The Craven Meeting

I wonder whether the powers that be in selling all of racing to Channel 4 insisted that the channel supported racing properly by covering meetings important to it ? The first day of the Leger meeting , the lost third day of the Guineas meeting , the opening flat meeting but most importantly the Craven .

It is still a fascinating meeting but it is sad how it has been allowed to decline especially the Free Hcap which in 1982 was worth more than it is now and would be worth £70,000 to the winner. When Newmarket can throw £65.000 at the 3 year old 6f hcap at the July Meeting why not support this race properly ? I remember big fields and horses being laid out for the race , Moorestyle spreadeagling the field in 1980 after being heavily backed in particular ( as my pocket money was down ! )

I think as the autumn programme for the top horses has expanded the spring racing has declined. There is less need to get horses out so early, even horses going to the Guineas are avoiding the trials.
