Tingle Creek

Didn't really get a look at Shishkin in the padock/before he went out as I was still screaming in frustation at the big screen when Emma fell off ( she asked for an extra stride waaaayyyy too late, he tried so hard bless him but................................. ) but he had a very ropey jump at one of the railway fences, folloed by two mega leaps, but didn't look happy at the pond fence approaching it, almost looked as if was thinking about running out, and the mistake put him back but he wan't travelling as they came off the last of the railway fences. To his credit he did seem to rally up the hill.

Jonbon looked stunning, first time I have seen him. Has a bit of a 'mad eye' but really beautiful.

Usually they go dull in their coats if they’re not feeling 100% or they are cold (hate it when they leave rugs off in the paddock - surely you need to keep muscles warm?). He’s clipped as you would expect but he doesn’t gleam with good health. In comparison Jonbon absolutely shone in his coat. You don’t need to brush them necessarily to get them to look good. It’s all down to the horse being in good condition, fit and on good feed.

These things I understand but when I look at them they all look the same: magnificent, healthy, fit.

The only time I ever recall seeing one horse truly 'stand out' was they day I was at Ascot for Nashwan's King George. The juvenile fillies' race that day (the Princess Margaret?) featured the Royal Ascot winner Pharoah's Delight (?) and I recall seeing her in the paddock and thinking I was looking at a different species. She hacked up but was a short price fav. (Didn't stop me backing her.) I don't think she trained on as a 3yo but the sight of her in the paddock had me wondering about my sexual leanings...

I think they will be disappointed with Shishkin and the trip step up is a last resort

Possibly, early to say but Ascot does seem to have left a mark

I can only see a race fit Allaho really ending him as a horse

The winner was mighty impressive, Kempton and Cheltenham for him

As NH mooted 2m is probably not far enough. Imo, it appears as though he benefitted from the poorly timed (for whatever reason) ride on Energumene in the Clarence House.

I'd be prepared to forgive Shishkin that run on Saturday. First up after a bone illness, after a long break, against race fit horses in a Grade 1. In addition to that, as noted, he clearly didn't look to be at his best, and he also hit the Pond fence hard.

Any one of the five reasons above could have been enough to get him beaten, let alone all five. They may well step him up in trip after that, but I'd be tempted to go to Kempton for the Desert Orchid first to find out just how much he improves for the run.

Yes I agree , I would forgive him that. Long lay off and upset at the start.Sometimes they don't come back but will have to give him another chance at least. Would love to know what the bone issue is and what they have done about it? Mine has a bone issue and we can't do anything for it and he's not going to make it to a racecourse :(

Dunno, reckon he hit the pond fence as he couldn't jump at the speed of the principals, and was outpaced from that point.
I'd trust Nicky's diagnosis that he needs significantly further. He won the Clarence House by outstaying a poorly ridden Energumene, (imo) rather than any burst of speed.
Still a top class horse, and would expect him to prove it in something like the RyanAir.

I hope he does, reet, but from a betting point of view I’ll be looking for something else with just a cover on him for the hope.

Shishkin diagnosed with a back issue, following the Tingle Creek. Henderson says it should be straightforward to correct it. Plan still appwars to be upping him ‘significantly’ in trip.

Very professional and efficient.

I am so not jazzed with the UK 2m chase form - including that from the Tingle Creek. Still reckon Energumene is a steering-job for the QMCC.

It's hard to find anything to oppose Energumene with. Shishkin with everything to prove and seemingly going up in trip, and the rest are also rans by comparison to Energumene.

I just hope he stays fit. Which has seemingly been hard at times in his career.

He's a two mile chaser and he's been involved in one exciting race his whole career to date - and that he lost.

Actually thought you meant Energumene

On a general note

Why do people think that Edwardstone has not taken nore headlines in his career to date?

The mate I watch racing with is called Edward and we've won a fair few quid on him over the past year or two as a result.

I think he could be a real threat to energumene come march.

He got plenty of print as a novice back-end of last season, but isn’t from a power-yard, and doesn’t have the sexy sort of profile that Jonbon does. Things are changing now he’s had the one race out of novice company, but he was always expected to run into two ultra-high-class horses this season, who were (rightly, imo) were hogging all the headlines.

He’s only got the one to beat now, of course…..and I don’t think he will. In fact, I don’t even think it will be close. The Tingle Creek form is all a bit meh, for me.

Shishkin is entered for the Ryanair and the Gold Cup but not the Champion Chase.

Suspect they will run him in the Denman Chase to see how he stays. It's a weakish looking Gold Cup right now, and Sholokov has a few good stayers in his book - though it's obviously a massive jump in terms of stamina.

Personally, I would go Ascot Chase/Ryanair (and maybe train him for the Gold Cup next year), but I think Henderson isn't keen to run him right-handed again, and that probably forces him towards Newbury.

That's such a Henderson move.

Put him up markedly in trip......by a half-mile over the least stamina-sapping Grade 1 course in the UK, going the same way around as you said you wanted to avoid.

Edit: That said, it pretty-much rules-out a pop at the Gold Cup, I reckon.
