The Road To The 2013 Grand National

That I should change my tone to ingratiate myself to you, and your condescension...."Went = Fell" in this rarefied forum and in racing circles.

Taking a derisory tone, which is what you did in response to my pointing out that three horses didn't fall at the last, only detracts from any meaningful debate.

I'm trying to help you. You're not helping yourself or the debate.

Its sweet of you to give your advise and help without asking. Its nice that you think that I need help.

The Grand National has always been a race for the general public more than the racing purist, so it would be pointless to ignore mainstream opinion for the sake of tradition.

Ironically enough, though, the pressure could now be on to reduce the field size. With fewer fallers and a more sensible pace there were a lot of horses short of room on the first circuit, especially at the Canal Turn.

Think the media's appetite for controversy has a lot to do with it. Willing recipients to the lobby for change. Peter O'Toole couldn't divert attention in 2011. It is a lobby that has won the battle for mainstream opinion.

There was CARNAGE in the handicap chase today at Ascot. Thankfully no one died (according to ATR) it did look ominous for Knighton Combe when he fell. Ryan Mania had to be airlifted off in an ambulance. That this is not remotely of interest to mainstream opinion, one day after the whole sport caters for it, feels off.

Anyway, wont have to worry about it for 360 odd days.

From the Racing Post site:

Jockey Barry Geraghty (‏@BarryJGeraghty): "Well done to all at Aintree for a brilliant 3 days racing & especially for all the effort to make the National fences as safe as possible." (51 mins ago)

You're a ******* jinx.

Im not often called a jinx. Minx, yes - jinx, no....

Today was a new day and a sad reminder of the ups and downs of the life of a jockey. Nowt to do with me. Unless theres injuries from the National that have come to light today that I havent heard about?

Peter O'Toole ?? Now if the veteran actor had been ridingat Aintree that would have attracted a lot of press coverage.

Disappointed. Wishing cancer on me would have been more your style Simmo. You dont have to be a prick everyday.

Poor comeback given that I've never wished cancer on anyone, on this forum or otherwise.

Would you like to take time out from reading your copy of "How to be a prick every day - without trying!" to take another shot at that?

Not sure what the result of the race has to do with it falling apart, Bar.

Nearly every forum attracts a minority of airheads hell-bent on stirring things up.

Hang on a second lads. I certainly didnt start on anyone in here. I put up an opinion, only dismissed those which didnt stand up to scrutiny (myself and EC1 were well able to come to a decent conclusion when discussing the matter) and have to take pot shots from the forum elders.

I'll accept being guilty of unappreciating Desert Orchid's condenscending tone but as for rattling teeth, correcting mispellings, Peter O'Toole.

And then be told that I'm the one stirring things up. Sheltered lot.

I don't see what the issue is here.

Race went well, was well marketed, nobody got injured and yeah a 66/1 poke won it but he won it fair and square. It seems to be the last point that is causing people to suggest the race isn't what it once was...

Not for me Aragon. I had posted up the other thread on this after the topham.

66/1 shots would be more akin to the old style lottery affair. It would be a easier arguement to make that it was just a long distance staying chase if the favourites were winning. I dont think getting round in the grand national is any longer a mark of achievement. Its safer undoubtedly, and maybe on the first circuit for the leaders its the same test, its less likely to have anyone injured in it, but its a PR exercise now. Thought Greg Wood's piece in the guardian was well made.

What made the Grand National great has been eroded for PR. Modern times.
