The 2025 Oaks

Cooper today: "We'll make decisions based on what we think might happen, but it's getting to the stage whereby if the forecast was dry and settled I think we'd step in tomorrow to water to some degree. But that's not what we're forecast."

He's just DYING to turn those taps on! 😂
Shouldn’t the Environment Agency be issuing an Amber Flood Alert for Epsom Racecourse soon? It’s a public area and people need to be warned!😁

I was a big fan of the Damon Runyon books in my late teenage years and thought Benny The Dip was not only a brilliant name but that he was also brilliantly named, by Silver Hawk out of Royal Rascal.

Minnie Hauk (named after the American 19th century operatic soprano I'll have you know) is the only one of Aidan O'brien's trio attracting any support at present.
If she wins I for one will be singing her name on Friday!!!!!

Needless to say (having mentioned her earlier) I'm on as well.

But I was unaware of the history of her name - many thanks for enlightening me!

"Giselle, Minnie Hauk and Whirl have all come out of their races well," O'Brien said. "I would imagine Ryan will ride Minnie Hauk. She’s a lovely, straightforward filly and we think she’s come forward loads for Chester, when she was just ready to start."

Whirl seems the obvious one to me. Gradually improving and won the musidora with ease. Very similar to snowfalls win but being ignored. Strange how we all see it differently.

Thought lordon would be on whirl. Both races so tricky to work out. If desert flower stays then she will probably win but depends who comes forward from first run. A few suspect temperant wise. Id be delighted if one of the lesser lights won. Can see an upset happening in one or both the derby and oaks.Must have been a tricky choice for Ryan.

I looked at the race this afternoon.

My immediate worries regarding the Musidora form is that it seems to have been an exceptionally fast run race and the two coming here from there are candidates for the bounce. Michael Tabor's post-race comments suggest he doesn't think Whirl will stay.

Her dosage profile suggest very much otherwise:

DP = 1-4-12-7-0 (24) DI = 0.85 CD = -0.04

Simon Rowlands reckons her striding pattern supports the idea: "...her striding (2.36 max/2.21 min here) suggests she just about will also."

So was Tabor trying to put punters away so that he could get a price?

Well, good luck to Desert Flower, she can win without my money on her.

I wasn't convinced a front-running 1,000 Guineas winner, by a 2,000 Guineas winner, with limited stamina on the dam's side too, was a moral certainty to get 1m4f in the first place.

And now I've convinced myself Epsom Downs is going to be hit by Biblical rainfall, I can't have her at all.

I'm with Minnie Hauk - the 19th century Taylor Swift 😂 - all the way!

Watch Delacroix and Lambourn shorten if Wemightakedlongway wins this - which isn't impossible if the jolly doesn't get the trip.

I find it difficult to see past Desert Flower despite concerns about her stamina (with half the damn field in the same boat - what’s happening on the bloodstock front, can’t be healthy for the future). Two others that interest are Revoir who went into my notebook after her 2nd in a Listed at Newbury (to the much more experienced Qilin Queen) on only her second run, but this is a giant step up and likely one too far. The other is Elwateen who was tossed into the Guineas after just one run in a Class5 and performed very well. I think she’s worth at least the supplement.
