The 2014 Punchestown Festival

Jetson didn't steal that, Quevega and AFC weren't that far back, just didn't quicken up quickly enough. I wouldn't blame the jockeys at all. Punchestown can be a funny festival as many horses will be over the top so funny results can happen.

I agree with your general point but I don't think being "over the top" can be put forward as an excuse for Quevega - it was only her second start of the season.

Had to look at it in the bookies. The level of ignorance in mug punters on shop floors is astounding.

The mare is being retired is she?

What makes you say that Granger? RE your mug punter remark.

Although I do agree you do come across some right donkeys in the shops from time to time.

I call in one for 20 mins most days while at work and the banter can enjoyable.

Mistaking jockeys/ horses. Blaming the jockey automatically. Backing favs blindly. Betting on virtual racing. Being 8 stone overweight and showing people what you would have done.

All valid points
I asked a fella next to me in the shop once,The day before The Derby what he thought was going to win tomorrows big race.
The fact he asked what it was told me everything I needed to know!

There used to be this scruffy old guy sitting in the corner of my local bookies, and other punters regularly poked fun at him.
Thing is, when you got to talk to him properly, he knew more about horseracing than all his detractors added together, and often walked home with a pocketful of their money.
He's gone now, God bless him, but not all betting shop habitues are necessarily clueless.

Enjoyed that today. Didn't want Champagne Fever to be too impressive as I want him to step up in trip. This horse is pure Cheltenham. None of his form in Ireland is a patch on his efforts there. He didn't jump that well today, went a bit too quick and just needs a trip.

Fingal Bay was disappointing but he's a pure stayer and hopefully will be sent back over fences next season.

yeah CF is just a cheltenham specialist. no real performances of note away from there.

you'd have to offer me very plump odds to back him in any race that isn't at prestbury park.

Champagne Fever simply needs further, and his Cheltenham record is entirely due to the strong pace every time he's raced there. Given a stern enough test, he'll jump like a bunny around anywhere, and on any ground, imo.
Yesterday's race looked no more than educational, and with 6 horses virtually abreast approaching the last, and a time only fractionally faster than the preceding handicap, small wonder he got outsped by lesser animals in the closing stages.

No great mention of Harbourgeddon this time but I expect the Fly to do the business today.

Guessing he will have to win/go very close or there is a fair probability that he may be retired also.

Every time he has raced at Cheltenham he has been the one who has set the pace. So the strong pace you refer to is all his own doing, no ?

I think it's more that he simply just loves and suits the Cheltenham course.

McCoy has never given Jezki a good ride.....

I have to be with The Fly today!

Can if WM overdid it before Cheltenham. She older and the question we can't answer: is she more set in her ways, lazier, wants to do things in her own time?

Wery easy for a trainer to get it wrong when a situation like that arises.

Noit saying for one moment you are wrong but it is possiible e.g. she went to Cheltenham 102% instead of the normal 98% and the run put her over the top.

More likely she's just not as good as she was..........

HOW ABOUT THIS HEADLINE

Brilliant Quevega is retired

Seems like the owners don't have a say and the Sporting LIfe have decided for them.

WM: I'll speak to the owners but I'd imagine this was her last race.

I have this feeling that Champagne Fever spits the dummy out when he's taken on at the head of affairs.
The Arkle foirm isn't exactly working out either.
Thought the tactics employed by Hutchinson on Balder Success in his bid to badger Champagne Fever for the lead probably cost him the race.

Agreed about Balder and Arkle form. Not so sure CF doesn't like being taken on though just think he's a bit better suited by further

That's about the weirdest excuse for not backing a horse I've come across yet.
He certainly did nothing wrong on the horse in the Ryanair when attempting to get first run on the Fly.

That never worked so they tried holding him up next time but that never worked either.

In both races McCoy had him exactly in the right place but the horse on both occasions when Hurricane Fly and Our Conor quickened he couldn't find.

The only reason he passed Our Conor up the run in in the Ryanair is because he blew up.

If they use either of those tactics today I can't see things being any different as Hurricane Fly has definetly got the better turn off foot.

Their only chance is to trun it into a test of stamina and the only way they can do that is make it a stamina rather than a speed test. That would mean setting a hell for leather gallop from the word go and hope they don't burn themsleves up instead of Hurricane Fly.

Looks like a no brainer that Hurricane Fly will win this.

McCoy is a negative for this horse today Tanlic. A 2min review of the form shows that. BUT even with BG on board i still couldn't have him, this is time for the Fly to retire with one final G1.

he confirmed last night he's spoke to them and she's retired

have to doff my hat to mullins. quevega retires a legend having not really beaten anything of note in the last 5 years. superb race placement.

11/10 Hurricane Fly-guaranteed price, double result-great bet in my opinion. It will be a very quiet weekend if he doesn't do the business.

McCoy is not my only reason for opposing Jezki today.......

But I'm convinced he is a negative.

And like you I think everything about today's conditions will suit the Fly.
