The Road To The 2021 Cheltenham Gold Cup

I loved it. That will have sharpened up his jumping. Sceau Royal is a good horse and he hanged with him until the death.
It was a brilliant run, far better than I expected. If they are going to be riding him quietly and settling him, I'm not sure if his jumping will benefit from that run.

I think he isn't the cleverest jumper, so you are better off asking him/making his mind up, rather than trying to get him to shorten into his fences and settle him more generally

I think he's the most likely winner. The negative I see talked about is his jumping but he's safe generally and the odd error doesn't seem to affect his end of race performance. Also, if you look through the GC roll of honour it is littered with iffy jumpers. ABP himself misses fences out, Don Cossack came down in his RSA and failed to win the Ryanair after a shuddering error. Synchronised, Kauto Star even.

Al Boum Photo this year very much reminds me of Enable when she was going for her third Arc.

First win - for both was very clear cut.

Second win - luck played a part. Questionable rides/decisions by the runner up in both races. Nico, if he doesn't switch Santini to Lostintranslation's outside after the last and instead stays between that horse and ABP he surely wins. That decision had to have cost him half a length.

I think the third time is too much. Enable was vulnerable to a horse that actually stayed 12f well and ABP i dunno, Best Mate was much worse in his 3rd win and lucked out with the field. No matter how light a campaign a chaser has this race takes it out of them. I think ABP is a potential place lay.

Yet still, people believe they know better than his trainer?:)
Champ has proved tractable in his other races, and jumping at speed was just part of his training. Fairly sure he'll be right on the day.

I wouldn't be surprised if they decide to let Champ just roll along.

If he's as classy as his reputation (hasn't Nico already decided he'll ride him in preference to Santini?) why not just let him roll? They did it with Might Bite in the RSA.

Sorry have I missed something here, why is Mark Walsh not riding him?

Very hard to look past Al Boum Photo for most but to think a horse who we seldom see could emulate greats like Kauto 5 kg's Golden Miller 5 GC and Arkle 3GC's by winning a 3rd Gold Cup shows how poor the devision really is....to me despite ABP'sclaim to fame anyone of 10 could win this years race

UK runners not Aidan Coleman?

Not necessarily. Nico was/is on champ whereas Coleman is on Santini.

If Coleman was JPs man it would be the other way around.

Jonjo rides the ones trained by his dad. Nico rides most of the Henderson trained ones.

The only person Coleman is "retained" by is Olly Murphy

The thing about this for me is that, look at how the public get behind horses Enable, Frankel, Kauto, Arkle, Red Rum, Altior etc... My mum knows who they are and she doesn’t care for racing!

ABP has like you say, just done well to find a division that is poor for the past few years. However, has it got any better this year? Hopefully....

But Coleman is on Epatante?

Didn't the riding arrangements for Epatante and Buveur D'Air have something to do with earlier availability? Didn't Nico opt to go somewhere earlier in the year for a ride and the decision was made then to let Coleman keep the ride on Epatante permanently? I don't know for sure. There's just something along those lines in the murk of an ageing memory.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was based on promise being shown by BDA in his comeback work.

I think he's quite versatile, he's made the running over fences and hurdles and also been held up.
Others in the line up tend to sulk if they don't make it etc.

He clearly stays well. He was good at the weekend. They must be tempted to have him sat handy after that.

I think unlikely but any chance Rachel does the switcheroo and doesn't ride Minella

Between her and bryony, ITV will build this race to be the biggest event since the Berlin Wall came down

I don't think anyof them have improved Santini is a pro loser, Champ is an accident wating to happen with someof the craziest leaps you'll ever see not a natural jumper at all LIT has lost his way NativeRiver's best days have flowed past him. could almost be an instant replay with A Plus Tard being only possibilty
