Not strictly, no. Although the assignment question did begin with a quote from a judge, the task set out was simply to find out if I know what the basis of blah dee blah dee blah is.

Incidentally, the case law in question was regarding the Home Secretary's attempt to increase a double murderer's sentence from 15 years to 20 years. The convicted man had murdered both his parents by shooting them in their bed and was given 15 years for it. 10 years later the Home Secretary decided it should be 20 years.

The Home Secretary was, rightly, put in his place and denied the increase.

It was 1997, so Jack Straw?

Michael Howard got in on the act back in 1993 when he attempted to increase the sentence of another prisoner.

Douglas Hurd in 1987 tried also.

Yes, Jack Straw. For five points, anyone, what does Jack Straw have in common with the present Home Secretary?

(Please no obvious answers such as they are both in the Cabinet, both members of the Labour Party etc)

Were they both President of the National Union of Students? (Well, I know they were, I'm asking if that's the right answer you are looking for)

708 words? They don't set you a higher goal than that? You've posted twice that much about ROOSTER B at one sitting! Tsk... standards! Standards!

The maximum was 1500 words, but I can be short and sweet when I want to be.

To be honest, I do think a lot of legal essays (from what I have read) are repetitive with the main points.

I have convered all the relevant points, explaining everything I needed to and demonstrating my research skills and my argumentative skills as well as putting up counter arguments (even if I don't agree with them personally).

Hellooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, got my first TMA back and I didn't do too well.

All is not lost yet though.

My second TMA is due in by the 20th and not having a PC at home at the moment is a major handicap. The second TMA concentrates on the Royal Prerogative and I have done a lot of research on the subject so I am confident of doing much better on this essay.

I'll pop on when I get the result and let you know how I got on. I am still confident of becoming Perry Mason.

Thank you Paul.

I'm not back as such though, but hovering about from week to week for the moment.

Hi

I started an OU degree in English/History a while back but only finished year one before I changed jobs and had to undertake a professional qualification for work, which left me no time for my degree (I'm now in Trading Standards, so maybe another legal eagle?!)

I found it a good way to study, but you did have to be able to motivate yourself, which means that it is essential to have a genuine interest in the subject you are studying, or a compelling reason to do so.

Good luck with it, anyway!

Let me send you a sincere word of support, Phil: I think there's an excellent chance you could be the next Perry Mason.

But first, you'll need to join a studio to refine those acting skills you've displayed on here so often!

I just received my second assessment score and I did three times as good this time (score-wise).

That's the essay type assessments over with and I am now moving on to problem solving type assessments and I believe I will be better at these.

And more excitingly, it's only about 5 weeks before I move on to criminal law, murders and rapes.

I can't wait :D

Got my third assessment mark back and I didn't do too well on this one either.

I had to determine if judicial review or right of appeal was the correct advice to offer the hypothetical character in my assessment outline.

I did distinguish between the two quite well my tutor explained but just not in great depth (or at least the level of depth he seemed to want)

I have now said goodbye to public law for now and moved on to criminal law.

My next assessment is to do with the subject of recklessness and I'm finding this part of law very fascinating. I'm definitely dreading my exam in October, I cannot remember things.
