATA
Godolphin horse who won the Group 2 7f. Vintage Stakes at Goodwood and the Group 1 7f. Grand Criterium at Longchamp as a 2-y-o. Carried on racing until 2012 when he was a 7-y-o. Probably put up his best performance as a 6-y-o when finishing second to Excelebration in the 8f. Group 1 Prix de moulin at Longchamp. Difficult one to predict as a sire, showed good form as a 2-y-o but never really progressed.
SAYIF 100/1
Didn't win as a 2-y-o but was runner-up to to Bushranger in the Group 1 middle Park over 6f. at Newmarket. Probably best performance was winning the Group 2 Diadem over 6f. at Ascot. His offspring should have some speed but maybe not at the highest level.
SEPOY 20/1 / 82
Very useful Australian sprinter who won his only start as a 2-y-o and in 10 races as a 3-y-o was only beaten once when second in a Group 2. No further successes and finished with two disappointing efforts at Meydan and Newmarket. Another that is a bit of an unknown.
SIR PRANCELOT 14/1 / 102
Made a winning 2-y-o debut at Bath in May and put up his best performance on his last appearance when winning the Group 2 Flying childers at Doncaster. Progeny likely to be fast and precocious but there is some stamina in the sire's family. Should do OK.
SO YOU THINK 100/1 / 52
Top class middle-distance horse for Aiden O'Brien. Started his career in Australia and won as a 2-y-o. Showed his best form as a 4-y-o when winning four Group 1s and finishing third in the Melbourne Cup. Bought by Ballydoyle/Coolmore and was successful in the 2011 Eclipse and being allowed a RPR of 129. Ended his career by winning the the Prince of Wales's Stakes as a 5-y-o in 2012. A very classy sire who should produce plenty of classy winners.
YORGUNNABELUCKY
Didn't win as a 2-y-o but did finish second on debut at Redcar when a short-priced favourite.Probably best performance on the flat was winning a 14f. handicap at Newmarket in 2011. Had three runs over hurdles for Alan King without success. Seems an unlikely candidate for stud duties and has very little chance of being a top first season sire.
BODEMEISTER
Didn't run as a 2-y-o and only had five runs in his whole racing career. Never finished out of the first two, winning the 9f. Grade 1 Arkansas Derby and finishing second in the Kentucky Derby of 2012 and second in the Preakness. Obviously a classy animal and it will be interesting to see how his runners (if he has runners here) perform.
SHACKLEFORD
Won over 7f. as a 2-y-o. Ran fourth to Animal Kingdom in the Kentucky Derby before getting revenge by beating that horse in the Preakness.Didn't appear to get the trip when rather distant fifth in the 12f. Belmont. Finished second in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, ran 17 times in all and earning almost two million. Should produce tough classy youngsters.
UNION RAGS
Won over 5 - 8.5f. as a 2-y-o, three wins in all. Won the Grade 2 8.5f. Fountain Of Youth Stakes and the 12f. Belmont as a 3-y-o. Class, speed and stamina - all the right ingredients.
I'll probably regret having done this by the end of the season but I can take the ridicule
